Quote:

DC’s All-Star teams are complete.

And they live up to the name.

According to The New York Times, Frank Miller will write the previously announced All-Star Batman and Robin, which will join All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.

The series will mark Miller’s first return to Batman since The Dark Knight Strikes Again in 2001, and his first take on a more mainstream Batman since 1987’s “Batman: Year One,” which originally ran in DC's regular Batman series. The creator pairing also marks the first time Lee will work with Miller.

As Newsarama previously reported, the idea behind the All-Star line isn’t to spin the characters into a new timeline, a new universe, or a new continuity, rather, the creators are telling stories set in a contemporary period that both builds on the histories of the respective characters, while remaining fresh and as timeless as possible. These are books that DC hopes, will pull people in who maybe haven’t read a Batman or Superman story in a while – if ever. These versions and stories, while not “dumbed down” at all, will bring to the page what’s pure about the character – the iconic characteristics.

In the case of All-Star Batman, Robin is Dick Grayson, rather than the current, in-continuity Tim Drake. And Miller’s story will focus on the relationship between Grayson and his mentor.

As Miller said, “This is Dick Grayson's initiation and he's dealing with a very stern teacher. Batman is a hard teacher - unforgiving. Brutal. At the same time, Grayson is watching Batman come into his full power. Me and Jim Lee get to play with all of DC's toys. It'll be a romp. It'll be a lot of fun. I plan on raiding DC's treasury of characters. There won't be a Black Canary or a Wonder Woman unused.”

The deal was hammered out by Batman Group Editor Bob Schreck, who said: This is quite an honor and, needless to say, a fairly daunting task that DC has bestowed upon me. Being able to help these incredibly talented creators bring their amazing tales to life on the comics page is going to be one heck of a ride, no doubt. I can't wait until the readers get to see what's in store for them.”

According to the Times, All-Star Batman is slated to begin in July.

I refuse to prejudge this either way.
Apart from the art, which will look pretty on first glance but actually bit sorely lacking.

If this is the Frank Miller who wrote "Batman Year One", this will be great.

If this is the Frank Miller who wrote "the Dark Knight Strikes Again," God help us all.

Funny how Morrie said there would no obscure characters in DC All-Stars and Miller kinda says the opposite.

Miller only mentioned Black Canary - so we don't really know how obscure he is going to get!

Maybe Baldie meant that no obscure characters will get thier own all-star title!

I love you, mxy!

The reference by Miller to obscure DC characters causes me to pause. This is similar to what he said in an interview about DKSA. We should hope that Miller isn't in the same frame of mind.

Call me crazy but I still have faith in Miller!

But one more fuck up on such a monumental scale will definitely change this!

I agree, but I kind of think he's over superheroes.

I think he signs up for these things on the promise of huge wads of cash, but doesn't give it much quality control.

DKSA was positively Silver Age.

If this All Star line is meant to be accessible to new readers and not rely on DC continuity, to be DC's answer to the Ultimate line... is raiding DC's treasury of characters and leaving no stone unturned really the way to go?

Perhaps when DC said "Frank Miller" they meant to say "Jeph Loeb."

I've always considered Frank Miller to be somewhat over-rated. He's good at setting the tone of a story, but in terms of dialogue and pacing, he comes off as weak.

I liked part 1 of "DKR," Parts 2 and 3 were good, but Part 4 felt very incoherent. "Born Again" was excellent, but even that had it's weak points.

As for DKSA, that's a good half-hour of my life I'd like to have back.

hmm....

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 1st post-DKR's Miller Batman story. There were high expectations on that one as well. and he failed to deliver on that one too.

"Spawn/Batman" anyone?

The last time Lee did Batman, the end result was a loser.

But Lee teamed up with Miller...ugh. As I've said in the past, Miller did more to ruin Batman for me than any of the morons in Hollywood, and from the sounds bites I've heard about Batman being the teacher from hell...no thanks. I'm sick of One-Dimensional Jerk Batman™. I'm not in the mood for more of the same.

The Englehart/Rogers reunion...that might be worth checking out. Those guys had Batman down cold.

Oh, I'm not letting Loeb off the hook. He hasn't written a decent comic since before "Our Worlds at War."
