ok, i'll start. these are the first few things i'll try to address here:

  • i hate the thread rating system. i think its unnecessary, and yet, it can't simply be switched off.
  • i hate the thread views column. same deal.
  • i hate the post icons and want them removed.
  • gramelins have to be updated, but thats no problem.
  • i dont like the menu in the upper right too much.
  • i miss seeing the names of those online automatically

well, for starters, my MAD COW DISEASE thread from the temporary board isn't here.

the excessive amount of steps to post a reply was also quite sucky as is the general layout of the butons to send a reply.

The whole ability to reply to anyone can be cumbersome.
But then again, everyone is doing it.

I do like the Profile Screen. Better than UBB.classic.
But "Home" brings you to www.robkamphausen.com

Views are not too necessary for this kind of board, I read somewhere that you could turn them off in your profile but I couldn't find it.
I read you could take the "Who's Online" Screen and add it as a sidebar (separate table). That should be relatively easy to manage and mod...

Nice thing, if you screw up and have to go back, you don't lose the text you typed. I hate that in UBB.classic

Crappy thing, Sometimes I'm logged in, sometimes I'm suddenly not, anybody see that?

Well done on the quick turnaround. I find it hard to get anything accomplished this time of year.

There's a lot to get used to, so I'll wait until i'm familiar with it and see if anything still bugs me then.

I had a heck of a time just logging in so I could POST to these new boards.

I had to use the "forgot-my-password" option, and request my password be e-mailed to me. It wasn't the original paasword I had from the old boards, it was a "temporary" password (whatever that means), but at leas now I have a password so I can log in.

The main thing I don't like is the template for the new boards.

ROB: Is it just a matter of me changing the "Classic" (old DC boards style) message boards template, so I can have the same template as I had on the old RKMB boards for the last 6 months or so ?
I hope if you don't have those templates right now, that you can add them to these new boards.

On a VERY minor point, I also don't like the new smilies and emoticons as much. They're fuzzy and less clear.

glad t'see y'all made it some notes:

  • my graemlins will be brought back, no problem. just haven't had a chance yet.
  • board colors and such can be changed. there are already a few different templates/styles to pick from, in the "my home" area. i'll re-add the DC one after christmas.
  • i'll look into the login issues

i've started to like the "reply to anyone" feature. especially in the big ass political threads, it helps ID whose post you're responding to.

what took longer? cantcha you just click on "reply" like on the old boards?

Quote:

i agree, its a bit weird having the "reply" button within the posts themselves. i'll see about reworking it.

and back atcha!

the whole move to the new board system really is buggin me out. not that i like any of you, mind you, but i dont wanna [censored] up the community with a chaotic change (we web nerds refer to it as "pull a dcmb").

i've got my beef with this system, too, but i'm hoping the majority of my problems will dissolve over time (i.e; getting used to the new "reply" button location).

the more things we discuss in here that you'd all like changed, the more things i can work on to make sure everyone is happy.

and how!

You don't have to automatically preview your post when you reply. There's a little box you can check.

OK, things I've noticed so far:

When I first attempted to reply to a post, I had to log-in and rather than being taken back to the post I was replying to, I was taken to my profile page.

I think the thing I like least about these boards is the big brother aspect - the way you can see how many times a post has been viewed and the way you can call up a list of members on-line and find out what post they're reading. It's creepy and totally unecessary. There's a similar option on the boards at mojo4music.com and it's always annoyed me.

Thanks for responding, Rob.

I already clicked on "MY HOME" at the top of the screen, and changed my password back to what it was previously.

I also went into "MY HOME" and selected "DISPLY PREFERENCES", and switched to BLUE/BLACK(LARGE FONTS), which is I guess as closest to what I'm used to, till you have a chance to make the switch.

I also clicked "off", in the PREVIEW POSTS (ON OR OFF) in the list of preference options.

And one that I found particularly annoying, it defaults to 10 posts per topic page, but I changed it back to 25 per page. At least the option is there.

One thing I like is, unlike the previous boards where you could view your own or another's "LAST 50 POSTS", on these new boards you can go back and see every last post, ever !

I looked back and saw it at least goes back 200 posts on mine. I've seen this prior, on other boards, and I like it.

~

I'm curious about one thing in particular, Rob. My apologies if you discussed it elsewhere, but what did you dislike about the old boards, that compelled you to seek out another online location for RKMB ?

Two things:
1. There should be more threads per page.

2. I never thought I'd say this, but I kinda miss the personalized messages after making posts or logging out and stuff... "yer leavin? screw you! im gay!"

well, 2 things happened at once.

1) i changed hosts. that means i took all my web site crap and moved it from a company called powweb to a company called lunar pages. powweb caused a significant amount of the problems for these boards over the past few years, including almost every downtime we had. i got tired of it and left. ike turner, be damned.

2) i switched message boards programs from classic to threads. initially, i was making the change because classic produces TONS of files -- 20,000 for my boards. that made things slow and cumbersome and caused me to delete a few threads, because powweb started enforcing a file limit.

lunar pages has no such limit, but threads still runs significantly smoother and faster. ... plus, i already bought the license

Some threads titles have a really annoying gay blue heading.
The "preview message" thing shouldn't be default. I mean, who here previews messages?
After editing a post there shouldn't be a message that says "post edited...". It's rascist.
I'd prefer if the "reply" and "new thread" buttons were on the top and bottom of the page instead of being in every post. Only the quote and edit thingies should be in every post.

One thing I miss is the option of enlarging the text size (in the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser -- go to "View" then "Text Size" and click on "Largest"), as I get terrible eye-strain trying to read this board's extremely small font. Why doesn't it allow text size to be enlarged? You've just got to change that, Rob.

With the old boards there was an option to have a personalized template with a larger font for people like me who HATE tiny font sizes. Any chance of something like that for these boards?

BTW, in case it sounds like I'm complaining too much -- thanks for all the work you've put into these boards, Rob. I know you get all the complaints and little of the glory, but without your hard work we'd all be posting somewhere else.

Yay! I just realized that there are templates with larger fonts in the "My Home" section of this board -- excellente!

Another thing I'd like to see is the option for us moderators to be able to make some posts into "headlines" (or this board's equivalent to that).

Plus, get rid of the [censored] censor, man.

Thanks for the answer to the ultimate question regarding these boards, Rob.

One other complaint I have is that --evenb when maximizing my screens, the entire text of a topic page isn't visible, and I have to scroll and move it around to read all the text. That's not something I ever had to do before here, except maybe once in a long while where the format of the page was screwed up by a super long link or photo-image posted.

Hopefully that's something easily fixable.

~

I also don't like the time limit for editing a post. I guess you have 15 or 30 minutes to edit it it, or it becomes permanent and unchangeable.

Especially for long posts where it can take multiple edits to get the [quote:] and [/quote:] right, and all the quotes inside quotes of quotes. Pain in the ass to do before. But at least you could edit until you got it right.

Same with photos and images inserted in posts. Or just to go back and fix typos and syntax errors, when you see them.

Or to edit out comments bashing Bush for not capturing Saddam Hussein or WMD's, if the U.S. military suddenly captures them.

It seems to be this:

You can edit ONCE, but if you try to edit your post a second time, it won't, and you get a message of "YOU'VE EXCEEDED YOUR MAXIMUM EDIT TIME, and can no longer change it.

I don't know if this has been covered yet, but some of the thread topics in the index page are highlighted in sort of a neon-blue/turquoise that's almost unreadably bright.

Otherwise, looks good!
