you can vote for 1, 2, or 3 of the following nominees:

    MEM
    thedoctor
    PJP
    uschi
    bsams
    mxy
    son of mxy
    llance
    sneaky
    mister jla
    WBAM
    r3x29yz4a
    pariah
or, a request of "no moderator"

all votes are public, to help weed out the flow of alt votes, so just respond with who y'wants. the "no mod" request would have to finish in first for that to take effect.

voting ends sunday, december 3, at 11:59 pm est

change it to r3x. I would be too hands off to be considered a moderator. I don't believe in moving threads or stopping trolls. If there are going to be mods here there should be 4 not 3. 2 slightly to the left and 2 slightly to the right. And if that is allowed than add MEM to my list. But thanks to whoever voted for me anyhow.

I am no longer an active poster on these boards, however I do read them and keep in contact with many of the people who I met here. What I also have is distance and perspective, coupled with a lingering sense of distaste when I think about what the Deep Thoughts forum has become.

I have the following things to say:

1.

Voting for no mod will preserve the status quo. It will leave The G-man free to do all the things that, in my opinion, have dragged this board ass backwards. People like this, evidently lacking in any kind of self restraint, need to be managed rather than promoted to positions of responsibility. If you leave this forum unmanaged, The G-man will take charge in an unofficial capacity and it will effectively continue along the same lines as it did when he was in power.

2.

Divvying control of this forum along partisan lines and expecting some kind of balance to emerge is pure stupidity. One party will inevitably shout louder than the other.

You need people of good character managing (not controlling) this forum. People who are intelligent, who have a measure of self-control and who have a sense of humour. I am voting for:

Uschi,
Son of Mxy,
Sneaky

3.

This is a discussion forum. It is not a political rally; nor is it one of those execrable mud-slinging campaign advertisements that get shown incessantly on TV, whenever America is about to go to the polls.

There needs to be more of an effort made, by the people beginning threads, to present a balanced foundation for discussion. Currently a lot of threads seem designed to breed resentment and rub people up the wrong way. As an example of this you need look no further than The G-man’s self aggrandising: Who's More Generous: Liberals or Conservatives?

A thread like this is less concerned with any ensuing discussion, than it is with getting-in a cheap, below the belt punch. This kind of shit erodes the credibility of anything that is discussed on these boards and it needs to end.

It might be asking a bit too much, but I believe that anyone starting an new thread on this forum needs to make the sincere effort to present both sides of the argument, as a balanced press article would. It’s a discipline that would separate the people who want to land a cheap shot, from those who are genuinely willing to enter into open minded debate.

I think also that the wording of post titles needs to be looked into and, in some instances, changed to something less inflammatory .

4.

One thing that is used on other message boards and which might work here:

At the bottom of the first post of each new thread there should be a FOCUS: This should be a neutral outline of the general points that are up for discussion – things that will provoke debate and encourage brainstorming.

5.

The number of active posters on this board is low. Consequently there is no excuse for the Deep Thoughts forum to have sunk to the lows that it has. Weed out the extremists. These people often shout the loudest, but they also have the least to say. If you vote fucktards like this into power, they will be a thorn in your side for the foreseeable future.

the option to have no moderator would have to be the majority vote recipient for it to have value. those who voted for "no mod" don't want any mod -- having 2 or 3 wouldn't make a difference.

I think there's a sampling/statistical problem here, Rob.

Each person gets, by your count, three votes, correct?

So, for example, I could, if I wanted mods, vote for (for example) Uschi, Sneaky and Pariah. I'd get three votes.

However, a person who wants "no mods" only gets one vote.

So, to be fair, shouldn't each "no mod" vote count three times?
Posted By: Rob Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 12:39 AM
no.

every person has an opportunity to vote. you can pick no mod, or you can pick a mod (or two or three). as of the above post, 7 people voted for no mod, and 13 voted for uschi.

that means, as of that post, there are more people who want uschi to be a mod than there are people who want no mods.
Posted By: Jason E. Perkins Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 12:53 AM
In that case, I should be able to add two more votes to my "no mod" vote, yes?

r3x29yz4a and doc, then.

However, the person who wants, for example, Uschi, also gets two more votes for two additional mods, for a total of three votes.

The person who wants "no mods" only gets that one vote.

Really, the proper way to do this would have been to first poll "should there be a mod". Then, if the "yes" votes outweighed the "no" votes, proceed to a question of how many mods. Then, once the number was selected, people would vote on who those mods should be.

but you'd either vote to have mods or vote against, wouldn't you?

13 people have thus far waived their option to vote for no mod, and instead, chose to vote for a mod; uschi.

why would the 7 current "no mod" votes get to equal the majority, 21, when the majority have thus far opted to have mods?

i ... really didn't think this would be so complicated.

the answer above that i gave to your post that...no... longer exists is pretty straight forward. currently, more people want a mod than no mod. thats it.

There are people in elections offices laughing at you right now, Rob.

Posted By: the G-man Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 1:04 AM
Okay, so now that it has been decreed that there are to be mods and, apparently, three mods, do those of us who voted "no mod" get to go back and recast our votes? And, if so, do we get three votes or just our remaining two votes?
Posted By: Rob Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 1:05 AM
the election is over on sunday, florida.
Posted By: the G-man Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 1:07 AM
I take that to mean, yes, we can rescind our "no mod" votes and recast them for three mods.
Posted By: Rob Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 1:12 AM
it means the election isn't over yet, and more people could vote for no mod. or whoever.

I'm not sure why you would object to my questions, Doc.

As it stands, you're in a tie for third place. If, as I theorized, those of us who voted for "no mods" are able to change their votes between now and Sunday, there's a good chance at least some of those votes would go to you, thereby increasing your chance of taking third place.

If you vote 'no mod', it's a single vote for no mod. If you vote for up to three mods, that's a single vote for mods. I really don't care how this election comes out. Notice that I have not once said anything about my nomination one way or the other. I'll go with the flow on this. I don't really give a damn.

uh no. as far as i understand rob... see, you already voted. your "no mod" vote counts as a single vote. just as those who voted for mods is a single vote containing three specific people. yadda yadda.

No.

A "single vote" for "no mods" is just that. One vote. "No Mod" gets one vote and only one, from that voter. That voter gets one vote.

In contrast, a "single vote" for a slate of mods (for example: Uschi, Sneaky, Doc) results in three votes from a voter: One for Uschi, one for Sneaky, one for Doc. Each of which goes towards that person's total number of votes.

But Rob just said that the votes were for individual mods. If it was one vote for three people, then that means the votes should be tallied as a vote for those three, not three votes respectively split up between the three individuals.

But that's not exactly fair though. Technically, "No Mod" should get three votes if Rob is going to allow us to vote three times.

I actually think we should vote once for just a certain set of mods, but if we're gonna havta vote this way, then it's more fair that a vote for "No mod" be proportionate to a vote for three people.

While I understand that Rob is more concerned with a stacked conglomeration of equally distributed votes, I think the set up is flawed for the reasons G-man pointed out.

If you voted for no mod, you get two more votes, methinks.

By getting 3 votes when there will be only 2 mods you're telling people to vote for thier 3 top choices knowing that they'll only get at best 2 of those choices. So if your top choice is "no mod" then you should also get to vote for two mods. The vote would be saying this "I would prefer to have no mods, but if there are going to be mods I would prefer it to be one or both of the following people" So if you voted "no mod" then just vote two more times and if Rob chooses not to count those additional votes I would be interested in hearing how it's "not fair".

That's easy for you to say. You're in second place. You're getting what you want.

Now I'll argue for what I want. G-man's right, there should have been two elections. One for whether or not there would be mods, and one for who those mods should be (in that order for obvious reasons). Principally, those are two separate issues--the existence of mods and who, if any, those mods should be. It's akin to asking us how many AND who on the same ballot. In fact, that's exactly what it is. So, yeah, I'm not even concerned about how much one should weigh in comparison to another, per se, cuz it's apples and oranges.

But whatever. Seems the majority DO want mods (though I wonder if that would have been the case had the question been asked the way G-man proposed). Still, I've believed from the start that this should be Rob's decision. His boards, his rules. If this is the way he wants it, cool. I've added my two other votes already. I just hope they'll be considered, since I obviously didn't know the rules beforehand.
Posted By: Matter-eater Man Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-02 4:36 AM
If you understood the rules going in why should a "No Mod" voter get special treatment then the rest of us? Did any of the disenfranchised feel that they would get to vote twice if "no mod" looked like it wasn't going to win the first time they voted???

Well, in essence, to make his or her vote count as much as the next person, a person who believes this forum shouldn't have mods would have to put down TWO votes for mods who he doesn't even want against his ONE vote against having any mods. In that case, for us all to be equal, the vote for no mods has to fail by at least two to one.

Which, again, is why this system is fundamentally flawed.

so do it and let Rob decide. Like Wednesday did a page and a half ago that got totally jumped over in the conversation until just a post or two ago.

Besides, it is just a message board moderator for one forum. Since G-Man's not in the running I really don't think there's anything to fear of someone going overboard. I, for one, am proposing a light moderating example with a minimum of effort. I have a goddamn life, you know? And it isn't like a moderator has SO MUCH POWER! Christ, they won't bomb the UN. This isn't an earth-shattering vote. This is like voting for the kind of pizza you and your friends are going to buy.

I guess I don't think it's fair changing things at this point. It may have made sense having just a mod or no mod vote first but at this point hypothetically some people are seeing potential results they might not care for & want a redo. That's not fair to everyone else.

so, basically, after weeding through the most recent 4+ pages of debate as to whether or not the public message board vote for moderators in 1 forum was fair or not... only 2 or 3 more people have voted sine my last update; bsams and sweden (and sorta wednesday). i'll go back to double check tomorrow, when i wanna waste time at work (or, in the meantime, feel free to point out how i counted wrong and provide correct tallies)

here's the list of those who have voted:
r3x29yz4a, pjp, ttt, mxy, dogbert, pro, klint, beardguy, chant, pariah, gman, rex, glacier, mem, sneaky, scooter, bw7, lothar, snarf, capn, uschi, jaburg, jla, wbam, allan1, wednesday, bsams, sweden

and if the count is correct, here's the final:
    Uschi - 11111111111111 (14)
    Sneaky - 1111111111 (10)
    no moderator - 11111111 (8)
    Thedoctor - 1111111 (7)
    r3x29yz4a - 1111111 (7)
    son of mxy - 11111 (5)
    WBAM - 1111 (4)
    misterjla - 111 (3)
    pariah - 111 (3)
    PJP - 111 (3)
    MEM - 1 (1)
    Mxy - 1 (1)

as it stands, 14 individuals asked to be lead by uschi and 10 supported sneaky. 8 posters requested no moderator... unless of course "no mod" receives the semi-popular super enhancement, in which case it dominated with 700 votes.

r3x and doc tied it up for third with 7 votes a piece.

to make nicey nice, i'll let the 7 "no mod" voters pick either r3x or doc for the third and final spot. the 7 voters are: ttt, mxy, dogbert, beardguy, chant, gman, and bsams (wednesday was the 8th, and he already voted)

y'gots til wednesday at midnight, EST.

(and congrats to uschi and sneaky. i'll see you two in 4 months when the shit hits the fan again!)

I think doc would do a better job, so I'm gonna vote for r3x.
Posted By: thedoctor Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-04 5:41 PM
But Ray will only be a mod for three weeks before Rob takes away his mod status!

I'm voting for doc because he says he doesn't care. Which means he does.

so, basically, after weeding through the most recent 4+ pages of debate as to whether or not the public message board vote for moderators in 1 forum was fair or not... only 2 or 3 more people have voted sine my last update; bsams and sweden (and sorta wednesday). i'll go back to double check tomorrow, when i wanna waste time at work (or, in the meantime, feel free to point out how i counted wrong and provide correct tallies)

here's the list of those who have voted:
r3x29yz4a, pjp, ttt, mxy, dogbert, pro, klint, beardguy, chant, pariah, gman, rex, glacier, mem, sneaky, scooter, bw7, lothar, snarf, capn, uschi, jaburg, jla, wbam, allan1, wednesday, bsams, sweden

and if the count is correct, here's the final:
    Uschi - 11111111111111 (14)
    Sneaky - 1111111111 (10)
    no moderator - 11111111 (8)
    Thedoctor - 1111111 (7)
    r3x29yz4a - 1111111 (7)
    son of mxy - 11111 (5)
    WBAM - 1111 (4)
    misterjla - 111 (3)
    pariah - 111 (3)
    PJP - 111 (3)
    MEM - 1 (1)
    Mxy - 1 (1)

as it stands, 14 individuals asked to be lead by uschi and 10 supported sneaky. 8 posters requested no moderator... unless of course "no mod" receives the semi-popular super enhancement, in which case it dominated with 700 votes.

r3x and doc tied it up for third with 7 votes a piece.

to make nicey nice, i'll let the 7 "no mod" voters pick either r3x or doc for the third and final spot. the 7 voters are: ttt, mxy, dogbert, beardguy, chant, gman, and bsams (wednesday was the 8th, and he already voted)

y'gots til wednesday at midnight, EST.

(and congrats to uschi and sneaky. i'll see you two in 4 months when the shit hits the fan again!)

No, silly, I know he voted for me. It's just that in this:

I didn't initially (or over the second and third scan) see bw7 - or at least I didn't mentally process it as backwards7.

r3x has 1 vote (mxy) and doc has 3 (dogbert, beardguy, gman)

chant, bsams, and ttt still have to vote -- 1 more "doc" nod gives him the win.

bullshit.
g-man changed his vote and you can't accept a vote days after the fact.

g-man changed his vote after the voting ended.

chant was the only one of the 7 who didn't vote yet, so when it ended in a tie, he became the tie-breaker.

i was in talks with g-man and he agreed to change his vote before the voting ended. and he told me he had messaged you saying as much before the voting ended.
chant waited days to vote, days after your own imposed deadline. regardless of when g-man posted his change here, he told you before the deadline.
and even if you do just count his change as late, if you want to count chant's late vote then you have to consider all late voting.
Posted By: the G-man Re: pick yer mods! - 2006-12-10 2:12 AM
Point of information, Ray. Actually I didn't message Rob. I posted the question here in the thread as to whether I could change my vote.

I never got a response, but then tried to change my vote anyway. I thought I did so before the voting ended.

But anyway...at one point there was talk, I think by you, Rob, that more forums would be subject to new elections.

Is that so?

well as i said even if you hadn't pmd rob that night, if rob counts chant's late vote then he has to count your late (though earlier than chant's) change of vote.
