    2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
    Gone With the Wind (1939)

I agree with some choices (for example: 2001, Good Will Hunting, and American Beauty), haven't seen others (the Red Shoes, Jules and Jim, American in Paris) and think some are off the mark.

Probably the silliest one is the attack on "Gone With the Wind." Its not a movie I enjoy, but the editors pull out the old "its racist" line which ignores the fact that, gasp, the Civil War era South and 1930s America WERE racist.

Clerks was good, Gump is one of my favorites, and most of the justification for many of the choices reflect that everyone who writes for that magazine should be fired and the presses sold as scrap.

Actually give me the presses. I could probably make mad bank on eBay with them.

How did Titanic not make that list?

Holy shit, I can't sit through 30 seconds of that trainwreck.

I think Titanic ought to have been directed by Peter Jackson. I feel he would have made it more amusing. He'd have focused on others aboard the ship besides just Rose and Jack. He'd have also put something that was uniquely him into the movie.

More people hitting the funnels and screws on the way down when the ship was vertical woulda been awesome. Also, geriatric slapboxing should have broken out over the dry seats in the lifeboats.

Philistines.

What's the criteria for "overrated"? How do you determine where a movie is rated? Who's doing the rating?

I think part of the reason some of these movies are considered overrated now is that so many subsequent movies copied or borrowed from them. I'm not particularly in love with Gone with the Wind or Wizard of Oz, but the film landscape would be drastically different if they were never made. 2001, while confusing, is probably the most influential science fiction film of the last half-century, and represents the dividing line between modern science fiction and "the oldies". It's the Watchmen of sci-films, in my opinion.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head. I can't say that's true with every movie on the list. However, I agree that a lot of classic movies that now seem cliched are viewed that way precisely because so many other films ripped them off.

I removed the ones I disagreed with. I mean, come on...2001? That easily one of the best movies ever created. The rest of those? Meh...

Indeed. I got more enjoyment over a 30-minute animated piece than that overblown crapfest. And how novel of Ron Howard to also showcase that Christmas has been commercialized! No one has ever, EVER, done that before.

Feh!

I would presume the Grinch isn't there because its a list of "overrated" movies, not "movies that are generally recognized as sheer crap."

I likes Pulp Fiction, but The Shawshank Redemption was an even better film that year.

I wouldn't know. I went ahead and, y'know, read the novella it's based on.

Oh WOW! You mean...you read....a BOOK?!! That's so cool of you! I mean, damn, that just makes you a faux-intellectual! I wish I wasn't one of the sheep that watched movies, and instead, read short stories so I, too, could be like "I read the book...", and then people would listen to my opinion because being I had read a book meant I had some authority on the subject. MAN! That would make me a hit with the women. Damn. You're so cool, and not at all pretentious, Snarf...
