I'm on a guitar solo binge these days, and I'm looking for more songs to listen to. Can you recommend songs that you feel has a really good guitar solo?

Guitar instrumentals don't count, though.

gary hoey band - american made album.

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

Van Halen's "Eruption" is an obvious choice, but I like the intro to "Mean Streets" best. Any guitar work off Van Halen's first four albums is recommended (Van Halen, Van Halen 2, Women And Children First, and Fair Warning). Joe Satriani's "Surfing With The Alien" is a great album. But I dig pretty much everything he does. You can also check out:

Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover (from Ah Via Musicom)

Steve Vai - Passion And Warfare

Kiss My Axe (XMas music done by guitarists)

As for my fave guitar solos, and I make no appology for them all being old school rock n metal as quite frankly thats when guitar solos came into their own:

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird (essential listening)
Metallica - One
Lita Ford - The Ripper
Bon Jovi - Dry county
Fleetwood Mac - The chain
Ten - Name of the rose
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the opera
Joe Satriani - Big bad moon

Thanks, I'm gonna try them out now.

I like the riff on One's outro, but I don't like Kirk Hammet's solo. I mean, sure it's technically proficient, and really fast, but it doesn't sound good to me. It's like it's just difficult and fast for the sake of being difficult and fast. I've got the same complaint about Yngwie.

I just downloaded The God That Failed and I liked the solo there, was Kirk the one doing it?

P.S.

I like the use of hogsqueals a lot. Van Halen uses it effectively, as well as Steve Vai. So does Kenny Wayne Shepard on that stupid blue on black song, and if he actually tries - Billy Corgan.

Malmsteen is great just so long as his solos are within the confines of a song.
Put him on an instrumental track, and he loses it!
That said, Trilogy suite opus 5 is an awesome instrumental track, and one I can honestly say is one of his best pieces of work!

As for the god that failed, Hammett would have been the main guitarist then, yes, but its entirely possible that Hetfield performed some solos!

Recomended Malmsteen stuff is the album he did with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals.
Try Riot in the dungeon or Rising force to see that when restricted to an actual song structure, he calms things down a lot!

I have only heard the Dweezil Zappa version of that.
I think his dad did it first though!

Talking about Dweezil Zappa, he did two versions of the Bee Gees track, Staying alive, one with Ozzy Osbourne on vox & one with Donny Osmond.
While the Ozzy version is great, ya gotta hear the Donny version as it has about 4 or 5 great guitarists performing solos (one might or might not be Eddie Van Halen, but wasnt able to use his real name for legal reasons, but its never been confirmed)

Hendrix was never a big fave of mine but I do like his music.

As far as guitarists go, I prefer Eric Clapton, BB King, and Steve Howe ( of Yes)

I will add this song :

I like Queen's FIRST album best, because it rocked!

Queen - Keep Yourself Alive - Doin' Alright - Liar.

Best three guitar oriented songs on the album!

It's part of the CD of the first G# tour (Satriani, Vai, & Johnson) each guy did a coupl'a tracks on their own and then they did a jam to this tune - and, yes, it's originally a Frank Zappa tune.

Bowie - Moonage Daydream (especially the version from Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture. If you find the soundtrack of that movie, also check out Width of a Circle)
Queen - Check any Queen live album and get the track titled "Guitar solo". In their latest album, Return of the Champions, the solo is followed by Last Horizon, an instrumental track from one of Brian May's solo albums. The album track is pretty lame, but the live version fucking rocks.
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla (but you already have that, RIGHT?)

I got Layla back when it was new in the early 70's on vinyl, need another CD of it now! It ought to have been standard issue when a freshman at college, along with your books and dorm room key!

Smoke on the Water from the Made In Japan album is the BEST version I have ever heard of that song!

Stevie Ray Vaughn "Little Wing"- I know you said that you don't like guitar instrumentals. I have been playing guitar for 15years and I hate most guitar instrumentals, even though I respect the musicianship involved. But, trust me, this rendition of the Hendrix classic is amazing and very accessible.

Metallica "Unforgiven" or "Fade to Black"- While I believe that the frentic pace of the outro solo of "One" contributes to the ambiance of the song and its subject matter, I can see where you feel that Hammett's solo has an almost Malsteem feel. On these two tracks, his guitar sound and style is more emotive, yet he still has a few impressive acrobatics.

Guns N' Roses "November Rain"- It may seem cliche, but it is the song that made me want to learn how to play guitar. Try to watch the video if you can, b/c Slash in front of a church in the middle of nowhere makes it even more epic. Heck while you are at it try listing to "Don't Cry," "November Rain," and "Estranged" in that order if possible. GNR intended them to form a trilogy and while pretentious, the three songs do an excellent job of showcasing Slashes guitar skills. "Civil War" is also worth checking out.

Pink Floyd "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" or "Comfortably Numb"- The minute David Gilmore plays a note on the guitar you know it is him; his guitar sound is immediately recgonizable. These songs are sonic masterpieces and Gilmore's solos take them to the next level. I would also recommend the song "Echos," but given that it is nearly 20min long it is mostly instrumental.

Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" or "Since I've Been Loving You"- It's "Stairway" nuff said, and the second song helps to showcase the fact that at their roots Zeppelin is a blues band.

Pantera "I'm Broken" or "This Love"- If you are in the mood for a quality heavy guitar solo, Dimebag is your man. RIP

I second the song " Shine on You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd!

Hearing the guitar on that song that is an experience that is akin to that of floating in space, watching comets and asteroids fly by, and seeing suns being born from dust and gas.. it's breathtaking!

I generally look for good guitarists rather than just their solos, but ones that can be counted on for great sounding music are people like Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits for classic rock using classical guitar style over traditional blues and Jimi Hendrix (even his mellow stuff is outrageous). You've also gotta include:

Stevie Ray Vaughn (it'll make your dad happy since SRV performed with Bowie):

Neil Young (an underrated guitarist):

Robert Randolph & the Family Band (for something a bit different):

If you're into jam bands, there's always the Allman Brothers Band and Widespread Panic. Panic stuff should be easy to find due to the fact that they allow people to record their live performances (they are much better live than in a studio) and trade tapes. They do a lot of covers as well as performances with other bands. I'd suggest checking out Superstition with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Space Wrangler.

Then, there are, of course, the old goodies like Sweating Bullets by Megadeath, Randy Rhodes' solos on Ozzy's Crazy Train, and Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf.

I've been listening to the Cure a lot recently, and I'm digging the guitar work on "It's Friday, I'm in Love." And, after playing Guitar Hero II, "Message in a Bottle" has some good guitar work as well.
