I'd been wondering what'd be next now that all the Star Wars movies have been turned into LEGO games. Looks like I have my answer:

The next licensed LEGO game from veteran UK developer, Traveller's Tales will be based on the massive DC Comics superhero, Batman, CVG can exclusively reveal today.
Just days prior to the release of the next entry in massively successful LEGO Star Wars series, CVG's investigative reports have learned that work has already begun on a franchise follow-up, staring the Caped Crusader in a block-busting adventure through a LEGO brick Gotham city.
No further details were offered from our sources, though we're sure that - considering how much fantastic fun the first two LEGO Star Wars games were - Batman's blocky-debut is certainly something to look forward to. While we would've probably opted for something more in the vein of LEGO Eastenders, the Dark Knight's deep universe and wide-array of characters and villains perfectly lends itself to the Lego spirit, and we're bursting to pilot a block-built Batmobile through the Gotham streets.
When we contacted Traveller's Tales the studio as expected declined to comment on LEGO Batman, although further delving led us to development director, Jonathan Smith who when asked about the game told us that considering the studio's long running partnership with LEGO, "we will definitely will be making more LEGO games in the future."
Exciting stuff indeed. We will of course shine the big, CVG spotlight skyward when more word on LEGO Batman reaches our ears.
In my opinion, Harry Potter would have been a more natural fit to turn into a LEGO game, but this looks like it could be cool too.

What's the deal with LEGO games? They're basically normal games with midget versions of the characters.

Basically, they're games that are fairly easy to play through, but the real chasllenge is collecting everything. Once you've played through a level in "story" mode, you can play the same level with different characters that you've unlocked who have different abilities and can get to places in the level that you couldn't get to in story mode. The games are fun with a quirky sense of humor and a TON of replayability.

I like a quirky sense of humor.  Not too hot at video games here....  The Star Wars and Batman Lego games look pretty cool though!

Lego Star Wars is funny, the final cutscene is so wrong, yet with the crap that was Episode III it was so right. I haven't really played the new one yet. But Lego Batman? I agree with Notwedge, Harry Potter would have been a better fit.

None of the reasons you gave had anything to do with the LEGO theme. LEGO Star Wars is a fun game, and the only thing you'll be missing if you lose the lego theme is the novelty and perhaps the quirky sense of humor.
So if it were up to me, I'd rather they just make a good Batman game using all the elements that made Lego Star Wars' gameplay fun(the reasons you stated). Fuck novelty and fuck being quirky. THE Batman does not have a quirky sense of humor. My virtual simulation of stalking the streets of gotham terrorizing criminals is going to be ruined if I have to do it as a midget made up of lego blocks.
P.S.
I think they're just missing the point. Maybe they're making a batman lego game because they thought lego star wars was succesful because it's LEGO! which isn't the case. It was successful because it's Star Wars and it's a fun game.

the one-line reasoning for the game: its an interactive advertisement.
batman is a product/brand. lego is a product/brand. video games and their respective systems are products/brands. its a product based on a product played on a product, and all three help advertise those products. bastardized marketing strategy at its finest.
the video games, just as the legos, went from star wars to batman because those are the current 1 & 2 franchises for kids (spider-man a distant third)
but even with all that marketing inside, the games are successful because they're actually remarkably well made. simple, straight forward, great graphics and sound, fun to play and fun to replay.
star wars games, like batman games, are often bogged down with too much to do, or having to mash way too many buttons or advance way too far before getting to the enjoyable parts (light sabres, force powers, dueling with vader, etc)
the simplified lego games make it fun right off the bat.

Actually, I thought the games did make use out of the LEGO license. Some puzzles are solved by building things and the environments can be blowed up. Or did I misread the review for the LEGO Star Wars sequel.

A lot of non-lego games have destructive environments and the ability to build things is not that special. It's not even that unique from some rpgs wherein you have to "build" stuff from different raw materials you find in enemy drops.

Yeah, but the conversation suggested that no effort to reflect the LEGO license was made. I think there was some effort, though, despite it's lack of originality.

I think the "real" reason LEGO uses its brand for vidoe games is that kids (parents) don't buy ordinary LEGO as often as they used to, since kids these days prefer to play in front of screen instead of building something with their hands.

I agree with that, Captain!
A friend's nephew ONLY wanted video games for his birthday..and a bike, and he lives in a very bad area and really cannot go far on the bike safely.

When I was a kid, I lived in a very bad area for playing with Legos. The place was infested with leggoons, a bird that eats nothing but lego blocks. Often I would walk into my room to find my castles or pirate ships being devoured by them. It was very traumatic.
