I think Achilles Last Stand is superior to the rest of their output combined. That said, they're one of those bands where you really need a compilation disc to do them justice.

Well, any real list would have a Steely Dan album. [yuh huh] Seriously. [nyah hah]

I don't want to make a list because I'm not that well-informed with classic rock. But some that I know would be on mine:

But wait... can we use "Best of.." or compilation discs? [eh?]

If you listen to a lot of styles, it's pretty hard limiting it to only 10 discs. I tried to avoid compilations, going with some live discs instead.

For Steely Dan I'd nominate Royal Scam as their crowning acheivement.

Almost impossible to narrow it down to "only" 10!

By the way, I recently got a copy of the MONO mix of THEIR SATANIC MAJESTY'S REQUEST... wow!!! No more of that awful "fake stereo" mix hurting my ears while I'm trying to enjoy the great music!

Let's give it a shot...

The Beatles -- REVOLVER
The Monkees -- PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD.
The Move -- SHAZAM
The Moody Blues -- DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED
Blue Oyster Cult -- FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN
Rick Nelson -- RICK IS 21
John Fogerty -- BLUE MOON SWAMP
Paul McCartney & Wings -- BAND ON THE RUN
Roy Wood's Wizzard -- INTRODUCING EDDY & THE FALCONS
Meat Loaf -- BAT OUT OF HELL
Rick Wakeman -- JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH
Emerson, Lake & Palmer -- BRAIN SALAD SURGERY
The Patridge Family -- SOUND MAGAZINE

Now this is shocking. And I don't mean in that condescending "The Monkees didn't play their own music" way, either. No one but the Stones and Beatles played their own music at that point. But I digress.

PAC&J? I always grooved on Headquarters a bit more. Headquarters had the advantage of being a completely Monkees album, with Micky playing the drums, Whereas PAC&J had Fast Eddie Hoh on the skins. Plus, Headquarters had a real Garage band feel... it was raw, and had a bit more soul than PAC&J. Sounded like something any four fuckers could pull off with a little time, patience, and practice. PAC&J was slicker, and had some decent songs written for it (even the ones that never made the album, like Goin' Down and Daydream Believer)... but Headquarters just had that intangible "it".

And Monkees wise... after those two mentioned above, their next best album was The Monkees Present. Listen to the Band and all of Papa Nez's country rock stuff made that album... and the First National Band the next year (See where I get my name now?).

JMO, Your fuckin' mileage will vary.

PACJ had "Love Is Only Sleeping", "Cuddly Toy", "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round", "Daily Nightly" and "Star Collector"... MY GOD! And it's not even a greatest hits package!! It also had the remake of "Words" (I always preferred the slower, moodier original) and, most irritatingly, the stereo remix of "Pleasant Valley Sunday"-- the best song they ever did, but BEST in the original 45 MONO mix!!! (Why EVER have more than one mix??? and these days they put out CD-singles with as many as 8 different mixes... why... WHY?????)

To me, there had NEVER been a "perfect" Monkees album-- EVERY ONE of 'em in the 60's had at least one song on it I hated. This, for my FAVORITE band. The only "perfect" Monkees album ever --sort of-- was DOLENZ, JONES, BOYCE & HART (1976), which strangely remains out-of-print. GET ON THE BALL, Rhino Records!!!!!

MISSING LINKS VOLUME TWO was the closest they got to perfect-- but only if you skip over a cuple of really bad ones. (And ALL of 'em were "previously unreleased"-- doesn't this make ytou shake you head at the corporate music machines???)

Actually, you'd have to bitch to Varese Sarabande for the DJB&H Stuff... they're the ones who released the live album (plus all of Johnny Cash's Sun Records stuff!).

Arguing between Headquarters and PAC&J is really like arguing between Po-tay-to and po-tah-to... Because those two were the best of the original catalogue. But PAC&J loses a few style points for Davy's "Hard To Believe". Goin' Down doesn't get a spot on the album, but that does?

And I also agree on Missing Links, Vol. 2. For that one, if they'd replaced the middle stretch of 2 with some of the better stuff on Vol. 3, it would've been the ultimate Monkees collection.

I never knew there were other Monkees freaks out there...

Agree about the two records, but I'd probably give Pisces the edge as well, for the early synth experiments (with synth pioneer Paul Beaver helping out) and some of their best psychedelic pop tunes. But then, my all time favorite Monkee moment is "Porpoise Song", so what do I know?

As for "Hard To Believe", maybe they just wanted Davy to feel included. :)

And THIS, dear friends, is PRECISELY what CD-writers were created for!!! (Oh, I LOVE making custom comps!!! Like putting together a copy of PACJ with the 45 version of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" INSTEAD of the bogus one that's always been on the LP.)

Funny thing about the moog sythesizer-- Micky "played" it on "Daily Nightly"-- he claimed it weas even cooler when you let the machine "play itself"! Also-- ever notice HOW MUCH the moog playing on "Star Collector" sounds like the moog playing on "Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression" by E.L.P.???

Plant and Bonham should have been able to compensate for that, but it doesn't work. It's all excess, with not enough heart or feel.

"And I love the music of Yes, King Crimson"

Crimson is one of those bands I like in most of their incarnations in the 70s, but I couldn't find any ONE album of theirs to list. With them, I like to take various tracks and make my own best-of for them.

My very favorite King Crimson Songs
were on their FIRST Lp, entitled
" IN The Court Of The Crimson King "

They are :

1 ) In the Court of the
Crimson King.

2 ) I talk to The Wind.

My favorite Yes Album?

Cannot name it, but I have a
great compilation of Yes songs
I made myself from their first
five albums -

1 ) Yes

2 ) Time And A word

3 ) The Yes album

4 ) Fragile

5 ) Close to the Edge

I don't really enjoy music by them
recorded after Close To The Edge.

Rick Wakeman's " The 6 Wives of
Henry the 8 th " was really good.

I like Kansas, especially their
" Masque " album.

I left the Beatles off the List
because I love all their albums,
though " Something New " Hard Days'
Night ", " Beatles 65 ", " Rubber
Soul ", " Yesterday And Today ",
" Revolver " and " Sargent Pepper's
Lonely Heart's Club Band " Really
Do Stand out.

They are My FAVORITE band, followed
after that by The Who, Pink Floyd,
Yes, and Emerson, Lake, & Palmer.

I listed the ten albums I did
because I like a wide variety
of songs, groups, and types of
music.

Let's NOT forget groups like
The Doors, Buffalo Springfield,
The Kinks, Wishbone Ash,
Aerosmith ( Love Get Your Wings! )
CSN & Y, The Yardbirds, and The
Animals.

Let us NOT forget the One hit wonders,
too!

StrawBerry Alarm Clock - Incense and
Peppermints

Shocking Blue - Venus

SugarLoaf - Green Eyed Lady

Zager & Evans - In the Year 2525

I could go ON and ON about music
but I have things to do today.

I think highly of King Crimson's first album. I also like RED. John Wetton seemed well suited to that band.

As far as Yes...I put my favorite Yes album on my list...CLOSE TO THE EDGE. Listen to that album and you can understand why Bill Bruford thought that Yes would never anything other than make "Son of CTTE" for the rest of their careers. And he's been quite often right.

I dont understand people debating which album is best by any band as surely its all just a matter of taste!

Take Metallica as a perfect example!
There are people who will claim that the black album is the first bad album they did, while other people think that it was the greatest album they ever did!
Who`s right & who`s wrong?
Nobody,thats who!

I have albums in my collection that I never play cause I think they are shit, but thats just my perception & I know people who love those albums to death!
