Halo 2? Never heard of it.

Seriously though, I was watching CNN (forgive me, Fox News!) and they reported that Halo 2 will bring in some 70 million dollars...which is as much as a major motion picture's opening weekend.

I don't remember the exact figures, but that's unreal for a video game.

A buddy of mine got the reserved Limited Edition at the 24-hour Wal-Mart last night at 12am. He said there was a long ass line at the electronics section. If this is what Halo2 is like, Half Life 2 is going to be insane!

Probably not. PC games are not nearly as big as the consoles.

A detailed review from Game Spot (spoiler safe)

Gamespot gave it 9.4. Summing up, they say that it's a superb game but only subtley different from Halo: Combat Evolved. There are new enemies, vehicles and weapons and a few minor tweaks in the gameplay. Overall everything seems to play out on a slightly larger scale.

On the minus side, the single player campaign is short, has a weak storyline and apparently ends quite abruptly. The repetitive level design from its predecessor also makes a return.

Several of my friends own XBOXs and I'm looking forward to seeing this and maybe teaming up in 2 player co-op mode.

IGN said the story was better, so I guess its a matter of opinion.

I doubt it'll beat San Andreas on the PS2 for sales as there just arent as many X-Box owners as PS2 owners!

'Halo 2 Flu' Overtakes The Country As Game Goes On Sale
11.09.2004 5:32 PM EST

NEW YORK — If there was an increase in the number of people who took the day off from work or stayed home from school Tuesday, it may not have been the flu that kept them at home and on the couch.
shooters, went on sale Tuesday (November 9) at midnight, and thousands of people around the country waited in line for hours, just to be among the first to get their hands on what promises to be the biggest video game of the year.

"It's the 'Halo 2' flu!" 29-year-old Brooklyn, New York, resident Dimitri said as he waited in line at the Toys R Us in Times Square, explaining why he, like so many other die-hard fans of the game, won't be leaving his living room for the foreseeable future.

"I don't think there's going to be a lot of work done tomorrow," concurred Miguel, 36, from Queens, New York.

If a dip in the labor force does indeed impact the economy, Microsoft, the publisher and developer of "Halo 2," won't be suffering. More than 1.5 million copies of "Halo 2" were sold through pre-sale, and Microsoft is estimated to rake in more than $100 million after the first day. One of the improvements "Halo 2" has over the original is Xbox Live, the subscription service that allows players to compete against one another online. In its first day supporting "Halo 2," Xbox Live broke its one-day record for most users: At press time, more than 108,000 unique users were online trying to blast each other's brains out.

"Bill Gates is even richer tonight!" screamed 18-year-old Johann from Brooklyn as he waited to add his $49.99 to the Microsoft kitty.

Some fans weren't satisfied with buying "Halo 2" on the first day; they had to buy the game first, period. Paul Girardi and Joe Delea, both 22 and from Staten Island, New York, began their sidewalk sit-in at 10 a.m., some 14 hours before the game went on sale.

"We didn't think we would be first, but no one was crazy enough to be here before us," Girardi said, his hair colored bright green in honor of the event. A greasepainted "Halo 2" logo, meanwhile, adorned Delea's face.

Their long wait paid dividends when Girardi and Delea were allowed inside the store an hour early to get a first-hand look at the game in a makeshift VIP area complete with a dozen LAN-linked flatscreen TV sets, an open bar, a snack table, and a surprise visit from "Halo" fan and New Jersey Nets star Richard Jefferson. The time outside must have taken its toll on the guys' appetites: Upon entering the room, they made a beeline for the chicken satay, fried dumplings and other hot hors d'oeuvres.

After posing for photos with a Bungie Studios executive and a guy dressed up as the game's protagonist Master Chief — and being taped for an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" — the guys finally had copies of the game ceremonially presented to them by noted "Halo" fanatic and star of "That '70s Show" Wilmer Valderrama. As a member of the "Halo 2" Council, Valderrama got his copy a few days earlier, but that doesn't mean his jones for the game has subsided any.

"The best thing about 'Halo 2' is not only are you this one guy who's the chosen one, you're also this bad-ass guy who can kick ass everywhere you put him," he said. "Every single one of my friends — even the guy who plays the dad on ["That '70s Show"] Kurtwood Smith, he's a 'Halo' fan, too. It's so random, everybody's so excited to play each other. You can be at home and the other player can be in New York. It's sick."

Besides looking for Valderrama online, players can search for him within the game, too.

"There's a bunch of celebrity voices in the game," he said, "so you might be able to make some of them out. I know that a few things that I said may have gotten into the game, but I'm not sure since I haven't finished the entire thing yet. As one of the soldiers, I said, 'Boy, that looks like taco meat.' "

"I'm immortal," he added, as a smile overcame his face. "I'll be forever a part of this game."

My brain hurts, I''ve been playing all day every day since midnight Tuesday. The only reason I've been able to post here is because it takes a few minutes to link up match games.

The game made 125 million its first day--not 70 as people thought. When the day came, people thought it was going to be around 100, maybe nearing 150. 125 exceeds expectations.

Yes, I bought it. I beat the Easy level in three days. Half-way through normal. Haven't tried multi-player co-op. Still looking for differences in the various degrees of difficulty.

That was one of the things I liked about games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Time Splitters only SLIGHTY touched on the theme--here it goes--

The difference between difficulties was not just enemy AI, or number of shots needed to kill, or your own player's vulnerability (he became weaker). There was also more REQUIREMENTS/OBJECTIVES. You needed to scout around, and kill someone, acquire something, unlock something or destroy something. It was cool. But going beyond that, Perfect Dark created a REASON to play the game more (and on harder levels of difficulty). Only certain routes, doorways, and areas of the map were accessible on different levels. To gain access to the full map, or all routes, you needed to play the game on the hardest level, and I can't remember if that was available from the beginning, or if you had to beat the game at least once or twice.

Moving that idea to Halo, they don't incorporate it. No added objectives, no other passages or alternate routes. If you never played Perfect Dark or GoldenEye, think of the SSX games, remember how you could break through a secret passage to go down the hill/mountain/path? Wasn't it cool?

Halo is a great game. The use of vehicles (jeeps, tanks, turrets, flying vehicles) to go along with a 1st-person shooter, co-op abilities, and freedom to compete against your friends on your television or online make it a great game, BUT, I do wish it had those little additions.

I make that gripe because I compare the great qualities of 1st person shooters, seeing what makes a game great. Things like a gun that has two capabilities (first featured in Dark Forces, and later utilized in Perfect Dark). That would have been nice. Automatic, semi-automatic. The game offers some of those features, but not all weapons have them.

And as it was mentioned, there is the sudden ending. That bothered me, and is a reason I am still playing. The first game offered slight variations of the ending, and I am hoping that Bungie might be doing what other companies (like Rare) do, offer the real ending on the hardest setting. Otherwise, this game is kind of just a big setup for Halo 3, and Xbox 2.

Words not violence, break the silence. Maybe.

I was dissapointed in the ending. It was just a sort of "Hey, we're leaving it open for Halo 3' without really having an ending. Perhaps this means there will be an expansion of downloadable levels to complete the story, but if not it falls very flat.

I was playing it the other day and noticed there were some graphical errors that are very apparent cinematics when zooming. For some reason the faces don't seem to appear as if the draw distance is a foor ahead or something and just appears as a blob until you get "face to face" and it was a little brighter than I wished (At times I thought that everyone in Deathmatch were going to place their morphers together and form the Master-Zord ) and there needs some better anti-aliasing.

But my friends are crazy over it, and it makes the kids happy.

Halo 2 sales eclipse 5 million

Microsoft releases numbers on Bungie's shooter; franchise now tops 11 million units sold.
Halo 2 took nearly three years to develop--but it was apparently worth the wait. Microsoft has announced that sales of the sequel to the Xbox's flagship game have exceeded 5 million copies since its highly publicized release on November 9.

When combined with the sales numbers from the original Halo, which launched alongside the Xbox in 2001, the Halo 2 figures put the franchise's sales at a whopping 11 million units--with the holiday retail season still not over.

Also, Halo 2 online play has been rampant. Xbox Live support reports the game has garnered more than 28 million hours of online play, already more than any other Xbox Live title to date. More than 900,000 unique Xbox Live gamers have experienced Halo 2 online at an average of over 90 minutes per session.

The game's launch spurred more than 1.5 million preorders, several midnight sales events around the globe, and first-day sales of more than $100 million. Its release, along with a shortage in PlayStation 2 consoles, has also boosted Xbox console sales during the holiday season.
