Recently DC released a second Sandman Mystery Theatre as a tpb, and also Morrison's Sebastien O and Doom Patrol.

The rationale for this was that the market had matured to the pioint that such sales were now feasible.

Its an interesting observation, that the growth of Vertigo now supports the reprint of old Vertigo stuff.

But DC had other titles in the past which would have been published as Vertigo, if they were simply ten years later.

Setting aside Watchmen (whcih almost certainly would have been a Vertigo publication now, and which has been reprinted many times), the two which immediately leap to mind are:

1. Thriller - a story set in the near future, most famous for Scabbard (a scary Arab terrorist who kept a large sword in a sheath made of skin attached to his spine) who later, oddly, appeared in Ambush Bug. Thriller was an excellent idea, well before its time, with an eye to the influence of the media,

2. Wasteland - a horror anthology.

Any others?

It'd probably be published still as a DC imprint. As would Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew.

I still remember being genuinely freaked out by a story in one of the issues of GHOSTS as a kid. I remember that being a better series than HOUSE OF MYSTERY, though I liked WEIRD WAR TALES best of all of DC's horror comics.

I've read some House of Mystery and House of Secret stories and haven't been even mildly impressed by any of those... They remind me of the lame Tales from the Crypt cartoon, only less sophisticated.

You can thank the Comics Code for that. But I'd like to see all the DC Horror titles get collections, including Flinch.

No, that was G.I. COMBAT. WEIRD WAR TALES had no ongoing feature until late in its run when it introduced the very silly G.I. Robot and The Creature Commandos features.

The good ones are few and far between, and even they don't really hold up to today's standards.

WEIRD WAR TALES was great for all the sci-fi stories it did on occasion. TIME WARP was another good one, yet short-lived. MYSTERY IN SPACE was revived as a sci-fi horror comic for a while, too.

American comics don't have anything on par with the UK's 2000 A.D., though, at least as concerns a sci-fi anthology.

One series I'd like to see collected, which could fit as Vertigo, is Gilgamesh II, written by Jim Starlin.

Mxy has mentioned Flinch before, I think. I missed it entirely. Was it good?

Flinch was a surprisingly good anthology series. Someone once posted that the major trouble it had was that some writers would just dust off rejected concepts for the series. I think it was more a case of the editors not knowing how to promote it. But I enjoyed it - I have the full series and it's interesting how many solid witers and artists were involved, right up 'till the end.

I've never read Flinch, Dave. Why do you spend some much time planting seeds for chaos, Dave? Is this a communist ploy to destroy society?

The Shadow: The 4-issue "Blood and Judgment" miniseries by Howard Chaykin, and then the ongoing series that followed, written by Andy Helfer and drawn first by Bill Sienkiwicz, and later, Kyle Baker. They were late-'80s mature readers DC books, so they were just ahead of their time for the Vertigo treatment. Unfortunately, the zany, dark, mayhem-packed ongoing series was never completed, as the owners of the rights to the Shadow didn't care for their character being decapitated and his idiot twin sons grafting his head to a robot body. A more "straight-forward" (less edgy) period piece series, The Shadow Strikes, followed. Unfortunately, DC doesn't own the rights to The Shadow anymore, so I doubt this will ever be reprinted.

Justice Inc., another pulp hero update for mature readers (dealing with The Avenger), also by Helfer and Baker, a 2-issue miniseries with very experimental art. With Baker's visibility at DC, this could definitely benefit from a rerelease in a slim TPB.

I forgot about those titles. Electric Warrior was average, IIRC. Lords of the Ultra Realm was ok, and Slash Maraud was lame.

The art on electric Warrior was shit. I remeber the story being good as it didn't read like most books of the time.

Slash Maraud would be released as Vertigo today, but I don't think it's good enough to be reprinted.

Denny O'Neil and Rick Maygar's The Question ongoing series from the late 80's was mature, entertaining, and retained a level of quality through all 36 issues (except for the one with The Riddler, where the guest artist flops... I can't think of anything other issue I didn't like). I think it didn't get cancelled, O'Neil ended it because he wanted to try other things, which is a good thing. So, the last arc is great gives closure to the story, and doesn't just end it abruptly when the series has become mediocre like with other comics. I doubt it'll get reprinted, though, cause the issues are selling for like a buck each in milehigh, so it's not a very popular comic.

Had it. Sold it on eBay. Decent series. As with all anthologies...was a little hit or miss. I remember enjoying some things, being bored with others. It'd be cool to see a tpb issued with New Alex Ross cover art...I think he did the first issue.

One of the better Vertigo Anthologies was called Gangland. A four issue series with mob stories. Came out in the late 90's with covers by Tim Bradstreet. Good stuff.

Justice, Inc was literally one of the first comics I ever read...sometime around '74 or '75. Don't remember much about it. The art was Kirby-esque, if not actually produced by the King. The protaganist was a gray skinned guy who had the ability to change his facial features as if they were made of clay.

I too have the Vertigo mini. Don't remember much about that either except that I didn't like the art.

Maybe one of these days I'll go thru my old stuff and give it a re-read.

Dave,

Send me your address, man. My local shop has Justice Inc. #1-2 in the cheapie bin, and I'd happily send them your way for you to keep. You may or may not like them (my guess is you won't have strong feelings either way), but what do you have to lose?

There was a Justice Inc. miniseries from the '70s, and I believe Kirby actually did do the art in #2-4. But the pre-Vertigo one is the one I was referring to, the only one I've read.
