Has anyone seen the promos for "Date my mom"? It's from the makers of "Meet my Folks"...lie detector tests for potential dates, getting caught in compromising positions. Had to laugh at the ridiculousness of it. On of the lie detector questions posed to the potential date for mom bt one of the sons, "Would you resent me if I put you in an old folks home" (assuming he marries this guys mom). Another clip had the 3 sons catching mom in the shower with her date!! Talk about needing future therapy!! And this is NBC!!!

what, exactly, is considered reality tv?
the name gets tossed around a lot, but... i dunno, it seems kinda over- and mis-used.
a show like "the mole," for example, i would never label as "reality tv." to me, thats a gameshow. id even say the same about survivor. itsa buncha regular people competing at stuff against each other for prizes -- the same premise as wheel of fortune. in the jungle.

I suppose the definition of reality TV would be any show that doesn't use a script, or at least relies heavily on unscripted responses. Then again, that loose definition would include game shows also.

I think the difference is that, say, "Wheel of Fortune" lasts a half hour, is a one day deal, and "the mole" is weeks-long, catches candid moments, the cameras are on 24-7, capturing these people doing daily activites, like eating, getting dressed in the morning, etc. Even though the results are highly edited versions, they capture more of "life" than a very structured 1/2 hour show.

so what about a show like the view?
its an hour (...right?), once a day, features people just talking about whatever and being candid, in a regular-day setting, has featured guests or events....
or cops? izzat reality tv?
i dunno -- i certainly see what you're saying. but i think i'd only apply the reality tv term to shows like the real world or the ozbournes or anna nicole.

Good point....reality shows are shows that just film people in their settings & their lives & what's going on.There's no money involved or prizes to win.Shows like Survivor & The Mole & such are just different types of game shows that last an hour.Most of these shows suck hard ass & I see little redeeming value in watching them.The Mole(the first two anyway) was enjoyable to watch.The games were cool....it was challenging to figure out who the Mole was & the player interaction was funny to watch.Now shows like Married By America are the stupidest thing I have ever seen & think whoever came up with that crap should be tied to a chair & zapped repeatedly with a cattle prod while watching Steel Magnolias over & over again.

The view is a talk show, definitely structured and scripted (to the extent that questions are prepared, guests prepped, etc). Cops would be reality tv, filming events as they happen in real life. I guess you could say the mole and survivor are a new category of reality game shows, though not that new because MTV has been doing that with road rules for years...

I cant stand anything labeled "reality show" I specially hate those "married on live tv kinda things" like married by america, the bachelor etc. I wish I could shot them all and send them straight to hell!
