So, since I don't really buy many new comics except for a couple I've been trying to buy things that remind me why I love comics. Mostly so I don't have to waste 4 bucks or more trying to find something worthwhile to latch onto out of desperation.

So, I had 3 books from the TwoMorrows Modern Masters series. Alan Davis, Arthur Adams, and Michael Golden. So I was checking Amazon and they have these pretty dirt cheap. I have been buying them at a decent clip (as well as art books by people like Frank Cho). What is great about these books are the stories and history inside each one--the little back stories about the publishers, Alan Moore, Mark Farmer, Claremont, etc. You really get a feel about comic publishing history from inside sources. There is also the art.

The books span an artists career showing early art work to the pinnacle work of their career. Great sketches, finished black and white and occasionally color work. You really see an artists growth and, frankly, there is a lot of humor and wit embedded in the text/interviews. Some of the interviews are with the artist, and also collaborators and peer types.

A highly recommended series for lovers of the art of comics.

I especially enjoyed the Alan Davis, Frank Cho, Chris Sprouse, Art Adams, and Kevin Maguire volumes.

Oh, and if anyone has a copy of the Darwyn Cooke one I'd love to buy or trade it off of you!

I've been picking up a lot of these as well. Piggie sent me the Mike Allred ed. last year. also looking for the Art Adams and Darwyn Cooke eds.

I find myself referencing the Bruce Timm issue quite a bit, as I've been moving more and more towards a "cartoony" style of art.

really can't say I cared much for the Maguire issue, though. always loved his art, but he just really came off as a miserable bastard for the whole thing.

That's why I liked it...so opposite to what I thought he'd be or appear to be. He's like anti-bwahhahah.....maybe not that extreme, but he seems to regret his career choice without saying it.

Got the Art Adams edition. I think his art has deteriorated since the glory days on Xmen annuals, but I really enjoy it.

I'll disagree with that Dave...it's different, but with superior anatomy and inking. The huge breasts are sometimes distracting though.
