Been done before, but let's see if anyone's changed their mind.

Levitz? Giffen? Cary Bates? Jim Shooter? DnA? Nominees please?????

It's kinda close -- I loved TMK and Giffen did help out with a lot of during the Levitz era (though to what degree I don't know). But TMK wouldn't have meant anything without the Levitz era ... but of course Giffen completely left out Wildfire and gutted Dawnstar's character, so I'll go with:

Paul Levitz

This is worse than 2nd favorite legionnaire!

First gut response is Jim Shooter, his stories got me hooked for life and I still enjoy reading them. And I'd love to see the "lost" Shooter story.

The Levitz era was fantastic. The TMK stories remain among my favorites of all comics. And I'm enjoying DnA, but they're current - so I'll wait to see how they stand the test of time.

Given how much I love the Adventure-era stuff, I'd have to say Shooter.

But props to Levitz and TMK all the same.

Honorable mention to J.M. DeMatteis, author of the now-classic Dr. Mayavale issue.

It really wasn't a bad concept at all, a villain who is reincarnating - but something about the eight arms and white afro - don't know if we blame Ditko for that or DeMatteis.

I'll go with Shooter. His stories were shorter than Levitz's sprawling epics, and his villains more memorable than those of any other Legion writer. Levitz utilized the Legion's large cast to better advantage, but Shooter had a way of making one- or two-issue stories with a complete plot and plenty of character development. He was the condensed Levitz, in other words.

It was for a short ride, but I loved the Bierbaums and Chris Sprouse on the Legionaires run.

Same here -- I liked the petty squabbles within the ranks. Some of them seemed to have pretty distinct personalities rather than all be model citizens and optimistic scouts.

And of course Sprouse made them all look really really good.

EXACTLY! That's what made the LSH so unique from the Avengers, JLA and such. In some respects it was like high school all over again. I loved how there was a jock clique of Ultra Boy, Live Wire, Inferno and Ferro with Matter Eater Lad as the hanger-on. There should be more displays like this in the current book.

And Sprouse captured their look perfectly. He even gave all of them different colored eyes. Not many artists do that.

It's true there don't seem to be the cliques and sub-groups in this series that would be so natural in any group of people.

I also find it a bit strange that the only couples we've had are Jo & Tinya (more or less) and Garth (deceased?) and Imra. Not looking for more marriages, but shouldn't teenagers/young adults be continually forming and breaking-up relationships? Wonder why DnA are avoiding this?

If I had to pick a fave that would be it. I really like most of the past writers though. The characters really had the most distinct personalities IMHO.
