The Angry Bald Cop's Back, baby!!!!:

When "The Shield" made its debut four years ago, critics and fans quickly glommed on to the edgy cop drama , heralding it as the next "The Sopranos" -- except with crooked cops instead of loveable but violent gangsters.

This was quite a triumph for FX, the little basic cable network that could. For so long, the Fox-owned network grappled to carve out an identity with crude attempts at male wrestling and gratuitous "Man Show" type fare.

But "The Shield" gave the network legitimacy and created a star out of Michael Chiklis, who was previously best known for his polar-opposite role on the family-friendly ABC drama "The Commish." Chiklis won his first Emmy for his performance as "The Shield's" Vic Mackey, a corrupt but endearing cop.

And then, like most things cool, "The Shield" cooled off and buzz became less audible.

That is, until now. "The Shield" is in its fourth season and the whole world seems to know because acting legend Glenn Close has been added to the roster. Her addition alone makes tonight's season premiere a TV event.

How great is it to have an Academy-Award nominated actress join a basic cable show's cast? The answer, in a word, is very. You can add this to the list of "wow, really?" TV castings that include Gary Sinese with his own "C.S.I.", James Caan with an NBC drama and Annette Bening doing an episode of "The Sopranos."

With all such castings -- particularly those for ongoing roles -- there is so much potential to disappoint. Don't worry, just like Sinese and Caan, Close is anything but disappointing. In the first three episodes of the season, the star of films such as "Fatal Attraction" and "Dangerous Liaisons" is as complex and intriguing as her counterpart Chiklis.

As Capt. Monica Rawling, Close replaces outgoing captain David Aceveda (Benito Martinez), who is moving on to city council. In the meantime, Rawling gets stuck with Vic, whom Aceveda has prevented from getting transferred, and Det. Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder), who wanted to be captain and could have been if she hadn't angered the district attorney.

"One happy family, huh," Rawling says to Wyms in the first episode after Vic and Aceveda almost come to blows when Vic finds out Aceveda blocked his transfer.

"Oh, yeah, you hit the jackpot," Wyms says.

Why'd Vick want a transfer?

everything was all good up until Season 3. It was still good, but that sickening crap where Aceveda was forced to suck that fools cock was disgusting

looking forward to it, shame it'll be another 6 months+ before the UK gets it

We'll have to see, but I would assume it has something to do with the near-disintergration of the strike team last year.

Great episode tonight. Glenn is a shot in the arm for the cast as expected. Looks like Vic is going to head up something even bigger than the Strike Team after all. I hope Lem comes back to the Barn. He only left because of Shane. I think Vic and Ronnie would welcome him back.

As for Shane, I have to give Walton and Mike credit for the acting in that last scene. Not only was Shane's last-minute appearance a surprise, you could feel the tension in the room. These two will NOT be friends again. Matter of fact, my money is on Vic busting him for something at season's end.

Yes.

I had a scary thought. Lem isn't there to pull Vic back anymore.

That's dangerous.

I have a feeling that one of two things could happen here:

1. Shane, being an incompent thug, gets in too deep, gets caught and tries to turn "state's evidence" on Vic and the strike team;

2. Vic, wanting to go straight, realizes that pinning everything on Shane could be a way to clear his name.

Or some variation thereof.

Spoilers

I thought things were fucked up before. Almost everybody is still on a downward spiral. Aceveda is showing some real personal problems, Vic still can't seem to get his shit back together. Oh and then there is Shane who has to have lost his mind.

It was nice to see Lem running with Vic and Ronnie again, I hope he comes back on board for the new anti-drug and gang unit. Also Dutch and Vic's soon to be ex-wife seem like they get along well. Nothing good can come of that.

i just finished watching the first 4 seasons of the shield, via netflix.

there are a few shows i was always interested in getting into, but just never had the time or felt i was starting too late or whatever. so, this summer, i made a concerned effort to get through the shield.

16 dvds later, i've seen the first 55 (or whatever) episodes, and i frickin love the show. very addicting.

glen close definitely brought an elevated level of acting to the series, which can be noticeably ... weak at times.

but the dialog and the plots are always very top notch, very compelling.

season 5 is, unfortunately, not yet available on dvd, and has no current release date, but i can't wait for it.

yes. yes it is. season 6 doesn't start til 2007, tho. and season 7, the reported final, doesn't start til 2008. so now, all i can do is wait until season 5 is on dvd, too.

next stop for me now is rescue me, season 1, disc 1.

then, hopefully by the time i'm done with that, "its always sunny in philadelphia" will be on dvd, too.

Sunny is a great show. Even more greater with Devito.

Season one of Rescue Me was 65% shit. It was wayyy too cliche and ended in some weak music video every week.

So besides being cliche all episodes were really also short as well.

Season two was a drastic improvement. In writing and performance.

The Shield arguably the best cop show ever. It pulls you in and makes you qustion you values.

I think season two ands five were the strongest. Season two being the better of them SPOILERS..........................................................................................

I watched the first couple of episodes of I'ts Always Sunny and thought it was kind of lame. Another show that did nothing but set up the same, predictably "un-PC" jokes, and expect you to laugh simply because of how "un-PC" it was(like Mind of Mencia).

The second season, however, has been a revelation. Obviously, the purpose of the show is still to offend by tackling sensitive issues, but they've done it with far more tact and wit. Plus, the acting has improved tenfold.

ASIP is just an Arrested Development clone with different setting/characters and slightly better writing.

Yeah. It's the same schtick. Just take out the background laughter and everyone expects everything to be funny since it's labeled as a comedy.

It works the other way around too. Label something a comedy when it doesn't have a single attempt at a joke in it, but put in the laughter and it's still considered clever.

I did the same thing. Everyone here got me hooked on it and I watched the first couple seasons in a couple weeks. I'm pretty sure FX will re-air at least the last season before the new one starts up early next year.
