It's now officially Christmas time. How do I know this? Is it because Christmas decorations are now up in stores? No, because they've been up since before friggin' Halloween. Is it because everyone is now displaying that Holiday Cheer? Nope. They're being as big of a buncha jerks as ever. Is it because the calendar says it's December 1st? Nuh-uh. ................. Okay, I don't have a smartass response to that one. It's quite simple. Last night TNT did it's first of an ungodly number of broadcasts of the classic A Christmas Story.

I've been a big fan of this movie since I first saw it back around '84 or so. I don't let the overabundance of airings that it's enjoyed over the past decade get to me; but I began to realize that it knocked out the movie which had dominated our TV sets for decades as the #1 Holiday movie, It's a Wonderful Life. I've also noticed an attempt to replace the old staples with the newer breed of Christmas specials. This lead me to the conclusion that Rob's Damn Boards posters need to set the record straight once and for all. We're going to name the TOP FIVE Christmas movies and specials that should be required viewing. Nominations are open from now until Saturday, Dec. 10th, followed by a week of an open voting poll. The winners will be announced on the 18th to give everyone a chance to view those films or programs, as well as keep me from having to worry about this stuff while I'm on my break.

So go forth and nominate the best damn Christmas movies and shows ever.

Yeah, I changed it to include made for TV stuff like Rudolph and Frosty cartoons. Basically, anything that isn't a regular series that airs every week on TV like The Cosby Show or Friends. If there is enough demand, we might make a seperate thread for best Christmas episodes for ongoing TV series.

You can nominate more or less than five. The top five in the voting will be the winners.

1.) Scrooged - I love Bill Murray and this is easily one of my favorite of his films. A comedic take on a classic tale that never ceases to amuse me.

2.) Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas - I consider this both a Halloween and a Christmas movie. Any film that traverses the holiday barrier so effortlessly is an instant classic in my book! Plus, it contains one of my all-time favorite movie villains - Oogie Boogie, voiced by the stellar Ken Page!

3.) Elf - I just saw this movie a few weeks ago and thought it was a DAMN funny film! Will Ferrell never disappoints and this film is no exception. That and Zooey Deschanel is hot...

4.) How the Grinch Stole Christmas - The original. Boris Karloff + Thurl Ravenscroft + Dr. Seuss = holiday gold!

5.) The Muppet Christmas Carol - I have loved the Muppets since my childhood and seeing a seasoned actor like Michael Caine interacting with some of the best memories of my childhood (i.e. - those spent in front of the television) is just too good to be true..

In no order...

A CHRISTMAS STORY...you'll shoot your eye out!

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS...you're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE...Hot dog!

NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS...there's no place more comfortable than Oogie Boogie's!

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS...and that's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

Since it appears that the judges have ruled that Charlie Brown and the animated Grinch are being counted as "movies," my list is:

1. Charlie Brown Christmas
2. Animated Grinch
3. Christmas Story
4. It's a Wonderful Life
5. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

There's a legal reason for that.

Up until about ten years ago, the broadcast rights to "It's a Wonderful Life" had somehow lapsed. This meant that every TV station in America could air it without paying royalties to the studio. As a result, every TV station in made it a holiday staple because it was cheap and starred a well-known actor (Jimmy Stewart), not because it was well-loved (in fact, it was a bomb when first released).

It was those repeated airings that imparted "classic" status on it, as more and more people realized that, hey, it's a DAMN GOOD MOVIE.

Then, about ten years ago, Ted Turner reasserted the broadcast rights and, as a result, it only airs a few times on "his" stations. I believe that is, in part, because Turner agrees that it's a classic and should be a special occasion. (But I could be wrong on that last part).

Hmm, good point. I was thinking of the 1938 version, but it is a difficult one to narrow down.

As for the other two, I was just mentioning them.

I did some searching, and this is what I found for A Christmas Carol on IMDB.com. The actor who played Scrooge's name is beside it to help clarify.

aka "A Christmas Carol: The Musical" - USA
  • 5. A Christmas Carol (1938)- Reginald Owen
  • 6. A Christmas Carol (1971)- Alastair Sim (animated)
  • 7. A Christmas Carol (1997)- Tim Curry (animated)
  • 8. A Christmas Carol (1910)- Marc McDermott
  • 9. A Christmas Carol (2000) (TV)- Ross Kemp (modern day setting)
  • 10. A Christmas Carol (1977) (TV)- Michael Hordern
  • 11. A Christmas Carol (1982) (TV)- Richard Hilger
  • 12. A Christmas Carol (1908)- Tom Ricketts
  • 13. The Christmas Carol (1949) (TV)- Taylor Holmes (Narrated by Vincent Price)
aka "A Christmas Carol" - USA (pre-release title)
