The 16th Century (1500-1600) was a little over 400 years ago.

That's like a US Civil War epic being touted as "set 140 years ago, prior to the late 20th-century Imperialist Neocon conquest of the United States of America".

AICN Sees Mel Gibson's APOCALYPTO At Fantastic Fest

Just got in from the FANTASTIC FEST screening of APOCALYPTO tonight. From seeing the film for a second time in the same day. After the second screening, I have to say it plays even better.

The themes about how the industrial needs of a civilization, even a primitive one - lay the groundwork for moral, societal and physical decay really begin to come out. Then there's just the pure B-movie pulp of an action film. I heard at least 5 people afterwards say that it was a Mayan Western. Louis Black, editor of the Austin Chronicle was heard to say, many times, that "It's like a Terrence Malick film with a B-movie Plot!" - and if you know Louis, you know how heartfelt and excited that was.

One of the reasons that Louis Black and I are friends and have known each other for the last 30 years is that... We love High Art and Low Art. And most of all we love it when the two converge. This is a B-movie with the soul of a great artist and the production values of the best of Hollywood.

Watching it the second time - the temp score kills me, but he's got James Horner working on a score that will use 100% primative instruments. He's set to trim some more out, and man... to hear this with the final sound mix and color graded and with the fx in. I just can't wait. The film received a standing ovation from the audience and it was absolutely earned.

Can't wait to hear from the others that were there. Send in your reviews, positive or negative to Harry@AintItCool.com - What a fun night!

I tend to agree. It won't appeal to the Christian right, the way that "Passion of the Christ" did, and most every one else will be turned off by both (a) the fact its a historic movie with subtitles; (b) Gibson's recent anti-semetic rant and DUI arrest.

A Mel Gibson "historic" movie is an oxymoron, but I intend to see this. Looks somewhat interesting.

'Apocalypto' Is More 'Mad Max' Than Mayan

With the subtlety of several thousand flying mallets and arrows, here comes Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto," a two-hour plus torture-fest so violent that women and children will be headed to the doors faster than you can say "duck" when the film opens on Dec. 8.

Indeed, "Apocalypto" is the most violent movie Disney has ever released, with so much blood spurting out of orifices that even Martin Scorsese would blush.

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to see heads and hearts removed without anesthesia, then this is the movie for you. "Grey's Anatomy" it is not.

What it is, Gibson says, is the story of a civilization in transition, as the Mayans 500 years ago fought among themselves until visitors from Europe arrived by ship and spelled their doom.

Unfortunately, though, that part of the movie lasts maybe three minutes and takes place at the very end.

"Apocalypto" really is a video game, a sort of "Survivor" set in what would become the Mayan ruins as we know them today.

The action is often cartoonish, and the dialogue — which is all spoken in some ancient dialect with subtitles — is often preposterous.

In one scene, after what seems like the umpteenth bloody killing, one Mayan quips to another and the translation is, "He's f—-ed."

Gibson directs some of the film like "Braveheart" and some of it like "The Three Stooges." There is little poetry to his imagination

Sometimes, the result of this is a vivid portrait of death. For example, a jaguar eats a man's head, and masticates. Half-dressed Mayans are shot through the head, heart and chest with arrows and knifed sometimes without notice and almost always in the most gruesome ways possible. Heads roll and bounce, for real, down the long stairs of the Kukulcan Pyramid, or what we now regard the centerpiece of the Mayan ruins.

Not all of "Apocalypto" is awful. Rudy Youngblood gives an athletic performance as Jaguar Paw, the hero who must save his pregnant wife and child from warring factions after he hides them in a deep pit.

Youngblood is quite literally the only person who emerges from the movie unscathed, somehow not dying or requiring medical attention after sustaining injuries that would kill most men.

He almost succeeds in making Jaguar Paw a completely sympathetic figure, too, by giving him nearly no dialogue. But then Gibson and screenwriter Farhad Safinia let him jump the shark (or the jaguar, in this case) and make hoary proclamations to the artfully designed sky. Even Youngblood seems like he's going to wince with embarrassment.

Of course, "Apocalypto" arrives with a lot of baggage. Gibson — an admitted alcoholic who denies being anti-Semitic despite evidence to the contrary — is kind of a marked man.

He refuses to answer a lot of questions, and he is confining his publicity for the movie to safe havens with Disney and ABC, which the studio owns (I dare Jay Leno to ask him about this summer's incidents when he appears on that show on opening night).

But more than those questions, there are new ones: What kind of man is so interested in making this kind of violent movie? What motivates him?

"Apocalypto" surpasses "The Passion" in every way as a movie about pain, flagellation and wounding. The grotesqueries are almost numbing, and at some point they become laughable.

But all the while, you're thinking, what's the point here? If "Apocalypto" was supposed to be about that transitional civilization, where is it? After two hours and several minutes of squirming and covering eyes, you start to think that "Apocalypto" exists just to show violence for itself. The point is lost.

Even though he works for the Fox, this critic is a gay Jew who has never hidden his complete contempt for Gibson. As such, I don't know how accurate this review is. In any event, I still see this as not performing well at the box office.

And if the movie bombs at the box office, Mel can always comfort himself by telling himself its because "the Jews" control Hollywood.

Oddly enough, I still think Gibson could made an awesome version of Richard Adams's Shardik.

Animalman, you read the book, right? The whole 'primitive culture' thing...I dunno, I think it could work.

Actually, most people couldnt give a fuck about whether a film star is a drunk or racist!

Unless famous people are kiddy fiddlers, the movie going public really doesnt give a shit!

How many drunks, druggies & just general wankers have had long successful movie careers despite their personal lives!

I for one can't wait to see it. If it gets too violent I can always close my eyes. The way Gibson captures emotion without words being said is worthy of my attention. The violence in passion was tasteful violence whereas the violencei ins ome horror movies well.........if they only attacked the horror movie directors with as much enthusaism and accountability!

yes, nothing says tasteful like beating a god who is a pacifist too a pulp, then nailing them bleeding, to a cross and leaving him to die.

Probably right. Glad I dont give a fuck about any of those viewpoints as I'll see it due to the fact that Gibson is an excellent filmmaker. Which is after all the real reason to see a movie. . .

Huh. Go figure...Mel Wins Friday: #1 'Apocalypto' Bigger Opening Weekend Than 'Braveheart'

Call it a Hollywood shocker: Mel's Apocalypto will have a bigger weekend opening than his Braveheart. Despite scandal, an R-rating, subtitles because of an ancient dialect, no stars, and direct competition from movieland AAA-listers Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz, Gibson's Mayan epic won Friday's matinees and evenings

Mel's movie took in nearly $6 million Friday for what's expected to be at least a $15 mil, and possibly $16 mil, weekend total -- exceeding Disney's hopes for the box office gross. That easily beats Mel's Braveheart, which made $9.9 mil for Fri-Sat-Sun when it opened in 2,037 theaters during Memorial Weekend back in 1995 ($12.9 mil for the four-day holiday) and went on to make $75.6 mil in the U.S. and $210.4 mil worldwide, helped by winning the Best Picture Oscar. Based on today's matinees, the No. 2 spot went to Sony's The Holiday (in 2,610 playdates), a date movie from director-writer Nancy Meyer

    The movie was pretty good.

Extremely violent and all that but still, Mel shoots a pretty good flick. And the nobody actors were excellent, IMO.

Looks like the film was Number One for the weekend.

I guess we now have proof positive that the Jews don't control Hollywood after all.

I heard it has more gore than all his other movies combined. Even The Man Without a Face!

Okay......that was "THE PASSION" this was the Apocalypto. Maybe I'm being too harsh.......I mean ya know you go from Christ to a pagan culture so its gonna be shocking but dang....

Its like Gibson was thinking, 'I'm going to give the critics what they really want. They think Passion was horrific, they should just wait for my next movie. bwahahahah!"

    ***************SPOILERS!***************************************
You've been warned people! No bellyaching, elisa sucks threads, or other such nonsense allowed beyond this point.

DYING to see the new movie, accompanied by my ever so charming boyfriend going to see it this past weekend on the epically huge movie screen. The movie started out well enough with a hunting scene followed by a funny tribal hunting moment. Typical life of a happy hunter tribe UNTIL *bum ba bum bum* some other indian guys show up looking all fearful seeking, "a new beginning." This makes the Jaguar Paw guy (yeah his real name) antsy. He has a nightmare about the tribal guy warning him something bad was gonna happen and he wakes up to find the barking dog becoming still and quiet like it was killed. Urging his pregnant wife and child up, then throws them into a convenient pit/cave/well hoping he has enough time while other tough looking indian dudes ravage the village capturing the men and women.

The main character, tribal leader's son Jaguar (I'll call him Jaggys), fights back against them and sadly is captured (obviously or there's no story) and watches as his father's throat is slit open *EWWWWWWW* SO did not have to show that. Then they go walking through the villages all tied on the little poles to a place where "The blood drains down the earth" or something like that.

Then they get to the Mayan city and it shows the filth, the girls getting auctioned off, and the people are freakishly thirsty for blood. The guys are bathed in blue paint, shoved through an opening where paintings/wall drawings show human sacrifice, taken to the top of the temple while they watch as a couple of guys get sacrificed, the heart ripped out of them, the head chopped off as it tumbled down the stairs and then mountained on a pole, and YES they showed it freakin' all! The ray of hope was that Jaggys *dum da dum* decides to fight back as was prophesied by a random little chick in the movie to the bad guys. Throwing him on the altar, an epic eclipse happens and they decide not to sacrifice anymore but it gets worse.....

The prisoners get led to this open field where they are told to run for their lives while the guard guys throw spears and stuff at them. They make it then they are free to go (yeah right!) And yes.........it shows them pierce their bodies, blood ooze out, etc. Then Jaggy steps up and is going to fight to get back to his wife and kiddo gets glazed by an arrow, rips it out and runs for his life through a cornfield after killing the main guard's son until he stumbled and fell into a huge pit full of decaying bodies (NASTY!), where he continues to run being chased by both men and wild animals. In the midst of the jaguar chasing him, a guard jumps out in front of him, and his throat is torn and all the nastiness is shown (nothing left to the imagination), where they have to beat and tear the panther or jaguar off of the guard guy. GROSSINESS!!!!! The chase continues and we fast forward to Jaggys diving off into this epic waterfall that he miraculously survives and yells back at the guys, "Know your role. This was my grandaddys forest, my daddys forest and heck yeah its my forest so come and get it." (paraphrased of course ;P ) To which they all dive, a guy gets his head bashed into a rock, and the other guys chase after him again. This time, Jaggy sets up a trap to catch the head guard guy who gets this huge piercing trap coming down through him where once again it shows his body dangling off of it, but one of the worst scenes came from when Jaggy fought the guard who killed his dad. They dive at each other and Jags takes the ax and drives it into the guards head. It shows his head splitting open, blood draining out.....NASTINESS!

But hey........the chase continues until Jags collapses on the beach and two guard guys are left behind him, but when they are going to kill him they look out to the ocean where they see the conquistadors coming to shore. Jaggys gathers himself up, saves his wife who had arleady had their baby in an epic rainstorm that literally almost drowned her, her little boy, and had her baby in water which they showed!

The ending shows a now fully restored and patched up Jags, wife, kids, all making their way to the forest peaking back at the conquistators and wisely deciding not to deal with them but go deep into the forest and start over, the only remaining villagers.

Too much blood, violence, and I thought the plot kinda sucked! I wanted more of a plot darn it! After the movie, you just wanted to surround yourself with happy things and pray your dreams didn't mirror the horrific violence the movie showed.

Spare yourself the horror, the violence, and go see something happy!

So if it's God being tortured it's fine, but if it's anyone else it's crap. Nice fanatical thinking, Penissa!
