Read New World Order. Its quite good. A little predictable in places (the Martians, Manhunter's disguise) but the takedown of the Martians by Bats was excellent, and I now see why everyone made such a fuss over "Only if he's prepared."

Morrie was keen to cast Bats as quite different from his peers. Ostensibly powerless and outclassed by his super-powered opponents, Morrie has Superman describe him as the most dangerous man on the planet simply because he outsmarts the bad guys. And in writing it, morrie had to demonstrate that the outsmarting was believable - there ws no deux ex machina good luck involved. Bats just worked the bad guys out and punished them for their mistake in revealing their weakness.

Its interesting to see how a Machiavelian take on a crimefighter can work so well.

the morrison JLA run is tremendous, david. it can get a little "what the fuck just happened" at times, but for the most part, its fantastic.

his batman is amongst the greatest of all batmans, and the 40 or so books in his run will show it. its really the first and only time batman belonged in the JLA. every other writer makes him the "go out and find clues" kinda guy, but morrison properly placed him amongst the iconic god set of superman and wonder woman, and with a non-forced feeling. it was good shit.

but there's really an excellent characterization amongst all of the 7 stars, and then later, in the larger groups. its really the only instance i've found several characters truly appealing (kyle, flash, aquaman, steel, etc). the dynamic he has them in, the drive he shows in each of them... its really great work.

Hmm, well I'd read the excellent Earth 2 and more recently Ultramarine Corps, but I wasn't sure what to expect on something mainstream.

Art is a bit iffy, though.

Well... yeah, but also some writers lapse into that as formula. So it's also a joke.

if you liked that first arc, you're set through most of the rest.

and porter's art isn't the greatest, ill agree, but it really improves through out the run.

Morrison's JLA was the first DC comic I'd read since I'd bought a few issues of New Titans as a kid and they really won me over. They're probably the real reason Kyle will always be "my" Green Lantern. His interplay with the Flash was probably my favorite part of it. I never really thought I could like DC's characters as much as Marvel's before that, but Morrison really managed to win me over.

Yeah, compare Morrison's JLA to the current JLA and wonder what DC editorial is smoking these days.

since morrison left JLA, the book drifted back to almost like a silver age lull. stories were pretty lame, art was pretty (very) lame, they brought in a few new characters, spread everyone around... there just really isn't much to it, with very few exceptions in the run (i'd ignore most any writing for s'more bryan hitch jla art, though)

the new, new jla title with the new count, i actually really liked. granted, i'm probably about 6 issues, if not more, behind (i think i'm on... 8?) but i've enjoyed it. really great art (benes is/was the best thing to hit jla since morrison) cool characterization, interested vantages and pairings and perspectives. it doesn't really provide the "oh, shit!!" momments that the 90s run did, but... its almost an unfair comparison, with the earlier run being amongst the all time best.

Well, that's not entirely fair. Waid's run after Morrison had some GREAT stories, and, for what it's worth, I thought Joe Kelly's run had more hits than misses. Once Claremont and Byrne did their story, THAT's when things started going downhill. And who do they get to follow that story? Chuck Austen.

The only Waid book I read was the one where Talia accesses Batman's takedown plans for the other JLA. Thoroughly disappointing.

The current JLA book is lukewarm entertaining, in sort of an Avengers kind of way. I've read the first tpb. The Justice League used to split into teams to fight threats. It was a signature of the book. The Avengers charge en masse. This is more Avengers than JLA. That's not really a complaint so much as an observation.

But much more disppointing has been the hack elements. Solomon Grundy ripping off Tornado's human arm like a chicken wing was pure schlock. Big deal. No lasting effects and, yahoo, we get to see gore. Its not like Red Tornado now has one arm, is it? And all the cheesy legacy stuff.... if I wanted that I'd read JSA. The second arc with the Legion of Doom shows more promise.

As I said in another thread I would have been more impressed if Red Tornado had been permanently killed off, and Amazo replaced him on the team with Tornado's memories implanted in him permanently. Having a benign Amazo on the team would be like Rogue in X-men - a vehicle for interesting use of powers.

And it would be a nice shout out to Rock of Ages, where a future Amazo was one of the last remaining Leaguers on Darkseid's Earth.

Morison's JLA is amazing. Rob's, right that it can get a tad bit out there, but he did an excellent job of selling even the most unbelievable stuff. He also kept up well with continuity of the rest of the DC verse. It was early JLA that solidified Kyle as opposed to Hal as the most relatable Lantern to me. You should try and get all the trades.

I've read some of the earlier story-arcs. Good stuff.

"Batman is only meaningful as an answer to a world which in its basics is chaotic and in the hands of the wrong people, where no justice can be found. I think it's very suitable to our perception of the world's condition today... Batman embodies the will to resist evil" -Frank Miller

Really? I thought Tower of Babel was a great storyline. It set the stage for Batman being (once again) ostracized and demonstrated how - powers of no - he is dangerous and should never be underestimated. I enjoyed it.

It had too many plot holes. And it was too contrived. Once the shock of kowing who was actually responsible for formulating the plans was over, thee was nothng left to the story.
