"i can live with [that]" isn't exactly excitement about the casting. at best, its mediocre pre-praise of a part that turned out to be amazing. which, really, is just an extension of the mentality that something that seems out of place and destined for terrible can surprise you with the right direction, script, and performance.

monster's ball also won berry an oscar ...which didn't translate to her catwoman performance.

Thats neither here nor there, you said he was a crap actor and had only made poor films.

Jolie, has yet to do anything that she has had any real aclaim for.
Even her serious roles such as Gia, have hardly met with huge praise for her acting abilities.

You can probably pull films out of just about any good or great actors resume, that was a stinker, but this does not detract from the rest of their resume.

Look at the cast of the Nolan Bat films.
Pretty much every main actor has had critical aclaim at some point, the only exception being Holmes, and how great was she in the movie?

Oldman, Gyllenhall, Ledger, Freeman, Eckhart, Bale, Caine, Neeson and Murphy all had acclaimed roles before they appeared in a Bat flick, they also had several less acclaimed roles as well.
Now you can put b-movie actors into it, as shown with Hauer and Roberts, if you limit their involvement!

Pretty much any successful movie with Jolie in it, was highly unlikely to have been based on her talent. (obviously Tomb Raider was based on two of her talents).

Did Catwoman fail because of Berry, or did it fail because the film (and especially the story) was shit!

Yeah! A million different daddy stories, but not origins.

i looked at them as similar notions, i.e; "i act like this because, one day, something fucked up happened."

didn't explain the white skin, i guess, but the cracked persona would fit in.

Nah, it was pretty common family abuse stuff, from what I recall. He was just using that to get Harley's sympathy. I believe he also told a happy story about the one time his dad took him ice skating or something.

No, that was the one where his dad takes him to a circus and laughs at the clowns, so Li'l J puts on his dad's trousers and pratfalls, tearing the seat of the pants, and wakes up 3 days later in the hospital after his dad kicks the shit out of him

aye. the "(gary) abusey" kinda stuff was all what lead to the joker's current character persona, at least according to the stories.

Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was....a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me and he says "Why so serious?" Comes at me with the knife,"Why so serious?" He sticks the blade in my mouth. "Let’s put a smile on that face!" And..... Why so serious?

and others said the same about berry / holmes / jolie. its all speculation, and, really, its difficult to say how well someone will do in a situation.

my argument is, that the creators of the movies have been so good, they can take most anyone and get the best out of them.

i never saw it. cuz i thought it looked terrible. but from what little i did see in trailers and such, it seems like the direction of the movie was awful, not (necessarily just) hale berry.

To be fair, she's actually a pretty well-regarded actress by both critics and her peers. She won an Oscar for "Girl Interrupted," and has been nominated and/or won numerous other acting awards, including the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and the National Board of Review. Of course, that's for her "serious" movies, not the action flicks.

And, unlike Halle Berry, she didn't win because of affirmative action.

She's at least as well-regarded as Charlize Theron.

My only real beef with her as Catwoman is that, if anything, she's become too much of a "persona" in her own right and I'd prefer someone a little more "up and coming" who doesn't bring a lot of precoceived image to the film.

What do Oscars actually count for in this day and age?
Girl interrupted?
Is that even remotely famous?

And Rob, please point out in this thread where anyone here has said Berry is not a good actress.

well, if you're discrediting her acting awards and accolades, what are you valuing? you said she's yet to receive acclaim, and she's done quite the opposite.

Brothers Grimm was decent, but I viewed it as a slight step up from Van Helsing. Monster's Ball was a great character movie, but uh...Ledger wasn't in it for long so I don't think that's a great one to base his career off of.

One was not him saying she was a bad actress, the other was made after I asked that question.
Plus, both comments were made by G-Man, which really does not count for much!

Please try to keep up Ray!

I am not talking about awards and prizes, as some of the most highly regarded actors over the years have taken forever to win an oscar.

Acclaim doesnt just come from awards, it comes from articles in print or tv.
It comes from people talking.
It comes from polls.

The fact that G-Man pointed out that Berry won her award because she was black, proves that people dont necessarily win because they are talented.

Perfect example is Girl Interupted.
Jolie won an award for it, but who has actually seen this movie?

so you discredit, or at least belittle, the award systems through which she's won, and also haven't seen the movie where she gets some of her acclaim to even judge for yourself?

seems fair.

Dark Knight at the top again.

 Quote:
The Dark Knight has done it again. For the second straight weekend, despite trailing a new release for total North America box office receipts on Friday, the Warner Bros. smash made a Saturday-Sunday comeback to lead the domestic box office charts for the fourth consecutive weekend.

According to figures reported by boxofficemojo.com, the film tallied an estimated $26 million dollars for the 3-day frame, just 39% below its total last weekend in a continuing show of strong legs and a possible indicator it could eventually break the $500m mark by a healthy margin. Its cumulative total now stands at an estimated $442m, good for #3 on the all-time box office chart. Ironically enough (more on why below), the film will likely pass Star Wars to become the second-highest grossing film ever by the end of next weekend.

Its $26m take also ranks as the third best Fourth Weekend total in box office history, topped only by Titanic and 2002's Spider-Man.

This week's Friday-champ-but-weekend-runner-up was the Judd Apatow stoner-comedy Pineapple Express, which totaled an estimated $22.4m million for the Friday-Sunday frame. The Sony release probably cost itself the weekend win by opening to a combined $18m on Wednesday and Thursday, but Sony will take solace in a robust $40m total for the low budget ($27 million) production.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor tallied $16m, good enough for third place but a steep $60% decline from its opening weekend total. The Universal release has now accumulated $70.7m after ten day in theaters.

Looking ahead to next weekend it will be Batman vs. Jedi Knights as the animated feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars, along with the Ben Stiller/Jack Black/Robert Downey Jr. comedy Tropic Thunder (opening Wednesday) look to final knock The Dark Knight off its month-long perch.

Because ticket prices determine how much money the studio gets. Distribution deals with theaters usually (and especially for really big budget films) have the distributor (in this case Warner Bros.) getting a percentage of the ticket price (usually around 90% for opening weekend and declining each week the movie runs). The more money the studio makes, the more chance that there's gonna be a sequel.

Yes yes yes, but *I* mean for the *reacords*. Ranking the movies by dollars is stupid, taking that film has been around since 1895.

Cuz the studios don't give a shit about how many people saw a movie. They only care about how much money the movie makes them. Keeping track of the actual number of tickets sold would cost money. Money for a number the studios don't give fuck all about.
