What Trump said is right there in quotes WB. A free and independent press is always a threat to wannabe authoritarian.
The New Republic is not what I would call an "objective" source that honestly and accurately quotes what Trump actually said.
But here ius what they said, in ttheir hyper-partisan hit-piece, dripping with hatred for Trump :

“I say up front, openly, and proudly, that when I WIN the Presidency of the United States … the LameStream Media will be thoroughly scrutinized for their knowingly dishonest and corrupt coverage of people, things, and events,” he said. “They are a true threat to Democracy and are, in fact, THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE! The Fake News Media should pay a big price for what they have done to our once great Country!”
Trump (even as portrayed in this unhinged liberal hit piece) is not quoted saying he will jail people or reporters he doesn't like, as you falsely insinuate.
Trump only says they will be investigated and
"the LameStream Media will be thoroughly scrutinized for their knowingly dishonest and corrupt coverage of people, things, and events"
There's nothing about imprisoning reporters or his imprisoning people he doesn't like, or imprisoning his polittical opponents (which, by the way THE DEMOCRATS HAVE ALREADY BEEN DOING FOR OVER 3 YEARS, and really the last 20 years, with a Democrat-weaponized DOJ, FBI and IRS) . Trump doesn't threaten death penalties or anything like that.
He says they "will pay a price" when exposed.
Well, Bud Light has paid a price, Target has paid a price, Comcast has paid a price, CNN has paid a price, for their woke politics and deliberate deception. Trump only threatens to investigate them for accuracy and expose them, and then these media outlets and businesses will pay a price with huge losses in revenue as the public rejects their dishonesty through lost viewership and retail purchasing.
So once again, everything the Democrats and lefist media accuse Trump of, are EXACTLY what the Democrats have been doing themselves, vindictively using authoritarian federal power against THEIR political opponents, for YEARS. For DECADES.
Whereas there is no evidence that Trump would do so, or ever did, even in his previous 4 years as president.
There are many things the media reports, that Trump humorously said with sarcasm, that the media repeats out of context as if Trump was dead serious that he would do, instead of joking as he truly was.
