Just bought the special edition DVD of this movie yesterday. But damn, how could I have forgotten how cool this movie was? At nine years old, I had a burning hatred for anything Western. I thought cowboys and indians were old-fashioned and boring compared to my generation's gunslinger, Han Solo, with his blasters, Chewie, and the Millenium Falcon replacing the six-shooters, faithful sidekick, and valiant steed of the traditional western.

But when I was nine years old in '88, I went to go see this movie mainly b/c it had Keifer Sutherland in it, that kick-ass vampire from Lost Boys. I thought I was going to hate it, but from the very beginning, it pulled me in. Grittier and more realistic than any western I'd seen before (I hadn't been exposed to the Eastwood/Leone trilogy, or the Wild Bunch, yet), I immediately felt a connection with the Regulators. By the end of the movie, I was begging my mom to buy me a western outfit from K-Mart. Before long, I was Billy the Kid (my name really IS Billy), servin' warrants and drygulchin' the outlaws.

I haven't seen Young Guns in probably 8 or 9 years. So when I saw it on sale for 9.89, I just had to buy it. The DVD comes with a few cool extras, like a real documentary of Billy the Kid, an audio commentary with Lou Diamond Phillips and two other guys, and a Fact Guide that points out all the realistic facts of the movie. I haven't gotten a chance to check either of those features out.

Re-watching, I remembered all the reasons why I loved this movie. Lots of cussin' and blood. But not enough boobies, I noticed this time around. None at all, as a matter of fact. Something that was quickly corrected in the sequel, only this time featuring my favorite part of a chick's anatomy, her ass. Anyway, something really stood out that made me laugh my fucking ass off for a good ten minutes... I'm talking gut-busting laughter, where it hurt.

The peyote scene, where Chavez paints his face and makes the rest of his buddies drink from his cup. Soon after that, they're all trippin' nuts in the middle of the New Mexican desert.

"Didjo guys see the size of them GOTDAMN CHICKENS?"

"Hey, how'se come they ain't killin' us?"

"Cuz we're in the spirit world, asshole, they can't see us!"

I kept waiting for the line, "I'll make ya famous," but I guess that's in the sequel. Plus, YGII had the only Bon Jovi song I ever really liked on it's soundtrack..."I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride... I'm wanted, dead or alive..."

9 in 88?!? Man do I feel old!

I too didn't care for westerns when I was younger. I guess I can blame it on being subjected to too many spagettii westerns throughout the 80s. But then I saw the Magnifacent 7 and thought that was good. Young Guns had to have been the first western I actually liked and then watched Young Riders, thanks to Young Guns. But I don't remember there being a sequal to it.

That song was not in the film, the song that you are thinking of was Blaze of glory, not Wanted dead or alive!

I got both these films on DVD,and like you say,you can forget how much you love a film (I recently bought the Beverly Hills cop trilogy & felt the same).

Good thing about Young Guns was that both films were equally as good.
Its rare for sequels to match the the debut, but Young Guns II is one of those rarities!

My sister's friend went to the sequel just to see Jon Bon Jovi die. I swear, they left after the first five minutes.

I *know* what the name of the song is. I was just quoting the opening lyrics.

My favorite scene is when they're all trippin' on peyote and one of 'em keeps saying "Did you see the size of that chicken???" Then he asks his horse "Hey Dawg, did you see the size of that chicken?" and fires his rifle by accident. Drunk or sober, that scene cracks me up. I have, during boozefests, while watching that damn scene, had to run to the bathroom to keep from pissing myself.

Hey... that's MY favorite scene. Give it back.

And when they're passing thru the Indian village, and Dirty says, "Hey, Billy, how'se come they ain't killin' us?" And Billy replies, "'Cuz we're in the spirit world, asshole, they cain't see us." And they all start giggling like schoolgirls.

P.S. The first gunshot/gore scene that ever shocked me came when Billy dusted off Murphey's spy. "But I [mumble mumble] somethin' with no gotdamn traitor -- " BLAM!!!!!! And he shoots the spy right through the head and point blank range, splattering brains and blood all over Doc (Keifer). I think I remember that, the brains, the most.

The only other gunshot/gore scene that made a lasting impact on me as a child was Murphey's death in Robocop. I just remember it seemed to last for like 10 or 15 minutes... just him gettin' his hand and arms and shit blown off with shotguns.
