Sorry for all the bumps but it took looking 82 fucking pages of "media" threads to find some that dealt with the fucking RIAA,DRM software, SunnComm or "CD piracy".

Nice search feature there.

Everytime I typed in RIAA or R.I.A.A. etc. I'd get no results.

The initial article linked in the first post talks about what I just found out about tonight.

I was just up in arms because I just got the Kasabian CD and wanted to make a backup of it for my car(WHICH IS FUCKING LEGAL BTW! ) and I find that after I inserted it into my computer, it installed some crap device driver to prevent me from excersizing my fair use rights!!!!

The program is called "mediaMax" and it's apparently also on the Velvet Revolver CD.

I was so freaking mad. Not so much that it was copy protected but that it pretty much installed software on my comp without my authorization.

I looked up this copy protection scheme up on Google and it led me here.. Good thourough and useful site by the way. Now if I had known about all this beforehand, I could have simply pressed my shift key down as I loaded the disc and none of this crap would have happened. Yes, the so-called "copy protection" is that good. LOL!

However, since I was unaware of this, then i had to go into the device manager and disable the driver for that program that installed itself the minute I inserted my CD into my CD drive.. Yeah, it's that easy to disable too! Which leads me to ask then WHY THE FUCK INCLUDE THIS CRAP IN A CD IN THE 1ST PLACE???!!!!

I'm not sure what'll happen if I simply uninstall the driver but I don't want to risk finding out.

Here's an intersting article I also came across that details this scheme that is being used apparently only by Sony-BMG. I just wanted to vent my outrage over it. We're quickly losing even our "fair use" rights to sate these motherfuckers' greed.

Sony-BMG: "What matters to us is the consumer experience. So we're going to make it worse."

back on topic, isn't that basically the equivalent of the RIAA installing a virus or unwanted spyware on your comp?

I've read the linked article on how to deter this method. It just seems like a lot of money spent to merely inconvenience someone and fuck with their comp in underhanded ways.

I appreciate the fact that the music business is in the midst of considerable turmoil. CD sales are abysmal, record companies are losing a lot of money, and music pirating has become fairly routine, prompting thousands of lawsuits from the RIAA against consumers. It’s an industry facing major, system challenges.

But if the music business wants to get back on track, this definitely isn’t the way to do it.

 Quote:
[I]n an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry’s lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are “unauthorized copies” of copyrighted recordings.

“I couldn’t believe it when I read that,” says Ray Beckerman, a New York lawyer who represents six clients who have been sued by the RIAA. “The basic principle in the law is that you have to distribute actual physical copies to be guilty of violating copyright. But recently, the industry has been going around saying that even a personal copy on your computer is a violation.”

It’s as if the industry is anxious to destroy any remaining goodwill it may have left.

This shows the total desperation these companies are in right now. Trying to shake down people who legitimately bought their product for a few more bucks. This of course completely contradicts the 80's era 'fair use' ruling though...

But lawyers for consumers point to a series of court rulings over the last few decades that found no violation of copyright law in the use of VCRs and other devices to time-shift TV programs; that is, to make personal copies for the purpose of making portable a legally obtained recording.
