I am deeply saddened by this. Every few months, there is another press release about some wrestler or another dying. It's always sad to lose anyone who people loved, who was good at what they did and entertained people and brought them joy, but a lot of the time, I'm not very familiar with those wrestlers -- they might have hit their prime before I started watching during the "boom" in 1998, or they may never have hit it. It tends to not be a business where people live long and prosper, but rather live out their later years in relative obscurity, their bodies racked with pain from years of hard living and putting it on the line for the sake of telling a story in the squared circle... if they make it that far.

But Eddie Guerrero was different. He was a WWE Superstar of the highest echelon, a consummate performer, a fan favorite, no matter what city or country they traveled to, no matter if he was a face (good guy) or heel (bad guy). He played both parts equally well. He played a convincing psycho over the last year in his bizarre feud with fellow Mexican-American Rey Mysterio, but before that, he was the lovably amoral guy who drove out to the ring in different custom lowriders, whose motto was unabashedly "Lie, Cheat, and Steal." The crowds loved him. He sported a colossal MULLET for years, and they still went crazy for him. He was great at cutting promos, probably in the top five most entertaining interviewees in the WWE, but then when the bell rang, he could walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

Eddie was a big guy, musclebound as all hell, but he was one of the few who could seemingly defy gravity like the much smaller cruiserweight wrestlers. He could fly through the air, taking amazing risks for awe-inspiring "highspot" moves that had everyone on the edge of their seats. He worked well with almost everyone, and was counted on to carry anyone to a good match, which is what pro wrestling is all about. He could "sell," which means making injuries look real, and he could "put over" just about anyone, which means making his opponents look good (usually better than they really were). I can't think of too many other wrestlers who combine technical ability, speed, strength, grace, ring psychology, and mic skills the way he could. Ask any WWE fan, any mark (the fans who think and act like it's REAL), any smark (the fans who read the backstage gossip on the Internet and know about how things really work behind the scenes), and any of them would claim the utmost respect for Eddie Guerrero.

Too many wrestling deaths of the last few years have been drug-related, and that's a horrible shame. Again, much of this has to do with misuse of painkillers and muscle relaxants. I don't know if this was one of them, but Eddie definitely fought his demons over the years, and seemed to have won. He was addicted to HEROIN for a while, disappeared from wrestling, went into rehab, and returned bigger, faster, and better than ever -- probably reaching the greatest heights of his career after that. Now, like too many others before him, he was found dead in a hotel room, and I shudder to think what an autopsy might reveal. I'm not making a judgment, nor is it my place to do so. Instead, I mourn for a champion, a top-notch athlete, a great entertainer, a surprisingly capable comedian, a role model of sorts, a man who made his mark in ECW, WCW, and WWF/WWE and rose to the top of those companies because he was so damn good at what he did. I don't really care how he passed away, only that it was such a damn shame he went so young, and alone, and with so much of a great career still ahead of him.

For anyone who is remotely interested, the WWE released a DVD career retrospective a couple years back. Their DVDs are the BEST -- even if you're not a wrestling fan (and I assume most RKMB members aren't), the editing is top-notch, the commentaries are fascinating, and the matches they put together from decades of footage are awe-inspiring. They show you exactly why these men earn their reputations as stars and warriors and heroes and champions, and the Eddie Guerrero DVD set, ironically called "Cheating Death, Stealing Life," is one of the best out there.

I don't know what to say.

I am at a complete loss.

Cheat to win, Uncle Eddie.

I hope God gives him his wallet back.

An amazing performer still in his prime. This is a huge loss. I hope there is an investigation.

WWE wrestler found dead in Minneapolis hotel room

World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his Minneapolis hotel room this morning, according to the WWE.

Guerrero, who was born in 1967, was at the Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis and in town for Sunday night's "WWE Supershow" at Target Center.

Authorities have not released details about the nature of his death.

Guerrero became WWE champion in February 2004, when he defeated Brock Lesnar, a former University of Minnesota wrestling standout. Guerrero lost the title four months later.

Guerrero was featured on the UPN series "WWE Smackdown!" and was the son of Mexican wrestler Gory Guerrero, according to WCCO. He is survived by his wife Vickie and daughters Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.

In May 2004, UPN aired the special "Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story." The one-hour program chronicled his childhood and his struggle with drug addiction that almost cost him his job, family and life before his recovery and eventual capture of the WWE championship.

Guerrero was born into Mexico's first family of professional wrestling, and his father, Gory Guerrero, and grew up in El Paso, Texas. Eddie and his three older brothers were all wrestlers.

His drug escapades as an adult included while on liquid ecstasy flipping his car going 130 miles per hour. Doctors told the family that it was unlikely he would survive. From there, he went numerous binges abusing cocaine, alcohol and pain killers. He was fired by the WWE, his wife filed for divorce, and the IRS seized his wages.

After recovery, he remarried his wife, reclaimed his job and became the second wrestler of Hispanic heritage to be WWE champion.

While a cause of death for Guerrero wasn't immediately known, the pro wrestling profession has seen numerous premature deaths in recent years, some tied directly to steroid use.

In a March 2004 report, USA Today said that since 1997, at least 65 wrestlers died in that time, 25 from heart attacks or other coronary problems. Many had enlarged hearts. In five of the 25 deaths, medical examiners found that steroids might have played a role. Excessive steroid use can lead to an enlarged heart. In 12 others, coroners cited evidence of use of painkillers, cocaine and other drugs.

Steroids played a role in the deaths of several pro wrestlers since 1997, USA Today reported, citing medical examiners, family members and the wrestlers themselves. Among them:

Curt Hennig, 44, died of acute cocaine intoxication in 2003. His father said a lethal combination of steroids and painkillers contributed to his death.

(The British Bulldog) Davey Boy Smith, 39,died in 2002 of an enlarged heart with evidence of microscopic scar tissue, possibly from steroid abuse, a coroner said.

Louie (Spicolli) Mucciolo, 27, died from coronary disease in 1998. Investigators found an empty vial of the male hormone testosterone, pain pills and an anxiety-reducing drug.

Richard (Ravishing Rick Rude) Rood, 40, died from an overdose of "mixed medications" in 1999.

(Flyin') Brian Pillman, 35, was taking painkillers and human-growth hormone when he died from heart disease in 1997, his widow said.

I barely have time to stop by here anymore, but when a co worker called me and told me the news I had a feeling there would already be a thread started by someone else. Honestly, this is my first time grieving for the loss of an active wrestler since I had been an active viewer (the last 2-3 years). At least we can take some comfort in knowing he cheated to win against Mr. Kennedy this last Friday on Smackdown.

He was my fave wrestler. Why hasn't Viscera died yet?

I was at the IPW show today when they announced that Eddie was gone!
The wrestlers & the audience performed a 1 minute silence in his honour,and most of the wrestlers wore black armbands as a show of respect!

To say the crowd was shocked,would be putting it mildly.

Eddie chants echoed through the hall several times during the night,as some wrestlers did signature Eddie Guerrero moves,to show that he is gone but not forgotten.

Most poignant moment of the night though went to a guy who called Eddie "friend".

Vampiro came out early in the night,dressed in his street clothes,minus his trademark makeup,and told a story of how he,Eddie & various other wrestlers came up together.
He told how they shared a house & how Eddie was his mentor.
He said that all he was interested in was getting famous & didnt want to train,but Eddie kicked his arse & had many arguments with him,which all ended up with him having a 21 year career,and having the degree of fame & success he has had up to these days!

It was emotional,but as Eddie would surely have said,the show must always go on!

My deepest sympathies go out to his wife,his children,Chavo Sr & Jr,plus anyone else who loved him!

Tonight theres a little less heat in this world as the Latino flame has gone out!

got an IM this morning from my coworker, the inside pulse guy. just very shocking news.

i heard it again, this evening, on cbs news radio, which was admittedly a bit surprising to me, due to wrestling's less-than-astounding mainstream reputation. but the report was very respectful, very serious, and actually lasted a good minute or so (this is one of those 20-second blurb news shows)

is eddie the only guy, outside of owen, who died while an active wrestler of a big name fed?

i was much more a fan of his during his skinnier, mulletier, wcwier days, as i rarely watch smackdown, if ever. always very entertaining. and the little bits i did see of him, as his character finally gained prominance, importance, and a belt, it really seems like he was a happy guy, who simply finally got his chance to shine.

the latter news report said taht they were still investigating, but the event showed no foul play, and no apaprent suicide. eddie has been supposedly clean for 4-5 years, but im not sure if "wwf clean" includes steroids or not.

whatever the case, its definitely a huge loss.

I lied about it, too. and cheated by giving them less money for it.

This is tragic. He did a lot of work for us.

There just aren't words to describe how I feel. I'd hope tomorrow night's RAW is a tribute show, like they did with Owen and 9/11. Y'know, people can talk if they want, kayfabe is dropped, and people wrestle if they want to.

Raw/Smackdown spoilers from Eddy Guerrero tribute show in Minneapolis

I just got back from the supershow at the Target Center. Here are the results:

-Eddie's low rider was in its usual starting position as a tribute.

-Lilian Garcia came out and told us tonight was a "special tribute" show. She introduced the first match.

-Mr. Kennedy def. Val Venis in a dark match. Mr. Kennedy was announced from Green Bay and got all of his heat from Vikings fans chanting "Packers Suck". Kennedy won with that cool top-rope maneuver.

All of the superstars from RAW and SMACKDOWN walked out from under the Titantron. Close-ups were shown of a crying Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle and other superstars before the Titantron turned black. Vince McMahon took the microphone and said words about Eddie before concluding with "VIVA LA RAZA!"

Several interviews with superstars were dispersed throughout the show, all saying how much Eddie loved his family and the wrestling business. They were all very touching and genuine.

The announcers weren't introduced and there were no pyros, so it was confusing as to what was and wasn't on television, but here are the results of the RAW taping:

-Kane & Big Show def. MNM with a double chokeslam on Nitro. Big Show kissed Melina and she fell off the apron. Melina didn't do her ring entrance because of her back injury.

-Kurt Angle def. Shelton Benjamin with the ankle lock. Shelton got a big pop being a former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher. Shelton performed a very scary overhead suplex from the top rope on Kurt during the match that prompted the only "Holy Sh*t" chant of the night.

-Rey Misterio def. Shawn Michaels in an excellent match. Rey went for the 619 multiple times, with Shawn finding ways to dodge it (I wanted it to be the 612 for Minneapolis). In the end, Rey won with a huracanrana into a roll-up. The two men hugged after the match.

-Melina won a Divas Battle Royal over Ashley Massaro, Candice Michelle, Jillian Hall, Maria, Christy Hemme, Victoria, Mickie James and the Women's Champion Trish. Like all the other wrestlers, the divas wore Eddie Guererro "Who's Your Papi?" T-shirts, but took them off and threw them in the audience once they were all in the ring. Mickie was eliminated first (who'd she piss off?). Some botched moves here as Victoria and Candice attempted to slingshot Ashley out of the ring, but she didn't go over and they had to move her legs for her. Maria stood there for the most of the match before eliminating Jillian. They also did a Maven/Undertaker spot where Maria shocked the crowd by eliminating Victoria. Maria, Trish and Melina were the final two, and Melina and Trish quickly double-teamed Ma! ria to eliminate her, but while Trish was on the apron Melina shoved her off. This was a very surprising finish.

-Eugene def. Simon Dean

-In the RAW main event, John Cena def. Randy Orton by disqualification after Bob Orton interfered. John hit Randy with an RKO after the match, then took off his Eddie shirt and placed the World Championship on it.

SMACKDOWN results:

-Batista came out driving Eddie's low-rider and did a very emotional promo. He had trouble maintaining his composure at times, but did a very good job.

-Matt Hardy def. Carlito Caribbean Cool with the Twist of Fate. Crowd was quiet for most of it, partly because of the emotion and because the show had reached the two-hour mark.

-Road Warrior Animal & Heidenreich def. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch.

-Chavo Guererro came out to a great ovation and defeated JBL (w/Jillian Hall). Chavo threw a chair in the ring, threw it in JBL's hands, and then pretended to have been hit with it. When the referee threw the chair back, Chavo low-blowed JBL and won with a Three Amigos/Frog Splash combo. Chavo thanked the fans after the match.

-Chris Benoit def. HHH in the main event with an inside cradle as HHH was fighting out of the Crippler Crossface. They embraced after the match, and as HHH walked to the back, Dean Malenko came out and got in the ring with Chris. The men took a sign for Eddie from a fan and placed it in the center of the ring before walking out.

It was a very emotional, well-produced show and WWE did a good job of putting together a show so great in a very short amount of time and very dire circumstances.

A report is circulating that whatever happened,it was sudden as Eddie was found with a toothbrush still in his mouth.
A heart attack is being touted as the most likely cause.

At the moment,this rumour is totally unsubstantiated.

Some jagoff decided it would be 'cute' to edit Eddie's wikipedia entry to say that it was a penis still in his mouth. AFAIK, it has been correctly changed back to toothbrush.

I've been laid up in bed for the last week or so with the flu, so I haven't been able to post in a while, but I really am saddened by this and wish his family members my deepest sympathies. This is a great loss, not only to WWE and wrestling fans, but the world of wrestling in general.

This is exactly the way we lost Brian Pillman. After Eddie's car accident, he became addicted to painkillers, and those years of abuse, even though he was able to overcome his addiction, finally caught up to him I guess, just like Brian Pillman.

All of WWE was deeply saddened by the news that Eddie Guerrero passed away Sunday morning in Minneapolis. Everyone who knew Eddie has been deeply affected by his untimely passing. RAW and SmackDown Superstars will have the chance to express their thoughts on the former WWE Champion on both RAW and SmackDown this week. Chris Jericho also wanted to express his feelings and thoughts on his long-time friend. In addition, Jericho has provided this special photo (left) from his personal album. The photo is very meaningful to Jericho, as it depicts him and his three closest friends backstage. WWE.com caught up with Jericho who fondly remembered a friend that he has traveled with through Mexico, Japan, ECW, WCW and of course WWE.

WWE.com: When did you hear about Eddie Guerrero’s passing?

Chris Jericho: I heard about it yesterday at around noon. Shane McMahon called me and told me. I am devastated by the news of Eddie's passing.

WWE.com: What did Eddie mean to you personally?

Chris Jericho: Eddie was one of my best friends in the wrestling business. I’ve known him for 12 years since we met in Mexico City. We’ve been through so much over the years. I hadn’t seen him too much over the last couple of years because we were on different shows. Then, the night before SummerSlam, my flight got delayed. So, instead of flying to wherever we were going, we just stayed overnight at the airport in Tampa. It was my wife and I, and Eddie and his wife happened to be there too, and we talked them into staying over as well. That was probably the last time I had the chance to have a good conversation with him. We had the kind of relationship where all you had to do was talk for about five minutes and you’d be back to where you were the last time you talked to him. We’ve been through a lot of great things together and had a lot of fun together and learned a lot from each other.

WWE.com: You said that Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko were your three best friends in wrestling. What does that picture (above) of the four of you mean to you?

Chris Jericho: There’s a picture of us like that one with Brian Hildebrand the night of that Memorial. When we were in WCW they would call us the New Japan 4 because all four of use came in around the same time, and we all had about the same basic impact. We all came in the same way. We came through new Japan, through ECW. Chris and I came through Calgary and Eddie and Dean came through Florida. We had a lot of respect for each other and we were like kindred spirits. The four of us used to travel together. It was funny because Chris and Eddie would always watch what they eat, and me and Dean were like the fatsos that would look at the back of a cookie box and just laugh. Eddie and Chris eventually split off a little bit because they would want to train at 7:00 in the morning, and me and Dean would wait until 2:00 in the afternoon. But the four of us would always travel together and follow each other. We all respected each other. To get that picture at SummerSlam, eight years after we had the one with Brian, is really special. My wife actually reminded me I had that picture, and I’m so glad we took that picture. Looking at it makes me feel a little better about what happened. I’m not worried for Eddie because he was a man of God and I know he’s in Heaven. I just feel really bad for his family, and I selfishly feel bad for myself. I love Eddie, he was my brother on the road. Even though we didn’t talk too much over the last couple of years, you can’t replace those experiences we had back in Mexico, through Japan and ECW, through WCW which was a hellhole for us at the time – to go through all of that together is special. To eat dinner in each other’s homes and have our wives know each other – it’s just really sad. Of all the guys who have passed on over the years, and it seems like there’s been a hundred by now, this one hurts the most because this was one of the brothers. Anyone will tell you that you can probably count the guys you trust on one hand, and now I have four fingers left on that hand. Eddie was almost a mentor to me in a lot of ways, and I was a mentor to him in a lot of ways too. It just hurts. It really, really hurts.

WWE.com: You and Eddie have had several matches together over the years. Are there any that stand out to you in particular?

Chris Jericho: We didn’t work together too much in WWE because we usually weren’t on the same show. I think my favorite match I had with him was at Fall Brawl ’97 in WCW. We had a great match there. He was as talented as they come and a true class act. Another one we had that was never on TV was myself and Eddie versus Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit in Knoxville, TN, which was a benefit show for Brian Hildebrand (Mark Curtis) who was a referee for WCW. He was a friend of all four of ours and he had cancer, so we had a benefit to help pay for his bills. It was a great night. It was an appreciation night for him. They put us in the main event, which never happened back in those days. It used to always be guys like Lex Luger and Sting, but they knew we were Brian’s friends. It was just a great match. Eddie and I actually had great chemistry as a tag team. We used to laugh that we were the best tag team that really never was. They used to throw us together from time to time in WCW and we would always tear the house down. We used to call ourselves Eh and Buey because buey is a Mexican term and of course Eh because I’m from Canada. Another name we called ourselves was North and South of the Border. He was just one of those guys that could work with anyone. If you had any kind of chemistry at all, you could have a great match with him.

WWE.com: What will you remember most about Eddie?

Chris Jericho: Just how humble he was. He had two sides to him. He was very serious, but he had a really funny sense of humor. He was a really fun guy to be around when he was in that type of mood. And anyone who knows him knows about “The Cricket.” I’m not going to explain it, but those who know, know. And those who don’t, wish they knew about “The Cricket.” That was probably about the funniest thing you could say about Eddie. He was just a really cool guy. He had a real strong faith and belief in God, too. He was never afraid to talk about it, but he would never push it on anyone. He was a true family man and most importantly a warrior for God. He taught me so much about wrestling and about being a man and it is an honor to call him a true brother and friend.

WWE.com: What do you think it meant to Eddie when he finally won that WWE Championship?

Chris Jericho: Eddie felt about it, the same way I felt when I won it, because we talked about it. It’s kind of like wining an Oscar. It’s like getting a pat on the back for years of hard work. We laughed because Chris Benoit, Eddie and myself were basically kicked out of WCW for not being big enough or World Championship material and then less than five years later all three of us were champions in the biggest wrestling company in the history of the world. It was vindication for us. We always knew we could do it and had the confidence. I remember Eddie told me that his dad always said that it says wrestling on the marquee, and if you’re a wrestler you’ll always have a job and it always comes back to wrestling. And he’s right. No matter how much BS there is, and how it’s sports-entertainment, the bottom line is, it comes back to wrestling. And if you can wrestle, you’ll always rise to the top, and Eddie proved that.

I'm not ashamed to admit that reading Y2J's rememberance of Eddie brought tears to my eyes.

I still have a hard time believing this happened. A part of me hopes it's some tasteless angle, and Eddie will pop out from under the ring at the next PPV, having faked his death to put one over on JBL or something.

Even my mom the non-wrestling fan didn't believe it when she saw a blurb on Headline News. I heard her say in true Faarooq fashion "DAMN."

So does this mean that Rey Rey has complete custody of Dominick now?
