World War II hero, former Sen. Bob Dole announces he has stage 4 lung cancer: Dole’s political career spanned nearly five decades. He represented Kansas in both the House of Representatives and Senate, where he spent time as both the majority and minority leader. He was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996, losing to Bill Clinton.

That being said, he ran for President against a popular Democrat and, I’m sure if we dug deep enough, we could find out that he said something probably politically incorrect.

So, I am sure the left-wing ghouls that post here must be celebrating.

No need to weaponize Bob Dole’s death for the cause G-man. I’m not celebrating either death but Limbaugh made a fortune off of being nasty to a crowd that found it entertaining. Bob Dole wasn’t a Limbaugh and probably will not get anywhere near the praise from the right that Rush did. His wife Libby was kind enough to donate to my late boyfriend’s charity event way back when and I’m very sorry for her loss.

Dole was actually a pretty decent guy from much of what I've read. Not quite a Rockefeller Republican, but not a lackey of the New Right either. It's sad he's been diagnosed with this. Look, I get the whole "don't speak ill of the dead" thing is pretty personal for you right now for obvious reasons. (I lost three family members over the course of 2020 myself, and it really fucking sucks.) But I think I pointed out before that I don't typically do that. Hell, I didn't even get particularly excited when Saddam or bin Laden died. But there's an immense difference at work when you're discussing someone who knowingly and deliberately expended their life being hateful toward entire swaths of humanity. Which Bob Dole wasn't, as far as I know.

I think he’s an honorable and decent man who I frequently disagreed with on policy. Certainly not rejoicing that he’s dying G-man.

Bob Dole is a legitimate war hero, who was permanently injured on the battlefield saving a lot of other guys. I read the full account of Dole's valor on the battlefield about 10 years ago in a Time-Life special issue, THE POWER AND THE GLORY, dated April 2002.
