From correspondents in New Orleans: EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.
Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.
When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.
Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."
With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

How many people do you think he could have rescued in a boat already full with people Jim?
What was the need for him to have a personal photographer on board?
Why did someone with his amount of money not buy a decent boat if he was serious about rescuing people?

yeah, even if the intent was good hearted, which I think it was, Penn is still a complete idiot taking an entire boat full of people with him, and leaving room for maybe 1 or 2 people in the boat. How can you rescue people under those conditions?

Sean Penn's not the only person to take a boat down to New Orleans or the Gulf Coast to help rescue people. He's the only one to take a leaky boat with a bad engine and fill it full of people who know jack all about rescueing people but everything about kissing his ass and taking publicity snap shots of him. It was a dumb fuck idea, and I can't really see how charitable it is to go motoring up to a bunch of people in a boat full of your personal ball washers and only save one or two victims because there's no more room.

As far as Penn goes. If his intentions were true then he wouldn't have brought a photographer. Plain and simple. He could have done so much more by simply writing a check so the money could have funded competent people to do the rescuing. There are plenty of liberals doing a good job.
