LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor John Ritter, who gained fame playing bumbling and lovable characters in a pair of television comedies decades apart, has died, a representative said on Friday.
Details of the circumstances of his death were not immediately available.

Ritter was best known for his portrayal of Jack in the 1970s situation comedy "Three's Company" and recently he starred in the series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," a centerpiece of broadcaster ABC's upcoming fall schedule.

John Ritter was the son of country singer and actor Tex Ritter.

That's sad. He'd finally gotten back on TV with a successful show, and now he's gone.

Damn. My man Jack is dead. It's weird; I just finished watching Three's Company. That was my favorite show while growing up.

How'd he die?

Just found out he had a heart condition that he was apparently unaware of. He felt ill during taping of his show, and suffered a massive heart attack later at the hospital.

I remember watching Three's Company growing up...

...and it's hard to believe he's gone.

He was 54, he would have turned 55 next week. This is a shock to everyone. I didn't believe it when I saw it in an email on one of the yahoo groups I'm on so I looked into it to find it true. I was shocked what I found out it was true.

RIP John

8 Simple Rules... was a great show. It's really sad that he's gone, especially since I just started to enjoy his work... [sad]

Without Him, Three's Company would never have worked. I mean, a half hour of jiggling would get ratings for a few weeks, but c'mon... Ritter held the show together.

His appearances on the Mary Tyler Moore show and The Waltons were nifty, too.

And I've always had a UHF-Like spot in my heart for Stay Tuned.

[eh... i dunno... ]

I didn't think it was a great show, but it was clearly starting to gain steam. Few actors can enjoy one successful tv show; Ritter seemed to be well on his way to enjoying a second. I can't see 8 Simple Rules continuing without him, both in a literal and figurative sense.

I still think he should have gotten an award for his performance in Sling Blade. And his guest spot on Scrubs was also fantastic as J.D.'s father. He was a great, highly underrated actor.

Well, you're not ABC, Who is considering rerplacing Ritter's character with an uncle, to be played by Henry Winkler, Howie Mandel, or Richard Kline (Y'know, Larry from Three's Company).

Why couldn't Howie Mandel been taken instead?!

Ritter will be missed...

I usually found Ritter entertaining and am certainly saddened at his loss. I was far more upset by it than by Cash's as Cash was a sick old man whose death was more or less expected. For Johnny, death is probably a relief.

But with Ritter's latest show, I, as a parent, found it very annoying. For starters, he was a U. of Michigan fan, which never goes far in this Buckeyes fan's house. But more to the point, I found it really sending a bad message to see Ritter's character trying to suck up so much to his clearly annoying children.

This is the saddest I've ever felt for a celebrity's death since Owen Hart!

As a Wolverine...

...I wish I had watched "8 Simple Rules..."

Still, for simple escapist John Ritter fair, look for "Noises Off" or "Hero At Large" (And, didn't know he had been in an episode of "Hawaii Five-O"...thanks TV Land! I kind of remember watching a few "Hooperman" as well, back in the day...)

If Heroin-chick stick figures are your thing, then yes, she did.

However, if you like a woman who doesn't look like a prepubescent boy, well... You'd better go back to 1974.

Where's the wayback machine, Mr. Peabody?!?

I agree with the sentiment of this thread.

Full bodied chicks are much sexier.

Tough call...

Janet (circa season one) really had a hot body, and a great look... except the hair. Give her the hair from a later season, an season one's body, and she's a minx.

Chrissy.... big, bouncy, ditzy, jiggly blonde. What more can one say?

Cindy.... she was alright.

Terri... Damn nice body, and in her earlier episodes, a helluva face to go with it.

Ms. Roper... how many shots of tequila have I had?

It's too tough to call. Couldn't I just have all of 'em?

The (real, not whomod fabricated) Associated Press:
  • Two doctors were not negligent in the diagnosis and treatment of John Ritter, who died from a torn aorta in 2003, a jury found Friday in a wrongful death lawsuit by the actor's widow and children.

The lawsuit claimed that a radiologist failed to spot a purported enlargement of the aorta in a body scan conducted two years before Ritter's death and that there was malpractice by the cardiologist summoned to treat the actor at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with a heart attack.

The jury voted 9-3 to clear Dr. Joseph Lee, the cardiologist, and Dr. Matthew Lotysch, the radiologist, of the negligence claims.

Ritter was 54 when he became ill while working on his hit sitcom "8 Simple Rules ... for Dating My Teenage Daughter" and was taken to the hospital on Sept. 11, 2003.

Lawyers for Ritter's widow, Amy Yasbeck, and children claimed Ritter's death resulted in a loss of as much as $67 million in future earnings. Attorneys said Friday that because Ritter would have had expenses such as paying an agent and staff, they were actually seeking about $43 million in damages for the family.
