recently becoming common knowledge, howard stern's radio show was dropped by 6 stations, and the shock jock was later fined by the FCC, specifically for phrasing used on a show 2 years ago.

the entire transcript is here, but the following is a quick little blurb, "probably" containing the dirtiest part:

Quote:

howard: Yeah, but nobody knows what it is. A blumpkin… I can explain it cleanly.

robin: There's nothing clean about a blumpkin.

howard: Well, a blumpkin is receiving oral sex while you're sitting on a toilet bowl if you are a man. You're sitting on a toilet bowl and uh, while you're evacuating you receive your oral.

thats why howard was fined.

i'd wager none of you find the above offensive, in the least. however, the FCC is like a judge. there are no set rules of what you can and can't say, they simply make it their job to determine what is offensive and what is just silly, what is indecent, and what is clean.

the above they felt was indecent.

the following, from the oprah show, they felt was not:

Quote:

Oprah: Lets talk about that secret language Michelle.

Michelle: Yes

Oprah: I didn't know any of this

Michelle: I have yea, I have gotten a whole new vocabulary let me tell ya

Oprah: I did not know any of this

Michelle: Salad tossing, cucumbers, lettuce tomatoes ok

Oprah: ok so so what is a salad toss?

Michelle: ok a tossed salad is, get ready hold on to your underwear for this one, oral anal sex, So oral sex with the anus is what that would be.

Michelle: a rainbow party is an oral sex party it's a gathering where oral sex is performed and rainbow comes from all of the girls put on lipstick and each one puts her mouth around the penis of the gentleman or gentlemen who are there to receive favors and makes a mark um in a different place on the penis hence the term rainbow

that was from the march 18, 2004 oprah show (a repeat of an older episode). go here to hear it for yourself.

that went on the air without a single warning. a single beep. oprah was not fired from any stations, her show was not dropped from any zone, and she didn't receive a single fine.

whether you find either howard or oprah's show offensive is a matter of personal opinion. however, i think these two examples clearly show that the two shows featured content on the same exact level, and one was no more or less explicit than the other. essentially, as far as the FCC goes, those two shows should be on a pier with one another (i.e; keep oprah? keep howard. fine howard? fine oprah.)

it gets worse.

jimmy kimmell played this on his show the other night to point out the hypocracy. it got out ok. the next day, howard played the tape of the oprah show .... and was bleeped!!

amazing hypocracy?

I understand why people are pussyfooting around with Howard, but EVERYONE else has caught up with him in terms of content. All these shows on VH-1 feature celebrities talking about graphic stuff. Nicole Ritchie swore during the Billboard awards; I don't hear ANY complaints (yet we hear about Bono's swear word - go figure).

You need to remember, however, part of the definition of indecency has to do with content and the reason the language was used.

For instance, if Oprah was using these words are part of a journalistic report for educational purposes, that's different under the law than using them for shock or titillation.

listening and reading thru the content and context of both makes them sound awfully similar.

there's not much educational value in the discussion of tossing salad. chris rock knew.

i agree. I used to listen to Stern in 8th grade (way back...)
Got tired of him though, more because it just gets boring. (Except watching the hot girls that come to visit him when he is on E!)
I just listen to whatever floats it at the time.
Just use the clicker, it only burns 3 calories!
Pointless argument for the FCC anyway due to our current democratic structure.
I thought Stern was really dropped because everybody in the other areas started copying him and he lost market share.
Is this not the true reason?

Hell no. He was still number 1 in a couple of the markets he was pulled from, and I believe in at least the top five in all of them.

True, there are some markets that he's not dominating because copycats took the audience when Stern wasn't around(Chicago), but that ain't why he was dropped.

You're absolutely right, though. It's not hard to just not listen to anybody you don't wanna listen to.

And that's terrible.

I thought they dropped the show because of the time Stern recieved a 500,000 dollar fine for calling President Bush a "fucking cunt". If I were the network I would be pissed for recieving that fine.

I have no clue what you're referring to. Clear Channel dropped Stern after a caller used the n-word.

nope.

1) stern never said that, or anything similar
2) clear channel dropped howard because of a caller's comments
3) clear channel dropped howard before the government recently fined him (which was regarding some weird sexual phrasing 2 years ago, reprinted above)

But he did call Bush a “[bleep]ing cunt“! I heard it on te program itself! And then I was told by a friend a few days later that Stern complained on the show about getting a huge fine for saying that.

But I guess it doesn't matter. Stern had it coming for years and it will be grim defeat for our freedom of speech. His program of fart jokes and porn stars will surely be missed.
