Just bought a DVD that is in Full Screen format, but I prefer Wide Screen. My player has a button that can alternate between "zoom fit", and then wide or full.

So does it really matter what format the actual DVD is in? I'm too lazy to go back and get the Wide Screen version, but I will if there is a difference that my player can't change.

Yeah...

16:9 is widescreen format and 4:3 is non wide screen.

16:9 will generally show as a letterbox format on a standard 4:3 tv screen, meaning you see the full width that you would on a widescreen tv, but the depth is smaller.

Widescreen DVDs show things more like they were on the original theatrical release, and you will see more to the left and right of the picture that might be cut off on a 4:3 ratio DVD.

So which do you prefer?

With Wide Screen, you lose the top of the picture, and gain more of the sides, and with Full Screen, the opposite.

I prefer wide screen myself. You don't lose the top or bottom from it like you think you do,because full screen format more or less...stretches(for lack of a better word)the picture to fit the TV screen, whereas, like Nowhereman said, widescreen shows the picture as it was in a theatre. Granted you're only losing a little off the sides, but it's nice to get the whole thing.

One of the worst parts of full-screen is seen on the old VHS versions of Ghostbusters -- the director used the full screen for the film, so when it was edited for VHS (full-screen) at first much of the action was missing. THEN, with the digital revolution, they re-did the full-screen with digital/fake pans to the most important action, giving the film an artificially disjointed feel that rips the viewer out of the story. It really is awful.

Wide-screen. Always. And, if you buy an HDTV the ratio fits a lot better -- plus it is so motherfucking big, the letterbox matters zilch. But plasma HDTV is shit: they wear out/fade really quick (a couple years, not long for something costing thousands of bucks) and make an annoying humm at high altitudes (relevant for my city). My sister and her husband got the new technology shit, not pixels and not plasma. It really is damn keen.

Full screen is for pre-widescreen TV shows and my crazy sister who thinks she's getting ripped off if the picture doesn't fill up the entire screen.

Some widsescreen DVDs are slightly different as well.
When you watch them on a widescreen tv, you still get a letterbox format, though the black bars are not as big.
My belief is that these are the closest to seeing everything like at a cinema!

WB had the right idea a few years back, but seemed to have stopped it these days as they used to produce some films as double sided discs.
One side had 16:9 on it, and the other had 4:3.

I think most DVDs these days are all widescreen (apart from tv series), but some older releases you are just gonna have to accept full screen format until they re-release them, as they never released them as widescreen.

The cool thing with newer Plasma and LCD tvs is that they can reformat how movies look on your tv, allowing older full screen films to still be full screen without stretching or losing any picture.

Oh you've got to be fucking kidding me.

We're still debating that nonsense???!!!

If some retard yokel thinks his picture is being cut off because it doesn't fill his TV screen then fuck him. Why do we as a society have to cater to peoples ignorance and stupidity?

No. Which is why no one's posted in this thread in over six months.

I was feeling too lazy to take back the wrong DVD, so I was looking to justify keeping it.

Nowhereman told me what time it was, though...
