If DC decided that they needed to revamp the JLA and chose you to pick the characters, who would you include in the line-up?

There are some new and old new characters out there now.... Mr Majestic, Supergirl, Adam Strange.....

Batman
Superman
Aquaman
Wonder Woman
Martian Manhunter
Flash
Green Lantern
and
Zauriel

Or just get rid of all of 'em, and let The Atom be a one-man team.

Everyone loves The Atom.

The Iconic Redux

Superman
Batman
Wonder Woman
Flash
Green Lantern
Supergirl
Captain Marvel
Catwoman

GL barely makes it in, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter not at all. Most of the rest have either been in movies or had their own TV show.

And a strong team, too.

Here's my line-up:

First, the Big 7- Supes, Bats, WW, GL (Kyle; let Hal have the GL series, and let Kyle be on the JLA), Flash, Aquaman, and J'onn.

Then, we'll add Plastic Man, Captain Marvel, Green Arrow, The Atom, Hawkwoman (the JLA needs a Hawk, and why not Shayera?), Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond, not that wannabe), Red Tornado, and either Zatanna or Black Canary (haven't decided which, but you've gots to have a character in fishnets. ).

All in all, 15 solid characters.

I'd have the "Big 7" League fractured and split by the events of ID Crisis (and honestly, it's getting a bit boring anyway and the creators on the book haven't exactly been topnotch of late).

Then they'd be replaced some other characters with more room for creators to explore a bit.

Steel (John Henry Irons)-Morrison won me over to this character during his run. Proved his usefulness.

Flash (John Fox)-I've always liked this Flash. His original mostly blue uniform was a nice change of pace and the holographic logo was pretty cool visually.

Green Lantern (Jade)-Putting Jade in the GLC gives the book a link to both the golden and silver ages, and allows for some different character dynamics with the old school Flash/GL/GA type relationships.

Captain Marvel-With Supes gone, you need power, and CM's at the top of the list and is an icon in comics.

Plastic Man-bring back some of the straight guy in a zany world personality aspects (think Bruce Campbell), make him the FBI liasion to the League (ala All Star Squadron) and it works. Another icon who should be there.

Nightwing-Okay, I'm stealing this one from Pro, but it fits. They need a tactician and leader, and who better with the big guns out of the way? Grayson gets the nod here.

Hawkwoman (Shayera)-putting the Thanagarian Hawkwoman in the League keeps that aspect alive, as well as makes a decent tie in to the animated series.

Rotating spot-This allows for characters to come in on certain arcs or whereever when needed. Atom, Zatanna, Animal Man, Tyler (Hourman), Firestorm, etc. Keeps things fresh and dynamic. Reserve members can show up as needed.

If it was up to me, Batman wouldn't be in the JLA.

Hell, if it were up to me he wouldn't have a family except for Alfred and maybe Cass.

For whatever reason, the JLA never really works unless its more or less the big seven plus a few rotating second stringers...

The one thing I liked about Joe Kelly's JLA run was the "back-up" JLA he installed in The Obsidian Age, including Nightwing, Firestorm, Hawkgirl, Jason Blood, Green Arrow, Faith, Atom, and Major Disaster. It just proves that 'back-up' Leagues really can work well if need be (but only if they're done correctly).

Interesting that none of you chose any new characters to join the League.

Are there no new, exciting characters in the DCU?

Well, I was debating on Zauriel and Tomorrow Woman, and possibly one or two others. But I like the number 15.

It has occurred to me that most of the innovation in DC publications is taking place under the Wildstorm and Vertigo imprints.

If Planetary for example was in the regular DCU, you might a decent argument that Jakita Wagner join the JLA. Its a popular title with a short lifespan, and once it ends, the characters will be homeless.

Same goes for Vertigo - but can you imagine Mazikeen in the JLA?

But Captain Marvel won't be available for the JLA - not when Geoff Johns has plans to bring him back into the JSA. Johns doesn't play well with others and hates sharing, that's why Kelly wasn't "allowed" to have Cap take Superman's place in the arc that brought back Aquaman.

I'd love to see Mazikeen in the JLA. A completely amoral character who has ties to the divine power in the DCU AND can kick ass? An anti-Womder Woman? Here's how my dream JLA, featuring Mazikeen, shapes up:

Mazikeen - takes Wonder Woman's spot

Captain Marvel - replaces Superman; the idea of this pure and noble hero with a boy's heart and innocence working alongside a dangerously sexy and "completely evil" teammate, fascinates me

Nightwing - takes Batman's spot; you all of Batman's strengths, with the willingness to work with a team (fuck Winick)...a great second-in-command

Green Arrow - team leader; say what you will about his politics, but he'd be a good leader and mentor to any new heroes that come along...plus, how does the JLA's original rebel deal with Mazikeen, a rebel of Biblical proportions?

Hawkwoman - I like the idea of bringing in this sadly unused hero; a strong female character with a link to past JLA teams; another flyer; resident alien a la J'onn J'onzz

Jade - replaces Green Lantern; an energy wielder with ties to the JSA; she's earned her chance to join the JLA; fuck Winick

Jakita Wagner - takes Flash's place; speed and power; great tactical mind; her link to the pulp heroes would make for some interesting stories

There's your basic seven. Power, speed, energy-wielding, mild magic ties, ties to other teams (past and present)...it's here. Four female heroes out of seven, so it's not a boy's club. Of course, this team would be more pro-active than the current JLA (though less than the Authority). And it would allow for more guest stars - Zatanna or Constantine or Tim Hunter for magic-based adventures; Kirby's Demon for horror and the like; more science-based heroes when needed...etc...

I actually saw Mazikeen taking Batman's spot. Maz is the ruthless tactician, the War Leader of the Lilim.

Since we're crossing imprint boundaries, for sheer interest, I'd have Green Lantern, Apollo, Midnighter, Jakita Wagner, Mazikeen, the Human Target, Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow.

I'd leave out Apollo and Midnighter, just because they were based off of Superman and Batman. They seem redundant. Maz strikes me more as Diana's "replacement" because she is the War Leader of the Lilim (vs Diana as ambassador from the Amazons)...she's almost Diana's dark mirror. Plus, her origin in Judeo-Christian mythology mirrors Diana's origin in Greco-Roman mythology.

Why Green Lantern? And which Green Lantern?

Why Human Target? I don't really know the character, so his inclusion interests me. What need does he fill, besides being a character you like?

My first line-up was based on commerical viability. This line-up is just pure interest - the personailties involved would make the interaction very interesting. And a combination like Green Arrow, Mazikeen and Apollo getting stuck into an old JLA villain like Prometheus? Sounds like fun.

In any event, I reiterate my point that this all indicates that mainstream DC has no new commercially viable / popular character properties.

Go back to the satellite JLA with some adjustments. Plastic Man instead of E-man. Hawkwoman instead of Hawkman.

Also add in a bunch of international superheroes. (Some new ones)
And Captain Marvel, Halo & (ahem) Matter-eater Lad.

Also the original Star-Spangled Kid. (He's dead but he was in almost every other superteam, so why not the Justice League?)

Here's my ideal line-up

The Martian Manhunter (I can't imagine the League without him)

Superman (you can't have a team of the greatest superheroes without the Big Guy himself!)

Wonder Woman (pretty much the same reasons as Superman. Plus, she also has a big picture view that differs from Superman's)

Green Arrow (to keep the League grounded and remind them about the little guy)

Zatanna (to combat magical menaces that so many other league members are vulnerable to)

The Flash (for the sake of tradition, as Barry was a founding ember and Jay was a founding member of the JSA)

Green Lantern (see above - I'm flexible as to which GL was on the team)

Aquaman (also because of tradition and founding member status)

The Black Canary (martial arts master, stealth, and post-Crisis founding member of the League)

The Atom (you need a genuine scientific mind, and I like the character for some reason.)

Hawkwoman (even though she thinks the League is too high-and-mighty and removed from the streets. She'd get along well with GA)

As much as I like Batman and the way he interacts with other heroes, I'd like to see him as a specialist or reservist - or at least an unofficial member.

Shazamgrrl, we can safely presuppose that Geoff Johns' famous monopolisation of characters does not apply here.

I had thought this too. Chase is a good choice, but I think as an icon (or a parallel to an icon), Axel Brass would be better.

It's so tempting to just say "no" and be done with it. Especially with the retro kick DC is on of late.

However, there is a character who just debuted last week in Birds of Prey. Black Alice is a teenage girl who has the ability to channel other people's magic. In her debut appearance, she channeled the abilities of Dr. Fate, Zatanna, and the Marvels. She's proven very popular after only one appearance. So that's one at least.

Cross Imprint JLA. Fascinating. No one picked any Milestone characters?

    Cross Imprint JLA

    Hardware Milestone. Tech guy. Attitude.

Spartan Wildcats3.0/Wildstorm. Using Kherubim technology and the Void powers, he takes a low key proactive stance in keeping the group together and safe.

Jenny Sparks Authority/Wildstorm. She's got connections, she's been around, and has huge balls. She's a great leader, because she has to be.

DMZ Blood Syndicate/Milestone. Superman level powers. Works well in a group.

King Mob Invisibles/Vertigo. It's Grant Morrison as a superhero. King Mob brings occult knowledge and abilities to the table. And when he's not fighting, will probably be shagging Jenny Sparks.

Flash (John Fox) Just to throw a "traditional" DC type character in there for contrast.

Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) Guy this time around to pick fights with everyone ala JLI years.

Unknown Soldier. Vertigo. Master of disguise. Spy.

I think J-LO's "line-up" is fine as it is.
