I got comics for the last two weeks yesterday, so some of these might be a week old:

Y The Last Man #12: Another excellent installment; capping up a tremendous first year for the series. It remains my favorite monthly title on the market.

The Crossovers #6: It looks pretty stupid from the covers, but The Crossovers is actually a very funny and charming book, and it plays on the cliches and archetypes that comic books possess.

Trinity #1: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Matt Wagner. Yipee!

The Filth #11: Sort of the culmination of Grant Morrison's work over the past decade(Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Flex Mentallo, Invisibles). He brings all these elements together. Good read, if you're into the wacky drug-induced antics of ol' Morrie.

Kingpin #1: An interesting take on Kingpin as a young man, in his rise to power. Some of the "street" dialogue is a bit off(I guess it's not Bruce Jones' forte), but overall I enjoyed the first issue. It definitely shows just how ruthless the Kingpin is.

Didn't pick it up yet. Looks good, though, so I'll make a point of catching it.

One thing I really should look into is more manga stuff. My purchases from the Big 2 have been fewer and fewer lately.

Trinity #1...looks good haven't read it

Thundercats: The Return #5..Again, Ed Benes..the boy gets around...I liked it to, but I'm pretty easy...

Haven't been to the racks this week, but:
  • Y: The Last Man: Gotta pick it up. Been a great read so far.
  • Trinity: Heard nothing but good things about this one. Good things.
  • Outsiders: Don't know how I feel about this one, but I'll give Winnick a chance.
  • Thundercats: A definite for me, but I'm a child of the 80's...
  • JLA: Scary Monsters: I was pleasantly surprised as well by Claremont on this one. His stuff has been off, but he seems to have gone the extra mile to get a handle on the JLA heroes.
  • The Rest: I'll probably cheat and give 'em a good scan in the comic book store, then pick 'em up if I've got the mula.

I thought it was pretty good. I'd recommend it, especially if you're a Martian Manhunter fan.

Probably Spoilers in here, so take care....

Birds of Prey #56 was pretty darn good. benes is... well, he's getting a lot better. He still relies a little too much on cheesecake and he gave Dinah a really wierd elongated body in a lot of panels but he's a good visual storyteller and he's got a really nice way of showing facial expressions. The story is a slow start I think and Gail over at the DC boards has said that she likes to write stories where things aren't quite what they seem so I'm pretty intrigued as to where she's taking it. And really nice banter between the girls too.

Outsiders #1. I wasn't going to pick this up after the mess that was Graduation Day but the art is so pretty that I thought I'd give it a go. And while I wasn't blown away I'll almost certainly get the next issue as well. It's mostly set up and the reasoning behind the make-up of the group is pretty OK (my initial thought was it didn't make sense for the Titans to disband and then two of their main members to rejoin another group but that's dealt with). Two problems though were the seemingly arbitary ways that Metamorpho and Indigo came back. OK so the Metamorpho ressurection is a mess anyway (fine for heros to come back from the dead but at least usually there's a reason for it) but there's also the big thing about him not remembering much. We've been there before in JLE and he was in BoP a couple of months back looking perfectly normal and happy. And they reprogrammed Indigo? Does that mean we're not going to get any explanation of why she came into the past then? Hmmm. And why was she coloured so differently from on the cover?

Lucifer #39. Oh. My. Gods. Mike Carey is a bastard. I just hope that the last page isn't really all it seems. Spera and Gordium as little balls of glowing light is pretty damn good though. Especially when you compare the way the two of them are speaking. [biiiig grin] I'm really feeling that I'm gonna have to go back and read the whole series now though to make sure I know exactly what's going on. And I know Mike hinted that the series *might* end with #50 but at the very least that's where it was building up to so I can't wait to see what he's going to do in the next 11 issues. The bastard.

And finally Too Much Hopless Savages #1. I adore Hopeless Savages. Absolutely love it. And this looks like it's building up to be another great story. Fabulous to see the original team of Jen and Christine back together again and the art for the flashback is really lovely. Fits in perfectly. Actually I think possibly the flashback is my favourite bit, just for all the stalls. He he. And nice to see that this time around it looks like Arsenal and Twitch (to a slightly lesser degree) will get the limelight. We've already had two focusing on Zero with Rat being a main player in one as well but the middle siblings have sort of taken a back seat a bit. Time for them to step up and take the lead. I love Arsenal and Twitch is just so cute. Nice to see a gay character who isn't there to make a point about being gay. Oh, and the two grandmas (Savage and Shi) look like they're going to be fun. As for what's in the package, haven't got a clue. But I can't wait for next issue dagnabbit.

Yeah, I did see it actually (I think). It's very nice feeling to be nominated for an award. Would have been even better to win but I don't think I'd have been able to accept it since I was absolutely plastered by the time they announced the winner. [biiiig grin]

I ordered JLA Workweek but won't get into the store to pick it up until Tuesday. It sounded goofy enough to be good.

Just got 75 Wildstorm comics from Rob's eBay auction (well, no I didn't actually count them, but that's what he said and he wouldn't lie to me, would he, even if he is gay like you all say?). Hadn't read any but Global Frequency, so that's my weekend reading.

Couldn't tell you. All the stuff I got at my brand-spanking new local comic shop was back issues and TPBs. IS THERE NOTHING GOOD OUT THAT'S NEW?

Nominated? My faux pas, sorry. Well done nonetheless.

Everything I got new this week was good, more or less.

Outsiders 1
Birds of Prey 56
Wolverine 2
Trinity 1
Human Defense Corps 2

Have yet to pick up Power Company 17, Batgirl 41, Batman Adventures 3, and Gotham Knights 42.

BoP 56 was pretty good story-wise. Hadn't been liking the last couple of arcs much. I like the style of the art in general, but my main complaint is I'd like them to get away from the "teeny bopper" characterization of Dina Lance. For God's sake, she's a WOMAN, not a KID! It's kind of disconcerting because her actions seem to say "adult" but the pictures say "kid". Give me a mature representation of Dinah, and I'll even forgive the silly fishnets (bleh!!). And keep the jacket on.

Trinity #1 - skimmed it, but haven't given it a full read yet. What I saw from the first pass looked/sounded good.

JLA-Working Week -- This looked really strange and sounded really goofy from the description on the back of the book, so naturally I just had to pick it up. And it was really a lot of fun! Things which I thought were just plain unexplainable at some points in the beginning, actually worked out logically in the end.

Robin 115 - The good news is that this story arc is over. Pray to God that the next one makes sense, or this book is getting dropped.

Outsiders 1 - Let's all say this together ..... Graduation Day existed only as an "event" to launch the two new books. Now that we've admitted this, we can ignore that whole mess and try to give a fair evaluation of this on it's own. On the whole, I thought it was fair-to-good. The art was good (although I don't understand why Indigo is blue some places and aqua in others). I thought the characterizations of Dick and Roy were dead-on. I LOVE what I've seen of Grace, in just one book. She's not going to take crap from anyone, and is going to be a voice of "reality" for the team (although maybe sarcastic about it at times). Thunder was kind of ..."Yeah, So?" to me. Not really impressed with her, but it was only the first issue. Maybe she'll grow on me. Metamorpho....please go away. Please!! And take Indigo with you! Sorry, but I just can't get into robots that have been done as poorly as this thing was in 3 issues of GD and now here. Reprogramed? Give me a break. It's from the future. Do we really think that even S.T.A.R. Labs could really have figured out the technology and reprogrammed it in this short of a time. And would we really trust that we've reprogrammed it correcly, so that it won't go haywire again? I mean, c'mon. We have no reason why it went bad in the first place, so would the government (remember them ... the paranoid "big brother" types) really let it loose??? I have no patience for this Data-clone. Nitpicking department: I can tolerate Roy with a buzz, but I'd rather see long hair, and get rid of that stupid patch of chin-hair. One really big complaint department: I really, really, REALLY loathe the stupid Gorilla Grodd shit! This alone is enough to make me doubt the long term viability of this book. I want real villains and storylines, not left-over B-story crap. From the previews, we've got two issues of stupid "ape story", so there's no way I see the book getting any better until at least issue 4.

Gotham Knights 42 - Acckkk! It didn't get pulled and I didn't notice it until now. Quick, run back to the store tomorrow!

I don't see the though process behind letting an untested robot into the group. Why not Tempest for God sakes (I know, he had his reasons for leaving the Titans) or some real hero. The Power Company is done for... well, we'll see if Busiek ends the team with the book. It would be sweet to see Striker Z or Bork on the Outsiders, even Manhunter.

I'd have to say that Outsiders was indeed the highlight of the week. Both the JLA special and Trinity were enormous letdowns. Tomb Raider (yes, that shit book from Top Cow) was surprisingly readable, for the second issue in a row now! I still wouldn't recomend it to anyone though.

Trinity #1 was good, I'm excited to see what next issue has in store regarding Batman.

I picked up Spider-Man/Wolverine #1 too, seems to a bit of a simple set up of what's to come. Should be neat-o.

Next week seems to be a cheap week. Just JLA and Superman (if I even decide to buy that one). Does anyone know when the first issue of the GI Joe/Transformers crossover comes out?

A week late and $30 short.... but I was quite disappointed in JLA Workweek. Just got it today - I thought it was going to be BWA-HA funny and it was, well, not. Okay but not what I expected.
