Kind of a generic trailer, but I'm a fan of Spielberg and Cruise so I'll see it.

I thought Spielberg said he'd never direct a movie with evil aliens in it b/c he firmly believes any spacefaring culture would be inherently peaceful. I read this somewhere, I know I did.

Well... maybe there'll be a twist at the end where the whole thing is really a radio broadcast that people are hearing and get freaked out. Nothing like a twist ending, eh?

I got the feeling that this was one of those trailers that shows footage that really isn't in the movie.

The teaser didn't make me want to see the movie. Instead, it made me wish even more that it had been a period piece set in the Victorian era just like the H.G. Wells novel.

It's Spielberg. The trailer could consist of elephant pooping footage, I would still see this.

AI was a great movie, except for the last half hour. That aliens digging the kid up in the ice and bringing his mom back for just one day was really crappy.

That was the original plan. However, Jeff Wayne, who did the WOTW musical album, was determined that any period movie would have to be an adaptation of his musical. He succeeded in killing a planned version with Kenneth Branagh and Brian Blessed and nearly derailed the Cruise/Spielberg version. In the end, both sides compromised. Paramount makes a modern-day version, Wayne makes his CGI animated musical version, both parties walk away happy.

However--and I'm not sure how they did this--a low-budget outfit called Pendragon Pictures shot their own WOTW movie for release next year. The only problem is, it looks like something you'd see on public-access TV.

The full trailer is up now. This looks really good, a lot of death and destruction going on. Hopefully Spielberg won't gay it up too much.

'War of the Worlds' invades bookstores
By Leilani Gallardo, USA TODAY

The release of Steven Spielberg's remake of the science-fiction classic War of the Worlds, which opens Wednesday, already is triggering stories about how Orson Welles' radio adaptation on Oct. 30, 1938, incited panic among thousands of listeners who believed aliens had landed in Grovers Mill, N.J.

But before the movie (both the new and the 1953 versions) and before the radio drama, there was H.G. Wells' novel. His book, set in Victorian England and about an invasion from Mars, remains as popular today as when first published in 1898.

Spielberg reimagines Wells' world (Americans rather than Brits are trying to escape ever-more-savvy space invaders), and the film has prompted renewed interest among book publishers:

  • A reprint of the 1960 edition of War of the Worlds, illustrated by celebrated artist Edward Gorey, is being released by New York Review Books ($16.95). "Startlingly up-to-date and is in touch with the most ancient of human fears," editorial director Edwin Franks says of Wells' masterpiece.

  • A 50th-anniversary edition of the American Classics Illustrated comic-book version drawn by Lou Cameron is being published by Jack Lake Productions ($14.99). "We honor the original line art of the original artist and provide enhanced, embellished coloring techniques," company president Jaak Jarve says. With the original panels from 1955 already lost, Jarve says, the comic book's inside drawings had to be scanned and literally retraced by hand using ink on paper.

  • Best Sellers Illustrated is coming out with an updated graphic novel of War of the Worlds ($13.99). Written by Steven Stern and illustrated by Star Trek comics' Arne Starr, it's set in post-9/11 New York. Martians invade but are outsmarted by New Yorkers.

How come they banned the reviews of the movie till the day it comes out?

German critics on 'War' path over embargo

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/news/sto...RTR&coview=

COLOGNE, Germany (Hollywood Reporter) - German film critics are up in arms over Paramount's worldwide embargo on reviews of Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" until the film's day-and-date release next Wednesday.

The country's leading film critics association launched an official protest Wednesday against what it calls "a violation of basic constitutional rights."

In an open letter, the German association of film critics called on its members to protest the "War of the Worlds" embargo by publicizing details of the studio's demands and criticizing the distributor's no-review policy. The association also called on its members to violate any future embargoes or to refuse to review films where an embargo is imposed.

"We know this (embargoes on film reviews) is common in the U.S., but it has never happened here in Germany before, and we won't stand for it," Andrea Dittgen, head of the German critics association, said in an interview. "We believe this violates basic freedom of speech rights and is illegal under German law."

It is common in Germany for distributors not to screen their films for critics before release, but "War of the Worlds" is the first film where critics have had to sign waivers pledging not to review the film before its official bow.

Not all German critics agreed to the embargo. A number refused to sign the distributor's waivers and reviewed the film ahead of schedule. Reviews of the film published so far here have been mixed but generally positive.

In place of their usual reviews, some German broadsheets have printed articles protesting the embargo policy. The Berliner Morgenpost compared Paramount to the aliens in the film, looking to "achieve world domination."

The embargo on reviews for the Tom Cruise tentpole comes straight from Paramount in the U.S. and has been rolled out in Europe by distributor United International Pictures.

According to Rob Friedman, vice chairman of the Paramount Motion Picture Group, "Bascially, it has pretty much been the policy on all our movies (to embargo reviews until opening day). Because of the movie's Wednesday opening and the early premieres, we have been asking everyone to honor review dates around the world, because we don't want to put anyone at a disadvantage."

Consumer press review embargoes are standard policy for all Paramount films in the U.S. (Trade reviews occasionally run earlier when the studio chooses to run so-called "quote ads" in its advertising.) The studio has extended that policy for "War of the Worlds," which is its largest ever worldwide day-and-date release.

There has been no protest by critics in other countries, some of whom are accustomed to such embargoes.

The German association also criticized the security measures undertaken at the first press screening of "War of the Worlds" on June 14 in Berlin. For the first time at such a screening, the distributor filmed the audience as an anti-piracy measure.

The screening sparked a minor uproar in the German film press, with some journalists comparing the security measures to the surveillance by the Stasi in communist East Germany.

I don't read reviews until they hit the papers. They don't hit the papers until the day they are released. I really don't see what the big deal is here. I guess France has finally rubbed off on Germany.

I thought the big news was whether Tom Cruise was Katie Holmes' "beard" or if she's his...
