right click then paste
Thats how it works on a PC, I don't know about macs.

I have tried doing that before!
It copies the media player but leaves a big black space where the video footage is!

Sometimes it captures a picture but for some reason it never captures it the same size!
You will see the media player as normal, but for some reason the top of the head is cut off or something!

I thought so at first too. Check in it's settings to see where the capture is gooing when you press the button. I have changed it so the capture goes right to my desktop.

the "print screen" button typically does not work with anything streaming -- which would include dvd playback and streaming internet shows.
it mostly has to do with how your video card accelerates (plays) the media.
in cases where it does work (local shite) you just hit the button on the keyboard when you want a screen cap. then, open an art program or microsoft word and go to EDIT -- PASTE and it'll plop it on in there.
for dvd screen caps on your PC, you need a DVD player that provides the option within itself. nero does it, as well as powerdvd and a few others -- many of which are free (or can be found for free). its just a wee lil button on the interface of the dvd player that you click whenever you want a capture.
