Should have started this earlier, but just haven't had the chance to get over here. Same rules as last year, pick the winner of each game. Tie-breaker is total points of the Monday night game.
Kick-off is this Thursday, so we may want to blow off the first week if not everybody gets in early enough, but what the hell...
Good luck, and may the best rufus win!

Since I haven't even looked at this weeks schedule yet, I'll just post my winner for Thursday's kick off between the Jets and Washington...
Nobody.
Well, ok. Washington, but only because somebody's got to win...
I mean, they've got half of last years Jets players anyways, right?
Of course, they also have Steve Spurrier. Hmmmmmmmm...
Sundays aren't as easy as Saturdays, are they Steve?

Has anyone seen the commercial promoting this game? It has Laveranues Coles saying how much he looks forward to seeing his old Jets teammates, while the Jets are saying "years from now, they'll still be picking pieces of him from the turf." Funny stuff.

I seriously doubt the Jets can score 33 points against Washington. Such an output would require Herculean efforts by Vinny Testaverde.
It's a close one, but I'll take the Redskins 21-17, because it is in Washington, and Steve Spurrier, in his decade and a half as a head coach, has lost only 1 season opener.

I'm absolutely awful at picking games, but I'll try anyway.
My pick for tonight is the Jets.

Did you hate him the second half of last year when he made the Jets an offensive powerhouse?

He made one really bad call(the draw play on 3rd down that forced them to punt the last time). Chad Pennington would have audibled when he saw the Redskins were showing blitz(it was ridiculously obvious).

hackett plays too conservative with vinny. they were making run plays when they should have passed, and when they did pass, it was typically a screen or something similarly small.
not just once or twice, but mostly the whole game (and specifically the second half).
i have a feeling on their last drive vinny called that time out because he couldn't believe the play call, but went along with it anyway.

Very possible.
The Jets offense is always about short passes and draw plays, though, even with Chad.

yeah, they do like the lil short gainers ... but they mix it up with the occasional daring play.
vinny used to scare me because he was too daring. he'd throw an 80 yard pass and follow it up with an 80 yard interception.
since hackett took more demanding control (really starting with the first game last season), he's really over-compensated for vinny's dynamics. instead of just taming him a bit, he's laming him a bit.
hopefully, all the criticism they received thus far on last night will make next week a lil easier.

I think the problem is just that Chad and Vinny are too different types of QB's, and Hackett isn't willing to adjust his offense to fit one when the other's out. Hackett's offense works perfectly with Chad, who isn't a particularly strongarmed QB, but a very accurate and very smart one.
The truly great coaches won't make their team adjust to their style of play, they'll adjust their style of play to accentuate their team's strengths.

whether he likes it or not, he's stuck with vinny for about 3 months. he should start to accommodate that.

Sadly, this was probably one of the worst defenses they'll play all year. They play Miami(at home), New England(on the road) and Dallas(at home) their next 3 games, then have a bye. I think they're hoping Chad will be back for week 6 against Buffalo, or maybe week 7 against Houston.

Good guess Franta. You win the white carnation!
Tough week. I always hate the first couple of weeks of the season, cuz I never have any clue as to what's gonna happen...

Yeah, the first couple of weeks I just go with my gut. Once you learn which teams seem to be underachieving and which teams seem to be overachieving, it gets easier.

Last year I correctly predicted that Houston would win week 1. This season I'll try to be a little more insane before the inevitable happens and I lose interest before midpoint of the year:
Indianapolis at Cleveland Denver at Cincinnati Jacksonville at Carolina New England at Buffalo Baltimore at Pittsburgh St. Louis at NY Giants Houston at Miami San Diego at Kansas City Minnesota at Green Bay Arizona at Detroit New Orleans at Seattle Chicago at San Francisco Atlanta at Dallas Oakland at Tennessee

....and this is in Lambau.

Did anybody else see the Joe Jurevicius segment on Sportscenter? Man, that really hit me hard. It made his performance on Monday Night all the more spectacular. I also really like that soundbyte from the conference championship game last year with the commentator yelling "You go Joe! You go Joe!"
Additionally, I've determined that Steve McNair is now the best quarterback in the NFL. That guy is all heart.

Whoops, right you are. Corrected.
Some crazy finishes, wild upsets and bizarre performances this week.
Tampa Bay driving the length of the field and scoring while time expired, only to have the extra point blocked and lose in overtime. San Francisco kicking a squib off a Ram player's helmet, falling on the ball and gaining possession with a chance to win, only to have a receiver fail to stop the clock, sending the game into overtime where they, too, eventually lost. Rich Gannon, the guy who completed 68% of his passes last year and threw for nearly 300 yards a game en route to a Super Bowl appearance, completing only 13 of 28 passes for a miniscule 103 yards....against the Bengals. Jamal Lewis breaking the NFL's single game rushing record. Dez White catching footballs.
....yikes.
