Who here has read Alex Ross & Jim Kreuger's epic Earth X Trilogy (Earth X, Universe X, and Paradise X)?

I had only read most of Earth X, and thought it was pretty good. Is it worth reading the rest of it?

And if so, WHY?

I followed all three maxi-series in the trilogy. The first one was good. The second was...okay. There were some interesting things said about the nature of the heroes and villains and the story itself wasn't too bad. It did get a little bogged down in places, though. The third one was...well, it wasn't as good as it could've been. You got the feeling from reading it that the creative team was running (or had run) out of steam, and that Marvel wasn't fully behind the concept anymore. Issues came out late and some of the related one-shots were confusing.

I'll have to agree. The trilogy went downhill from the beginning. Ross tried to put too much into the story, and Universe and Paradise both ended up being bogged down with too much crap.

It would have been best if they'd stopped with the end of Earth X, or better yet waited a year or two between major books.

Whilst I agree with the previous 2 hunks, I would however wholeheartedly recommend it!

As has been said, the first was the best part, I felt a lot of heroes had important parts to play and it got real exciting at the end. I think(correct me if I'm wrong), the was a Galactus revelation that carried on into main Marvel universe!

The next two parts did get a little weaker but I think that was more down to pacing and again, it has been said, it got bogged down within itself. But I felt it was very intelligently written with some great concepts - I don't really want to go into detail as it will ruin the journey!

It's also true, that Marvel gave up on the series towards the end, I remember the whole series had card stock covers and the last 3 issues of paradise X were just in regular format!

Now that you can get the whole story in 5 trades and you probably could get them cheap at cons, I say go for it!

I'll have to get the last issue of Earth X I'm missing eventually, then track down the TPBs only when they're REALLY cheap.

I really liked Earth X. Originally, I was disappointed that Alex Ross didn't do the interiors (that would have taken FOREVER), but I've come to like John Paul Leon's art after his New X-Men fill-in (he would have been a better permanent fill-in instead of Kordey) and his Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix. It always annoyed me that he didn't do interiors for that one Action Comics issue where Clark returns to Smallville for his high school reunion (he drew a very nice cover, though).

I've realized that Earth X takes many of the concepts brought up in Kingdom Come to an extreme. Where the future in the DC Universe is the result of a cluttering of superheroes to the point where they become the superhero equivalent of Pokemon, Earth X ups the ante by making everyone a mutant. Instead of frightening new "heroes" battling each other out of boredom and striking fear into the hearts of the public, we have those same types of characters taking over the country and carrying out a cross-country systematic genocide tour, much like the Rolling Stones with a lust for murder rathern than crass commercialism.

DC's heroes are altered, but still recognizable. Batman is still Batman, except he's completely paralyzed. Superman is a depressed recluse. Orion has replaced his father as ruler of Apokalips. Meanwhile, in the Marvel Universe, everything is twisted into barely-recognizable shapes. Spider-Man is an old fart with no desire to swing around on pretend web, leaving the job to his Symbiote-bearing daughter. Jean Grey and Wolverine are unhappilly married, leaving Cyclops to lead a bunch of freakish X-kids on his own. Daredevil is a flaming Ghost Rideresqe motorcyle stunt exhibitionist, an EVIL Kenevel if you will. Captain America is a scarred bald man doing an impression of Larry Flynt.

Instead of Normal McKay and The Spectre, you have Uatu and X-51: The Machine Man, not to mention their pet astronaut dog, John Jameson, providing us the exposition to explain what the hell happened to everyone.

Wow, I think I just got myself pumped up for rereading it. I must grab these once I visit my parents' house.

I've liked the whole series so far. Kind of neat seeing everything explained & all tied together. I'm still waiting to get the 5th trade to see how it all ends though.

HE let his missis have a go - damn wimmen drivers!
Bang a gong!

I checked out one of these issues. Spoilers.

I quite liked the Galactus revelation. It was cool that Reed Richards turned Galactus into a star, and sad that his son took on the mantle (I didn't know it flowed through into regular continuity) and ended up destroying those big giant things. I liked how Reed was wearing Doom's armour, too (why, I don't know, but it suggested that Reed had finally beaten Doom at some point). I also liked how Silver Surfer found his girlfriend and was amused by the irony that she was killed in the battlewith the big giant things. The Surfer always was a whingy bitch.

Shitty art, though, so I won't buy it.
