 gail simone kicks ass. i mean, really, she kicks ass. she's taken characters that i, frankly, couldn't give two shits for (or, perhaps, its worse if i could give two shits for...) and turned an essentially worthless, pass-over book into just a damn good, top notch, must read. benes and a few other talented artists are certainly due their much deserved credit, and i'll heartily admit, it was benes' pencils that got me to actually give the book a chance. but, holy fuck, simone tells some great tales. she writes a great barbara, black canary, huntress, shiva, batman, james gordon, blue beetle... all inside this teeny tiny, oft unnoticed title. well, fucking notice it. cuz, while its still here, some of comics greatest combatitive, and particularly non combatitive, moments are taking place. its not mind wiping. its not mutant killing. its not time altering juggernauts from not-too-distant planets. its just damn good comics. in this latest issue, #89, not only do we see an amazing calculator vs oracle tease, not only do we get a turning point moment from a newly-turned-himself hero, not only do we see the startings of a battle royale featuring fan fav deathstroke, not only do we hear more about barbara's progression from paralysis, not only do we see a squaring off between batman and his uneasy allies... but we get one of comicdom's most amazing moments with babs' secret ID unveiling to her father. its not teased on the cover. its not the book's 2-page-spread conclusive finale. its just a great part of a great story, and fully delves into many other amazing comic book possibilities, not the least of which is the oft-wondered "does jim gordon know bruce wayne is batman?" question. check this book the fuck out. related RKMBs articles:

Hard to write though. Blind characters are easier to do in a visual medium. You generally need word balloons in comics.

yeah, i actually debated as to whether or not to place the image here.
... but then, i figured, unless you're one of the 4,500 people buying this book, it wont matter. y'give away some surprises to "put people in the seats"
this moment wasn't teased in the previous issue, or previous 20 issues. it wasn't foreshadowed on the cover. there was <i>no</i> indication that something like this would happen. it wasn't even the issue's big "pay off" finale. it was just a moment that would have, otherwise, been entirely passed over.
but stuff like this happens, and happens well, in birds of prey all the time lately.
whether its the final few days of blue beetle, or babs regaining some of her mobility, or the commish learning of his daughters' heroic double life -- and subsequently, possibly batman's.... its all just part of this book. this tiny little back corner, bottom shelf book, that never makes a buzz, never gets attention, and dwindles in sales charts.
so, i was doin my little part by giving it some attention.
perhaps franta claus can deliver the issue to all of his many, beloved children, now that he is aware that it could actually be a kick ass book.

in current "possibly about to get fucked up" continuity, jim never revealed knowing that babs was either oracle or batgirl. and, as far as babs knew, her father knew nothing of either, and she wasn't about to reveal the info.

it has always been speculated that jim, a seasoned cop and brilliant detective would, and should, have been able to "crack the code" long ago for both batgirl and batman. there are "plausible deniability" moments discussed and seen between batman and gordon in miller's year one, the contagion saga, and no man's land, to name a few. however, none have conclusively shown who knows what.
