Peter Parker chose MJ over Gwen Stacy, even though Gwen is a zillion times better looking.

But, of course. Didn't you read Kirstin Dunst's interview in Entertainment Weekly? The franchise can't survive without her.

I wasn't real happy with this movie...on many levels.

It was fun, which is fine, if that's enough for you then you'll enjoy it.
James Franco and Bryce Dallas Howard absolutely saved this movie. Topher Grace nearly ruined it-horribleeeeee. Venom was completely unnecessary or Sandman was unnecessary (I liked the wings guy though-he was good). The 3 villain rule kicked this movie's ass. I would have enjoyed seeing more of Franco, Howard, and Church.

I didn't enjoy the Black costume or Venom aspects of this film-it seemed forced, and I don't think Tobey Maguire was even into the part this time-he was coasting. If they do make another Spider-Man-keep it to 1 or 2 villains, and they may want to recast Maguire and Dunst.

This could have easily been the best Spider-Man movie, because there was some genius in it, but it didn't happen enough. Everything was overcrowded, and the edits were horrible-the scenes didn't flow seamlessly. I wanted to see more of Sandman's story and more of his pain/guilt. I wanted waaay more Gwen Stacy. They could have completely made this movie about Sandman, Goblin, Spidey, MJ, and Gwen and it could have worked 50 times better. I think Raimi just wanted to do the venom story, because this will probably be his last spidey film-which is a shame-The Venom story should have been the next film, and venom could have been all alone....

3 out of 5 stars...which is a shame. This could have been amazing instead of a badly edited mishmash with too much story overload. *insert-and by 3 out of 5 stars I mean 60%, a grade D...

I liked the idea of Spidey and Harry teaming up in the end (always wanted to see that in the cartoon), but the cheesy dialogue and all made the whole thing a little too Joel Schumacher.

I would have liked to see more Sandman. It was good, but the last movie set the bar too high for "good" to be good enough. They should have split this into two movies. Not have Brock become Venom until the end and have Harry keep his memory loss until the end as well. There was some great stuff in the movie, but a lot of it seemed forced.

Oh,and Gwen Stacy had really creepy eyes.

I thought the glider scenes ("New Goblin") looked too artificial. The CGI/animation/what ever you call it/ for the Sandman and Venom looked very good; the scenes with Harry as the Goblin looked too fake and were hard to follow.

Disappointed that Sandman got a free pass at the end of the movie. He killed Uncle Ben (accident or not, he killed him) partnered up with Venom who tried to kill Mary Jane with the car in the web, and beat the living FUCK out of Spider-Man while Venom held him down. At the end, Spider-man just lets him go?

The doofus who played Eddie Brock/Venom was good, which surprised me, but I didn't expect much from the dork from "That 70's Show".

The butler who told Harry about Norman's wounds sure picked a good time to tell him. 'You've been obsessing over Spider-Man since your father died, since you think Spider-Man killed him. It's led you down a very troublesome road. By the way, I think your father impaled himself. Should have told you sooner.'

It is still a very good movie, I'll buy the DVD when it comes out.

Spoiler.

Yeah I thought the same thing with that Butler!

Eddie Brock was cool, although I thought he was a little on the young side.

Why Parker let Marko walk, I dont know, but despite the whole "sick daughter" motive, you never felt sorry for Marko other than the first time he appeared with his daughter.
After that he became a very unsympathetic character!

There was defo some inconsistancy in how MJ acted like Peter was selfish, but was being selfish herself.
She ignored him, and wondered why he then blew her off when she came to see him.
Then of course she goes running to her ex.

I hope the Gwen Stacey appearance is build up to a fourth film cause otherwise she was just pointless.
And since when was she a model?

At first that bugged me because it seemed like lame Schumacher humor, until I realized that is exactly what a lame nerd like Peter would think "cool" was.

I really think they should've cut Sandman all together. The bits with Harry and Eddie worked, but Sandman seemed shoehorned in and disconnected from everything else.

I liked Venom a lot, it made for some excellent scenes and Topher Grace was great as Eddie and Venom. I liked how they pulled back the CGI face when long bits of dialogue were involved. Venom talking to Sandman looked weird and the whole Green Goblin motionless mask dragged down the first film.

The "by the way, your Uncle died 2 years ago, and we just figured out that Flint Marko killed him" bit did feel very forced...

I think the problem with the Sandman was that for some reason they want to have a connection between all the villains and Peter.
With Venom, the Goblins and Doc Oc it all made sense, but with Sandman it was really stretching things!

The film itself was really good but the silly little things stopped it from being truly great.

Gotta say as well, that Bruce Campbell played the part of John Cleese brilliantly!

Venom was actually one of the better handled parts of the film, in the build up at least, it was just the actual Venom bit itself that was rushed (but maybe that was because Raimi did not want Venom in the movie).

The rivalry with Brock and Parker was great, and really gave Brock motivation for becoming Venom.
His character was also well thought out and was almost the mirror opposite of Parker (even more so than when Parker was Dark-Parker).
The only gripe I have, is that I thought he should have been older and more established as a photographer rather than the rookie he was.
That would have given him even more reason to hate Peter, as no adult likes being shown up by a kid!

As for Gwen, I just felt her character was just fan wank, and served no real purpose in this film unless its all part of a build up to a possible fourth outting.

The part she played in the movie could so easily have been replaced by some random bitch made up for the film, and nobody would have noticed anything different.

I do find it funny though that they cast a blonde to play red head MJ, and a red head to play blonde Gwen!

Um, it's opening weekend of Spidey 3 and we have our second Dr. Who frontpage inside of a week? And the third one inside of two? Really? C'mon!

I loved this movie - yeah, the last 20 minutes were a bit too hokey, but overall, I thought it was excellent - totally enjoyed it. I thought the buildup to Brock becoming Venom was really well done. Like NWM said, the actual Venom part was a bit rushed, but up until that point it was great. I think that they handled the Gwen part nicely - giving MJ another reason to be down on herself and adding to her jealously of Peter on a different level - both jealous of his success and of another woman - that angle worked for me and I liked that it was Gwen and not some random character.

Loved the action scenes!!! The fight between Peter and Harry in the penthouse was awesome! The audience fucking lost its mind (I love opening night audiences - they are the real fans... LOL) during that scene. The scene in the jazz club and dark-Pete dancing around the streets had everyone cracking up. Hysterical.

Would totally see this again.

Yeah, when he's like, "I've seen many things in this household...."

It was like, why the fuck didn't you say anything before? Is the butler a comic book character or a character created for the movie? I'm only a sporadic reader of Spidey, so I don't know.

I disagree. She wasn't ignoring him - everytime she tried to talk to him, he didn't listen and turned it around and made it about himself. Then he publicly uses "their kiss" in a publicity stunt with Gwen knowing full well that she was watching and doesn't think that she's going to be upset and pissed? No. I totally got where MJ was coming from here.

When she finds out about Uncle Ben's murderer still being out there (a bit forced as was the forgiveness of Flint in the end), she puts aside her anger because she loves Peter and realizes that he needs her - nothing selfish about putting aside her hurt to be there for him. The whole thing made sense.

Speaking about running to her ex - gah! The whole Harry fucking with Pete's head was fucked up! LOL Franco did a really good job with that.

Oh, and Bruce Campbell rocks! When he looks at the ring and he taps the micro diamond and says with that fake French accent, "oh, hello there" like, you're so tiny I had to actually search to find you! Awesome. One of the funniest scenes in the movie.

There was a Spidey banner up there for a few hours. But Jaberg loves those Dr. Who banners.

Cunt! Go watch the latest Wayans Bros flick that you bought!

Spoilers ahead. Read only if you want to save ten bucks.

Spider-Man 3 was a shitty flick. There were one or two villains too many. The team-ups were completely illogical. The "drama" between Peter and MJ was awful. The Stan Lee cameo and the Spidey in front of the American flag was heavy-handed and cheesy. Once again, the Spider-Man franchise blows its load by killing of its villain - in this case, two villains. And the tension built up between Sandman and Spider-Man was wasted at the end - they might as well have just hugged and given the fanboys something to wank to. Spider-Man 3 might as well have been called Spidemo, what with all the black eyeliner Tobey was wearing (why not just cast Jared Leto in the next one?). A shitty flick all around...

What they could've done to make 3 better...

They had the opportunity to bank a movie by keeping Harry as an amnesiac - rebuild the friendship between him and Peter until the 4th or 5th flick and then watch it blow up as Harry regains his memory and becomes the Green Goblin, which makes for a solid, tragic "final" battle. Hell, you can create an interesting love triangle/square by having Peter date Gwen and Harry date MJ and have romantic tension all around as a backdrop for whatever tragic way they choose to end the movie.

Remove Sandman completely. Casual viewers don't know him and his "story" was so rushed no one had time to care. Make him a background villain if you must use him. Stop trying to find ways to use your CG budget. Bringing a movie in under budget is a good thing.

The Venom storyline had enough legs to be its own movie. Eddie's dating Gwen and in line for a staff position, only to have both essentially stolen by black costume-influenced Peter? There's your first half of the movie. The rest of the flick could have been Eddie getting the Venom suit and fucking with Peter now that Peter's life is in a bit of shambles. By getting rid of the Harry and Sandman subplots, you get a better developed flick that has great drama, great action, and nothing seesm rushed or forced.

No more fucking deus ex machina. The Osborn's butler suddenly telling Harry that Morman died by his own hands, and Aunt May's random visit, created a forced team-up that made no sense. Again, heavy handed and dumb.

Well Harry dying made sense, and we knew it had to happen sooner or later (3 was the most likely as thats how many films everyone signed to do originally), and Venom didnt really die.
Did you see a body?

Killing off bad guys is something of a superhero movie tradition.
The Batman movies have been notorious for this, but at least Spiderman has been pretty true to the comics source, as all the villains who have died (and I reiterate, Venom did not die), also died in the comics.
The only thing is its had to be accelerated for the movies.

The problem with this movie is the above mentioned contracts.
Although Raimi has said in the past that he wants to do 6, and Dunst has said she will come back if Raimi and Maguire return, there is no guarantee that there will be anymore sequels, and if there are, there is no guarantee it will be the same people.
This meant that Raimi obviously had to accelerate 40 odd years of Spiderhistory if he wanted to end the story how he wanted.

Look at how poor the story in X3 was once Singer left that particular franchise, despite the fact he did all the set up for it!

Nobody is disputing that aspects of this film were rushed, but I'd hardly say it was shit!

Well Harry dying made sense, and we knew it had to happen sooner or later (3 was the most likely as thats how many films everyone signed to do originally), and Venom didnt really die.
Did you see a body?

I'll agree that Harry has to die sooner or later, but he didn't have to go in this movie. As for Venom, yes I'm sure they could come up with an explanation for how Venom survived, but why put the screenwriters in that position in the first place? More on that in a moment...

Yes, killing off the villains is a tradition, but why does it have to be that way? To me, studios assist in the deaths of their franchises that way. Instead of thinking, "This franchise has to end sometime, so we'll just kill of the bad guys...", why not develop a mindset that there's no reason that (for example) Spider-Man can't be a franchise the way Bond is a franchise? If you don't needlessly kill off a character/villain, you can re-use that character/villain further down the line. There's no need to blow your proverbial load, only to have to "re-vamp"/"re-start" your franchise. Yes, actors get old, and I know that there have been multiple Bonds. But killing the villain is cliche and lazy.

I'd argue that Maguire and Dunst are replaceable. Are either such strong actors that the franchise would suffer their loss? I'd argue not. And, if Raimi wants to do six, let him do six. That gives you three movies to find his successor - hell, he might even help you find his successor. The reason X3 suffered the loss of Singer was because it was such a (relatively) sudden departure and his successor - Brett Ratner - isn't nearly as good of a director as Singer is.

Take it from another angle - considering how popular the franchise is, do you think Maguire and Dunst WOULDN'T want to ride this particular train for as long as it runs? I don't think the contracts are as much a factor as people think.

Nobody is disputing that aspects of this film were rushed, but I'd hardly say it was shit!

I think it was. It certainly wasn't nearly as good as Harley makes it out to be.

What I am saying with Dunst & Maguire et al, isnt that they are not replaceable, its that if Raimi only wants to work with them, or just for consistancy, it makes sense to wrap up storylines which involved those particular actors.
Also, its not about "if Raimi wants to do 6, let him do 6", its about what Sony and, to a lesser extent, Marvel want.

Rumours suggest that Raimi is trying to adapt the Hobbit, which would put a crimp in both his plans, and Sonys plans if they decide to continue the Spidey franchise (dont forget it was Superman that got in the way of Singer completing the X trilogy).

Raimi knew that despite what he wants to do, he might not be able to do that.
Sony could go ahead and make Spiderman 4-100 if they want, but only they can decided whether they sign Raimi to do those pictures.

Raimi could have planned out a shit load of things for Spidey 4, but he knew that was not a guarantee.

I think in this particular case, the fact Raimi is a comic book geek has gone against him.
Where as a normal director works on a single idea for a superhero movie, I think Raimi wanted to fit in as many bits of Spidey history as possible, and forgot when to stop.

He never got as far as actually watching the movie!

Did we see the same movie?

Seriously.

The only thing that I might agree with you is that Sandman was superfluous. And even that wasn’t enough to detract from my enjoyment of the movie. As for Stan Lee’s cameo – it’s Stan Lee for fuck’s sake! His cameo is s’posed to come with a big vat ‘o cheese. That cannot seriously be considered a legitimate gripe.

As for MJ and Pete’s drama – I completely disagree with you. I thought it made totally sense, and to me, it did not seem forced at all. The angle with Harry and the jealousy also worked well and was in line with the comics- as was his death. The whole symbiote lead up was well done, even if the Venom part seemed a little rushed. And as NWM said, was there a body? No. And this is comic books for crying out loud – like a comic book death is ever permanent. I honestly can’t believe that so many of you found so many faults with this movie and found no enjoyment from it whatsoever.

I enjoyed it a lot, its just stupid little things that stopped it from being the greatest superhero film of all time that disapointed me!

I also hate the fact that Gwen Stacy was introduced after the original Goblin died!
She shoulda been in the first movie, and died at the hands of the Goblin with MJ not appearing til either the end of the 1st movie or not until number 2!

PS:
Just thinking about it, did anyone else see similarities between the Sandman storyline and Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin?
Both were comitting crimes because of someone they were trying to save, but neither were particulary sympathetic characters!

Now see who admits that they have seen that film

I did.

Ok, this is something that I've wondered about - why go with MJ first and not Gwen? If Gwen had been thrown off the bridge and died, they still coulda had MJ as the love of Pete's life.

That's something I never understood - especially since Raimi is a fan himself.

I think its why I was so put off by her being in 3, yet having very little impact on the story.

Gwen was as key in what made Spiderman who he is, as Uncle Ben.

If you were to pick the top five defining moments in Spidermans early years, you'd be hard pressed to not have Gwens death at number two (with Bens death at number 1).
