Kurt Angle wins the World Heavyweight Championship
wwe.com

Kurt Angle won the World Heavyweight Championship Tuesday night at the SmackDown television taping in Philadelphia.

In one of the most shocking moments in recent SmackDown history, RAW's Angle walked out from the locker room area and into the SmackDown ring to compete in the Battle Royal ordered by General Manager Theodore Long.

The addition of Angle to the Battle Royal clearly caught many Superstars off guard, and he became an immediate target of the SmackDown roster. In fact, Mark Henry even slammed Angle through the announce table at ringside. Angle was able to withstand the attack, however, and in the end Angle last eliminated Henry to be crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Afterwards, Angle celebrated in the ring while the audience in Philadelphia looked on in total amazement.

Of course, the crowning of a new World Heavyweight Champion was ordered after an injured and emotional Batista was forced to surrender the title earlier in the night due to injury.

Be sure to watch SmackDown this Friday night on UPN to watch this truly historic event unfold.

odd.

i mean... for many reasons.

one, of course, is that our good pal kury isn't on smackdown anymore. in fact, he just wrestled on this week's raw, and is already scheduled for a match on next week's raw.

secondly, they flat out give this away on wwe.com. its not even buried in a "spoiler" area -- the main homepage graphic is angle with the belt.

They are just trying to keep ahead of the internet news sites!

As for why Angle,I'd say its because SD has a severely depleted roster!
Also,it might just be a way of going back to the undisputed title!

The most likely reason is cause Kury Angle is God!
Its true!

Angle becoming champion shows the lack of faith the WWE has with Smackdown. Their top wrestlers are falling injured and they feel no other wrestler can carry the title and substain lackluster ratings. The only one (Chris Benoit) is currently involved in a storyline, otherwise he would've been the logical choice

Smackdown really just didn't have enough people.

Christian jumped to TNA.
Eddie Guerrero (who was originally supposed to win the belt) passed.
JBL and Orton haven't caught on.
Undertaker only seems to wrestle every few months or so. He doesn't maintain the schedule needed of a champion right now.

Angle is a logical choice, given the events of New Year's Revolution. With a newly crowned heel champion on Raw, there wouldn't be too much room left for Angle. But the lack of talent on SD right now gives him plenty of room to step in and keep things going. A rare smart move by WWE.

There is though, one other person that an argument could be made for: Rey Mysterio. While small by WWE standards he's got the talent and charisma to carry the championship. It wouldn't hurt SD to experiment by putting the strap on Rey for a while. That'd be nice.

Just watched Smackdown & I gotta say that Batista has proved to me why I have started to respect the man!
He relinquished the title with a speech that was so obviously heart felt, and pretty much unscripted.
His love for this business & the fans is quite obviously genuine, and shows that he had become a worthy champion!

Oh & the ending to the best of seven series was pure bullshit!
Not the result, just the way it happened!

I beat Mark Henry one on one in 2002. He wasn't the world's strongest man until the son of a bitch did the horizontal macarena with Mae Young! Oh it's true!

That was horrific, but no more so than the Katie Vick debacle.

Ok,now this isnt a rumour, and its not very likely, but heres one possible angle that WWE could go with if they had any sense!

Ok,the World title that Angle has just won,was originally the heavyweight belt for RAW until the recent(ish) lottery draft,so its entirely possible that WWE might want the titles back on their original shows.
Lets imagine that WWE were willing to leave Smackdown without a heavyweight title til WrestleMania, this is what they could do!

Have both Angle & Edge stay as champions on RAW,then have Matt Hardy win the Royal Rumble.
Now as both titles are both on RAW,he would be able to challenge for either without having to change shows like Benoit did.
Of course Hardy is gonna challenge Edge, the guy wearing the WWE title which was originally Smackdowns title,go to WrestleMania & win the title, bringing it back to Smackdown!

This would be a great angle, but of course thats the main reason it would never happen!

Maybe if we all pray REALLY hard, God will answer our prayers and put Version One-ah in the main event.

just watched my tape of last week's smackdown.

great show!!

i mean... ok... i guess many wrestling shows would be great if you could hold down the fast forward button for 75% of the taping, but... still, it was good stuff.

the batista bit at the beginning was fantastic. the orton vs benoit match, with booker at the side was pretty cool, at least in premise. the actual match wasn't too great, but... i'm ok with it. the royal rumble set up was decent, but the pop for angle was really, really fun.

on the one hand, i'm sorry wwe ruined the surprise. ...but on the other, i'm glad they did, cuz i sure as fuck wouldn't have watched otherwise. and, according to the early ratings reports, it was by far the right move on their part.

the rumble itself wasn't all that spectacular, but it did tell a good story.

teasin rey's spot for the entire night was cool, and seeing him almost get to realize that dream was fun. i know everyone hates mark henry, and sure, he is a fat tard, but i thought he played a decent "unstoppable force" -- at least as far as this match went.

more than anything, tho, i loved how the fans loved rey rey, making them boo even louder when thinking henry won the belt. ... only to see kury rise from the ashes (curry ashes?) and build support to a character many smackdown fans would have otherwise boo'd (or, at least, with the rivalry, were sorta 'spose to)

and all leading to a huge payoff at the end, with angle taking the belt.

great show.

better than any raw in recent memory, thats for damn sure.
