INFINITE CRISIS #1
Written by Geoff Johns, art by Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning, covers by Jim Lee and Sandra Hope and George Pérez
It's finally here: the comics event so massive that it built over the first half of 2005, through Countdown, Day of Vengeance, Rann/Thanagar War, Villains United and The OMAC Project. Prepare for the dawn of the DCU's darkest day in Infinite Crisis, a 7-issue miniseries written. Surrounded by their most fearsome enemies, the world's greatest heroes are divided within and without.
DC's icons -- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman -- are joined by Nightwing, Supergirl, Donna Troy, Superboy, Robin, Wonder Girl, Green Lantern, the Flash and more as they face their most dire hour. What happens next will destroy friendships and lives, dictating the direction of the universe for the next generation!
Years in the making, the greatest event to hit the DCU in over two decades is about to explode. This issue will ship with covers by Lee and Williams (50 percent) and Pérez (50 percent).
40 pages, $3.99, in stores on Oct. 12.

I love how it says "Years in the making" when infact this story was decided 8 months ago while reviewing sales figures.

i think its just "years" since the previous continuity-altering event, of which the last major one was ...what, zero hour?
thus, this current continuity has existed for ... geez, 10 years or so (right?) and will culminate in this story.

One of the rumors that came out of comic-con was that the original crisis never ended, and this series will be the "true" ending. If thats true, then it has been "years in the making".

It's a shame when ten years of continuity seems like a long time... especially seeing as how it took almost fifty years for DC to need one continuity altering event... and then they just got repair happy and started fixing things every few years...

Heh...
It rebooted The Legion, mutilated the Hawkman history/existence, and created the "10 Years Ago" rule...

I liked Zero Hour. The main plot was okay, and the crossover issues were 1 month long and didn't require knowledge of the main story. Just some fun stories.

Okay, I'm still confused. Quote:
Prometheus said: It rebooted The Legion
Was this a reboot reboot or just a change of the lineup and such? If everything started over and continuity was thrown out the window, as with Crisis on Infinite Earths, I consider that a reboot. If things were being "shaken up," characters died, and/or other "new and exciting characters" were introduced, or a new creative team with "a brand new vision" came aboard, I don't call that a reboot. That's just a sales ploy.

Again, how? Seriously. It's not that I'm trying to argue the point. I really never read Zero Hour, so I don't know.
Was the character reset or was stuff just added that made his origin more confusing. Again, the latter is not something I'd call a reboot. That's just a bad idea.
I think that the problem is that, as a techie, I have a much harder definition of the word "reboot" than most. I honestly think the definition has been loosened over the last few decades by creators and companies to instigate reader excitement and, thus, sales.

No, it rebooted them, starting their universe over again. There was even a "last issue" of the original continuity where their original universe fades out in a white 'Crisis Wave'. A true reboot.

It merged the Golden Age, Silver Age, and modern 'Hawkworld' Hawkmen into a single being. It's not easy to explain, and I wouldn't neccessarily call it a 'reboot' as such. As I said, more of a "mutilation".

It established that characters like Superman, Batman, and the like have only been active for a decade. Of course, that really cramped Dick Grayson's timeline. But, whatever...

over all, zero hour wasn't the continuity bastard that crisis was, but it had its minor lil "my way" moments -- all of which was written into the storyline. the then-really-crazy hal jordan / parallax character was the one doin all the fixin up, going through time (and space!) righting things he thought was wrong, and screwin up a bit of time in the process.
it did make for a very cool "issue #0" idea, but... many of those were crap. some, like one of the batman ones, even contained a new timeline, to detail how batman's career could be entirely squished into 10 years, as mentioned above.
for example, the several year long knightfall-quest-end saga was now wrapped up in a tidy 6 months. broken back? feh! and robins were zoomin in and out like nascar!
other such inexplicable changes included bruce wayne no longer knowing who killed his parents -- joe chill was "undone."
huzzah!

I as well liked Zero Hour, overall. And besides, it help lead-in to James Robinson's Starman, which was a damn fine story.
I am looking forward to Infinite Crisis as well, and I'd say they had probably been planning something like this for at least 18 months. If the rumors prove true, then the foundations for this were laid in Titans/ Young Justice: Graduation Day which was about 3 years ago.

Actually, Starman was already in the works due to the success of Golden Age. They just used Zero Hour to boost it along.

that's just the nature of comic book time.

it wasn't undone, just made unclear by Batman's visit to a parallel timeline where he went right after Chill murdered a young Bruce Wayne instead of his parents. There Chill was sick and had lost his gun months before. So, the story with Chill wasn't undone, Batman just had no way of really knowing.

I think the "years in the making" line comes from the fact that the seeds for this story were first sewn in the opening arc of Superman/Batman. Yes, I know, that was only two years ago, but it's still more than one year. Isn't DC logic wonderful? It might go back further, but I'm not sure. And just to clarify, while Zero Hour set the "10 Year Rule," that was extended to 12 by a Secret Files issue that came out in 2000. It's also generally accepted that 4-5 years of real time equals one comic book year, so technically we're at 13 years now. ... Yeah, I know. Too much time on my hands.
Bring on the ladies!

though i'd normally agree (despite... y'know... getting all my books for free...) i think DC has actually, been really cool about their latest "spread over everything" tales.
