Like a DVR.

Tivo is a particular brand/service.

I know it's kind of rude to ask these kind of questions but what kind of money did he drop on that?

About $1,000 refurbished. (which means it will last about a year) He got a cheapo dell 99 dollar monitor, hoping to get a better one in a year. I think he got a pretty good deal on it. Its a Pentium 3.2 with half a gig of RAM with a good graphic card. Its also got a 250 MB hard disk.
We haven't really tried out the DVR yet, he's recording lost right now, and we plan to record on DVD all our favorite shows.

Yup. I got a TiVo. I love it, record, fast forward past commercials. I never miss much of anything and I can watch what I want and when I want to watch it. I've seen the ones that have it all, TiVo service with DVD recorders built-in. Also seen the cable box with DVR capabilty.

For mine I just paid the one time fee and I was set up. That was it. Once the price goes down I'll want to eventually pick up one of those all-in-one's.

Lesse.

My 1st DVR was a Happauge(sp?) WIN DVR on my old Windows 98 comp, back in '99. I used it mostly to make VCD's of shows i'd record.

When TIVO came out, i bought one of those with DirecTV. Ditched it when Microsoft released the Ultimate TV PVR. Mainly because it offered the dual TV signal (record 2 shows at once) that TIVO didn't have at the time.

We just recently switched back to a TIVO/DirecTV box on account of the old Ultimate TV acting buggy and also because DirecTV with TIVO had an unreal deal that guaranteed that along with the lower monthly fee for the service, the box would literally pay for itself. That plus TIVO finally got the record 2 shows at once feature...

The comp i'm on right now has an intervideo WIN DVR too. I mainly use that for when i'm transferring stuff from the PVR consoles onto my comp for DVD burning.

As far as convenience, i'd say the Ultimate TV's features, menu's and ease of use was better than TIVO by a long shot. Ultimate TV was a hell of a lot more user friendly and easier to program only the shows you wanted to see.

Good......we love it. Very easy to use and no more tapes to fuss with. When I was away in Greece it came in real handy.....I didn't miss a second of Entourage.

i'm doing quite fine, thank you.

i own me a cablevision dvr and make sweet, passionate recording love to it on a regular basis.

i have all instances of arrested development and king of the hill set to record, as well as new runs of smallville, sopranos, lost, and several other shows. i also record most of the stuff in high def, cuz it looks so damn purdy.

I have a DVR through Time Warner. Interestingly enough, when the cable guy installed it he told me that I could run the signal from my DVR to my computer and make DVD's that way. So if you guys are into that sort of thing.... I guess you could switch to Time Warner.
