Blizzard prepping 'next-gen MMO,' Starcraft 2?

Source: Several job listings on the official Blizzard Web site and a forum thread on Starcraft-centric Teamliquid.net.

What we heard: Barely a month goes by without some sort of speculation--and the occasional prank--raising the prospect of Blizzard Entertainment's next project. One of the most common rumors has the cash-flush Vivendi subsidiary working on a console version of World of Warcraft, its wildly popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game. That theory got a boost this week, when Blizzard posted job listings for a lead technical artist, lead tools programmer, and lead engine programmer for a "next-gen MMO."

"Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an individual to lead an engine-programming team focused on next-generation massively multiplayer online games," read one of the job descriptions. "The ideal candidate will possess outstanding communication and coordination skills and be capable of...[helping in the] design and creation of a next-generation engine."

As if the mention of a new Blizzard MMOG wasn't enough, this week also saw rumors spread that the publisher-developer is resurrecting one of its classic real-time strategy series. According to a Korean newsletter partially translated by Teamliquid.net, "StarCraft 2 will be revealed for the first time to the world at Blizzard's World Wide Invitational (WWI)." According to the letter, Blizzard will also use the event, which takes place in Seoul, South Korea, on May 19 and 20, to show off the game, which reportedly has full 3D graphics, a revamped combat system, and a new race.

The official story: In an unusual turn of events, Blizzard freely admits that it will announce a new game at the WWI in Korea, where Starcraft's popularity is at near-fanatical levels. "We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be," a rep told GameSpot.

Unsurprisingly, though, Blizzard's publicity minion became tight-lipped about the new game. "We can't give any further details regarding the product announcement at WWI," the rep said. "Everyone will have to wait until the event to find out the news."

The Blizzard rep was even less chatty when it came to the subject of the next-gen MMOG. "Blizzard has a number of unannounced projects in the works, but we're not prepared to make any announcements about them at this time," was all he would say.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that a new Blizzard game will be announced in just over three weeks. (Mark your calendars!) Bogus that it's been officially confirmed as Starcraft 2. "We have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present," said the Blizzard rep.

As for the next-gen MMOG, the job listings prove that it is not bogus. However, the fact that none of the listings mention any platform means that the game could be a "next-gen" PC MMORPG, not a next-gen console title. This seems the more likely scenario, given that Blizzard reassigned much of its console team to focus on PC projects last August.

I think it they will announce Starcraft 2, which will come out this year or next year.

For the MMO, I think that will be World Of Starcraft. I read a while ago that Blizzard plans to keep World Of Warcraft going for at least five years. At the end of that is when World Of Starcraft will come out.

I hope it's Diablo 3 but the general wisdom is that it's going to be Star Craft. Is that the one that has gone the longest without a sequal?

Starcraft 2 confirmed?

Source: An eagle-eyed GameSpot News reader. (Keep the tips coming, kids!)

The official story: So it's no secret that this weekend, Blizzard Entertainment will reveal a new game. Last month, the developer-publisher took a break from counting its massive World of Warcraft revenue to reveal it would be making a major announcement at the forthcoming Blizzard World Wide Invitational (WWI) event in Seoul, South Korea.

Given the massive popularity of Starcraft in Korea, the announcement's venue led many to believe that the unnamed game would be a sequel to the real-time strategy title. Others felt that, given the fact Blizzard is hiring developers for a next-generation massively multiplayer online project, the new game might actually be an MMOG based on Starcraft, along the lines of a major game site's 2006 prank announcement of World of Starcraft. (Ahem.)

On Monday, the Irvine, California-based developer-publisher began a teaser countdown on its Web site, Blizzard.com, showcasing its biggest games from the past 13 years. A timeline on the bottom of the site begins with the company's 1994 debut Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, and ends with a gigantic question mark, which sources close to the Blizzard told GameSpot would be a "massive surprise."

However, said surprise's impact looks set to be diminished somewhat. That's because a countdown identical to the one running on Blizzard.com is also running on Starcraft2.com. The page also bears the imprimatur of Blizzard Entertainment, and is registered to the company, according to a Network Solutions WHOIS search.

What we heard: Blizzard had not returned requests for comment as of press time, which is not entirely surprising, given that much of its PR department is currently badgering flight attendants for cocktails in transit to Korea. However, a search of other potential game titlesdoesn't turn up any more sites officially registered to Blizzard. Diablo3.com and Worldofstarcraft.com are fan pages, and Starcraftmmo.com and Warcraft4.com are both owned by cybersquatters.

Bogus or not bogus?: Blizzard has been characteristically tight-lipped about its forthcoming announcement, expected Saturday. However, it is looking more and more likely that it will be Starcraft-related.

The announcement will happen late tonight.

My prediction is that it will be a Starcraft game but not necessarily another plain RTS game like the original Starcraft. Because of all the money Blizzard is making off of WOW I think this game will have some sort of persistent online world but will not be a roleplaying game like WOW.

As I thought so, it looks nice so far, but not really from this century, compared with games like Supreme Commander.

Im dissapointed about the graphics tbh.

looks just like when generals came, it would be ok 3-4 years ago

Nothing I've read about this game has gotten me excited yet. It looks like they are trying to please the Koreans by keeping it as close to the original as they can without calling it a remake. They haven't said anything about multiplayer yet. I'm hoping thats where the good stuff is.

movie looks cool

c&c 3 and starcraft 2 were probably the only games that could have gotten me interested in PC gaming again. in 1999. now... i dunno. i just feel too outta the loop. and as powerful as consoles have become, it just doesnt feel like any of them have the right controls for it, not even the mouse-like wii.

the ds, however... id love to see some RTS games on that. doesnt have the graphic power for the new games, but c&c 2 and back or red alert or starcraft 1, that'd be perfect.

1up says its release date is 11/20/2007. Its either a mistake or they have info no one else has.

They have a starcraft cover story and the picture is on their site. The bottom says "what happened to Diablo 3?". They blurred that part out today. Its no secret that Diablo 3 is being made so I wonder why they blurred it out now.

Starcraft 2 Trilogy Announced

 Quote:
Terran, Zerg, and Protoss each getting their own game to complete Starcraft's "epic" story.
By Tina Sanchez, 10/10/2008

During the StarCraft 2 gameplay panel at BlizzCon, Blizzard posed a question to the audience: Should they sacrifice an epic story or truly create something spectacular? They're choosing the latter. Today they announced that they will be creating a single-player trilogy for StarCraft 2 where each race will have a stand-alone game. The first will be Terran: Wings of Liberty, where players take on the role of Jim Raynor in a non-linear game. The second is Zerg: Heart of Swarm, and the last will be Protoss: Legend of the Void.

Blizzard is promising that each game will have 26-30 missions, and each campaign will feel like its own epic story. They are also promising that they wont leave StarCraft lovers with cliffhangers. Each game will be a full product with a satisfying ending. We'll be hitting up Blizzard for more info as BlizzCon continues, so stay tuned.

This is either a joke or the blizzard activision merger is starting to show its bad side.

StarCraft II targeting an '09 release

 Quote:
Blizzard president Mike Morhaime confirmed in an investor webcast that StarCraft II has been planned for release later this year. "We're targeting an end of year release this year for StarCraft II," said Morhaime. "But as always, we won't release it until it meets our standards and the expectations of our players."

With the beta opening this summer, it looks like there will be more than enough StarCraft for fans to sink their Zerg-like talons into.

So....this came out today. If I upgrade my graphics card I could play this but I'm fully into Warcraft again and that is sucking up all my free time.

I'll probably wait until all three parts are out and but the deluxe edition.
