Okay, I got an idea after musing how much it costs to make a film nowadays.

Get a selection - say, four or five - of the big name directors, used to working with massive budgets and sets (Spielberg, Cameron, Lucas, et al)

Give them five million each to create a film (production, pre- and post-) The TV studio creates a fly-on-the-wall of each director making their individual films.

Their films are released and distributed normally. The TV show gets a slice of the box office. The winner is decided on box office and critical acclaim.

Thoughts?

How about this: Give an indy director 100 million to make an artsy film and see if he doesn't sell out by casting big names and adding a giant robotic spider to the plot.

The one that makes less money in the box office wins.

What, exactly, would be the incentive for anyone with as much money as those guys to do this?

Five million to any one of these guys is probably pocket change. Given that fiscal reality why would they want a camera crew following them around while they each made a low budget movie, risking their reputations?

Basically, all you're proposing is a remake of HBO's Project Greenlight, but with people who don't need to waste their time working for a reality show.

It's funny to hear Kevin Smith's take on it.

One could hope the art itself would be inspirtation. Big budgets are nice and all...but if modern cinema has taught us nothing else, it's that too many projects hide behind their special effects and deliver little to no substance. How many times have you enjoyed a movie and then realized what complete shit it actually was when trying to re-watch it on DVD?

But if any of those guys wanted to make a small movie for $5 million they could, and would, do so. Each of them could afford to do so out of their own pockets. There would be no incentive to add the distraction of a reality TV show camera crew following them around.

As a fan of the TV show, I heartily agree with this statement. And why couldn't the villain have been an evil mad scientist midget, the way God intended?!?

I think Mel Brooks should have sued the producers of Wild Wild West for ripping him off.
