Is this the one about the kids whose parents are supervillains?

I remember readng the first half-dozen issues. I thought it was OK enough, but it seemed aimed at younger readers. Not really my thing.

Didn't you find the constant stream of pop references a tad annoying?

I don't know. Those die out soon enough, I think.

Vaughn is pretty clever. I just finished reading the first volume ("seasons", they call em now) and he sets up everything perfectly for the climax in issue 17. I had previously read an issue of the second volume (the one that made me look up the rest), so I already knew most of the twists, but that didn't take away anything from the experience.

I'd even compare the pre-planning and set up to the one Morrie did in Animalman, if it wasn't much more daring to that in the 80's.

I'm a big BKV fan, but Runaways isn't his best stuff...

Still better than his short run on Ultimate X-Men though...

Y the Last Man and Ex Machina are two of the best books on the stand right now. Wish The Escapist would start up again though...

I've read some of both Y the Last Man and Runaways. Y is much better but Runaways is still pretty good.

That's all I have to add.

I can't even compare it to Ex Machina, because the styles are so different. Runaways is as much of an author comic as EM, in my opinion. It's rare to find a mature writer who actually likes superhero stuff (look at Azzarello).

I haven't began Y yet, but I plan to start as soon as I finish Runaways.

Well I just read the first 18 in a row so that makes me better than you.

I loved it. There's only been a couple comics that have gotten me this excited over the last couple years. Ultimate Spider-man, The Ultimates and now Runaways.

The pop culture references didn't bother me, hell I even liked some of them. Animalman was just being a pro. The person who ended up being the traitor was the last person I expected because he was my favorite. I loved the humor. Actually I loved all of it.

Is this series still around or has it been cancelled or has it been turned into the normal marvel faggotry?

The first 20 or so issues of the second volume were also written by Vaughn, and they're almost as great as the first series (meaning really fucking good).

Then Whedon took over for an arc and, as much as it pains me to say this, it kinda sucked. The first issues were okay, but then it turned into an orgy of predictability and annoying throaway characters ("just like Buffy!" I miss Pro \:\( ). The strange part was that Vaughn was doing his best impression of Whedon when he was writing the comic (he's admitted as much), but the man himself wasn't up to it. The second series ended with Whedon's arc.

The third volume started a few months ago, by Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise) and Humberto Ramos. Looks promising.
