He's made a couple of posts in the PoliForum, but I haven't seen him in any others lately. Must be fatherhood.

BTW, your avatar reminded me...do you have Netflix, Lothar? They have ALL the Treks seasons streaming now. TOS, TNG, DS9, ENT, and unfortunately, VOYAGER as well. I did a DS9 run-through again and The Dominion War is still awesome!

BTW, give Enterprise a shot. It really picks up in it's latter two years...

hey buddy, thanks for your concern. sorry I haven't been able to post more; you guessed it, parenting's a time-consuming endeavor. things are going really well at work except I wish I were home with jackie and joann more. things are going reasonably well at home; we are applying for an apartment not too much farther from work and we're hoping to get it sometime soon but we'll see. and the baby? teething. fucking. sucks. part of me feels bad for being such a sound sleeper - especially when jackie looks daggers at me the few times I do wake up - but hopefully this phase won't last too much longer.

so in summation, life is good. thanks again for asking. I may elaborate more in the near future, but... well, let's not forget with whom you're dealing here.

I watched TNG when it first came out. Now I'm watching it again with my kids with discs from Netflix. We did the same thing with Doctor Who.

Frank, I'm telling you man, spend the $200 for a PS3. You won't regret it. Because with that PS3, you can watch all the streaming Netflix you want and don't have to wait on the discs....

Right on! I have a friend who just had his first child last year. So, your complaints are familiar. And I have no advice on this subject, other than GOOD LUCK!

Funny thing there Pro,I gotta say I enjoyed Enterprise more than I thought I would.I think the reason it didn't fare so well is all the continuity glitches it posed and Trekkie fans' heads kept asploding, but I just detached myself from what I knew and sat back and enjoyed it as it was. I also enjoyed the Vulcans being portrayed as complete asshats and Captain Archer sticking it to 'em every chance he got.

Once I got out of Enterprise, I could never get back into it.

Voyager really damaged my love of Trek.

Dude, ENTERPRISE was a great show! Like TNG and DS9, it didn't find it's footing until the third year. But, at that point, Paramount was losing hand-over-fist on their failed "UPN" channel where they insisted on putting all new Trek shows. THAT'S what killed ENTERPRISE. It wasn't the fanboy reactions. It was the ratings because the show was stuck on a cable channel that few cities actually had available in their chartered cable company. I truly believe, due to the realism they infected ENTERPRISE with....the hardships and challenges the first interstellar human ship would have to deal with...and the lack of cynicism that shows like BSG used to the point of cliche', ENTERPRISE would have been a bigger hit if it has been shown on normal broadcast channels, or in syndication like TNG & DS9.

As a Trekkie myself, the only thing I ever cringed at was when they ran across the Romulans. Since TOS makes such a big deal about no one (not even the Vulcans, apparently) having seen them since The Romulan War until Kirk's era. But, since that little bit never made a lot of sense (how do you have a war with a race you've never laid eyes on?) I was totally okay with dancing around that little bit. Also, them encountering that Borg probe in the arctic was just Rick Berman playing to what he thought was unconditional Borg-love by fans. Personally, it stuck out as "Hey look, it's the Borg!" rather than a good story.

Overall, the only thing Enterprise actually contradicted wasn't so much canon as it was "fanon". There had been 40 years for fans and merchandising to "fill in the gaps" of Federation history, that these so-called "fans" threw a fit they couldn't have their own personal fantasies validated by the geek community. There was an official story in place now. And not one they "control" with their opinions, and one that veered from what they had been taught to expect from writers 40-years in the past...

"What? The Vulcans aren't the perfect race TOS tried to paint them as? What? Spock wasn't the first Vulcan stationed on a human ship, but was JUST the first Vulcan in Starfleet? What? How DARE they explain where terms like 'RED ALERT' and 'M-Class Planet' come from and mean! Hoshi is the inventor of the Universal Translator?! NOOO! This whole show is filling in all the gaps and adding TOO MUCH REALITY AND COMMON SENSE to what I expect to be my personal preference of magical perfection! NERDRAGE!!"

Fuck those geeks. I hope Star Trek leaves them behind with the Abramsverse. I, too, love my original Trek stuff. But, I'm smart enough and not so obsessive I believe it has to remain stagnant and die just so that my personal Geek Cred can be satiated and validated by being the "expert fan". Those type of "fans" aren't fans at all, but they are THE problem when it comes to how the outside world perceives science fiction in general, and Star Trek in particular.

P.S. VOYAGER was how I picture Hell. I wanted to rip my eyes out after the pilot. Just saying.

Maybe my problem was that I stuck with Voyager for too long hoping they would pull it out.

I think if Voyager's year of hell plotline had lasting effects instead of having a time weapon explode them back to the status quo, and boredom it would have been a good save.

Has any of the Voyager cast had a solid acting job since?
Posted By: Prometheus Re: Phil Smith - 2012-04-22 9:27 PM
Other than Robert Picardo, the holoDoc, not that I know. Picardo's been in a lot of different shows, and became a full-time cast member of STARGATE ATLANTIS in its final two years. I think the Janeway chick does stage acting. Kes became super-fat (seriously Google her). Chakotay is publicly vocal about his hate of VOY and his time on Trek. Paris is a director. The rest, no idea.

I gave Voyager a season. And then I checked back in around season 3, since all Treks usually gear-up by S3. Like you said, even after the Year-of-Hell storyline which I'd been told to try, it was pointless when they reset everything. After that, I simply gave up. Never tried to watch it again, until recently. I used Wikipedia to see which episodes TNG characters appeared in VOY, and was going to view just those episodes. I couldn't even get through the first one with Riker. Holy CRAP the casting and writing on that show is total balls Not a single redeeming quality other than HoloDoc...

Hmmm....good point about the UPN thing.I didn't pay much attention to that at the time that the show was out.Still, once I was able to watch the show w/o annoying commercials and such,I really enjoyed it.The only episode I disliked was the last one for two reasons:
One-Having Riker and Troi in the episode and giving the episode "Flashback" status through the holodeck.
Two-I felt gypped at not hearing Archer give his speech at the end. They could've ran the opening montage after and it still would've been cool.

Other than that, the series was everything I liked about Star Trek.

P.S. I liked the premise of Voyager, but the execution didn't play out very well. The Doctor was the only thing I liked in that show.

No one likes the finale. It made little sense, felt rushed, and was all over the place. Since it was seen as a holodeck program, though, you can easily dismiss it as having "errors" in the history...
