"Superman" star Christopher Reeve has died at age 52

By The Associated Press

BEDFORD, N.Y. — Christopher Reeve, the star of the "Superman" movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52.
Reeve fell into a coma Saturday after going into cardiac arrest while at his New York home, his publicist, Wesley Combs told The Associated Press by phone from Washington, D.C., on Sunday night.

Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound that he developed, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection.

"On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband," Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, said in a statement. "I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years."

Reeve broke his neck in May 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Va.

Enduring months of therapy to allow him to breathe for longer and longer periods without a respirator, Reeve emerged to lobby Congress for better insurance protection against catastrophic injury and to move an Academy Award audience to tears with a call for more films about social issues.

He returned to directing, and even returned to acting in a 1998 production of "Rear Window," a modern update of the Hitchcock thriller about a man in a wheelchair who becomes convinced a neighbor has been murdered. Reeve won a Screen Actors Guild award for best actor in a television movie or miniseries.

"I was worried that only acting with my voice and my face, I might not be able to communicate effectively enough to tell the story," Reeve said. "But I was surprised to find that if I really concentrated, and just let the thoughts happen, that they would read on my face. With so many close-ups, I knew that my every thought would count."

In his public appearances, he was as handsome as ever, his blue eyes bright and his voice clear.

"Hollywood needs to do more," he said in the March 1996 Oscar awards appearance. "Let's continue to take risks. Let's tackle the issues. In many ways our film community can do it better than anyone else. There is no challenge, artistic or otherwise, that we can't meet."

In 2000, Reeve was able to move his index finger, and a specialized workout regimen has made his legs and arms stronger. He has also regained sensation in other parts of his body.

I don't know what to say.
I know I've made fun of him, but I have always respected him.

I don't know what will happen if I we lose another legendary actor.

He was my hero, too. When I was young, Superman was made real by Christopher Reeve's impressive acting. His transition from Clark Kent to Superman and back was done so well -- it's like he was a different person entirely (though it's kind of hard to disguise that jawline).

After the riding accident Reeve the actor became one of my heroes as an adult in the way he continued to fight. I honestly believed that he, out of anyone in the same position, would eventually be able to walk again. Sad to see that this will now never happen.... at least on earth.

I can only hope that in death he's recovered the mobility he had lost in life.

Here's to ya, Mr. Reeve.

This is the first time in my life that the death of a celebrity has struck me as heartbreaking, and I just heard about it.....

I'm actually crying over this. Thanks to him we have had a run of great comic book movies. This is heartbreaking.

Here is a link to his foundation if anyone wants to make a donation.

When they had Margot Kidder on smallville, I was worried something like this would happen. I wonder if they knew for a while he was in really bad shape.

It sometimes seemed like Christopher Reeve was willing his body to mend itself.

It takes a person of great character to struggle against an incurable condition like this, knowing that their successes will be small and will make only marginal improvements on their quality of life. The physical and mental strain he must have put himself under, simply for the priviledge of being able to move his finger, must have been enormous.

In the final years of his life that man was tested everyday. I remember him as a man who refused to lie down and accept his situation.

If anyone had embodied what Superman was in spirit, it was Reeve. Damn, this hurt. This guy has done so much more than I think I'd be able to in his situation. He's flying for real now.

I:( just heard the news through one of my yahoo groups.

With everything I'd read recently, I thought he would live forever, at least longer than he did. You guys might not know this, but since the accident, he has let doctors use him to test things out on, to help other paralysed people. In a way this hits a bit closer to us at work because his Paralysis foundaton is one of our charitable partners. I don't know if my boss heard the news yet or not, but I emailed her the story.

I just realized something, the other day I pulled out my Superman tshirt to wear to bed, I have it on now.

His foundaiton has a statement on their splash page. For those interested in reading more about what he did since the accident, I'd suggest checking out the site, it's very interesting reading.

Flashback to the opening night of the first Superman movie. A buddy and I had just been pulled over by a rent-a-pig at the local race track and he busted me for possesion of marijuana. Despite the fact that the pot belonged to my buddy and we were driving in his car and he was the idiot driving rather stupidly I wound up with the ticket for possesion. (I was of age.) Completely in a state of shock at this turn of events we proceeded on to the movie...where I completely forgot my troubles and became completely immersed in movie/comic book magic that would continue for years. I recently got the four Superman movies off of e-bay and had just watched Superman two last week-end. The part where Lois discovers Clark is Superman and Christopher Reeve goes from meek mild mannered Clark to the Man of Steel just by taking off his glasses, standing a little straighter, and deepening his voice still blows me away! I do believe that a man can fly...and I'm sure Christopher Reeve is flying with angel wings now! God rest his soul!

Its sad but to be honest at least his suffering is now over.
I would not want to live the last nine years he did,but he had more strength than that.
Nobody should have to live like that so I can only hope if there is life after death, that he is the man who he once was,not the shell he became!

Why? It was a great movie. And it may have been the first time to "star" actors kissed. Why not celebrate the risks the man took in his professional career?
