Candidate - Moving an Oil Rig

This is from Candidate's strange concept album Under The Skylon. The Skylon was a futuristic, rocket-shaped structure that became a brief feature on the London skyline, symbolising hopes for a better future in the aftermath of the Second World War. It was later dismantled and the pieces turned into ash trays.

I was looking for a story linking the tracks together, but I think the Skylon is just a metaphor for people's hopes and dreams and the transient nature of things.

It's a funny album. The songs aren't all that great but I still like it.

Just bought:
Johnny Cash – American IV The Man Comes Around
Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
Billie Holiday – Some best of album

Probably listen to Cash first. Bought this on the strength of Hurt. The video is on the disk and this tipped me over the edge into buying it. Love that video.

Hilarious song. I like listening to them singing it in the various "styles". Van Morrisson is my favorite...

I caught onto it when I saw them do a performance on Mad TV. The audience enjoyed them more than the rest of the show.

I posted the lyrics to my soon-to-be-world-famous "It's Just Me" thread, but ya just can't do 'em justice.

One of the funniest pieces of music journalism I ever read was an interview with Faith No More. They all hated each other and made no attempts to disguise it.

Following Angel Dust they made two more albums: King for a day...Fool for a lifetime which was patchy and Album of the year which was actually rather good and has the mighty Ashes to Ashes on it (not a David Bowie cover but an original song).

The Smiths - The World Won't Listen

This has been my weightlifting and yoga soundtrack for the last week and now I'm giving it a final listen before it goes back in the box.

In some quarters The Smiths are still regarded as fey, asexual, vegetarians but there's a toughness in the music and the lyrics. It's just put across in an unusual way. It's the same kind of genius that allowed a cross-dressing, bi-sexual David Bowie to appeal to an audience who wouldn't usually be into that kind of thing.

This album of singles and B-sides comes from the tail end of their career. The band foundered, partly, because they lacked a manager who could have resolved the growing personal differences between the members of the group. I read a comment recently - I think it was from someone at their record company - that they were so insular and individual that you couldn't really help them or even get near them if you weren't part of their circle.
