Pick it and choose it...it can be anything as long as it is an hour or longer..possibly even 50 minutes, but traditional feature length only (preferably to having been shown at theaters at some point as well). Anime, Disney, Bakshi, Warner Bros...whatever. Pick no more than 5, and then the best can be tallied up and listed in a poll. I'm thinking top 15 or 20 go into the poll...maybe even top 10 if there is a consensus. Totals will be counted up in 7 days so hop to it.

Yeah, I think claymation or stop motion should count, but not Henson level puppetry like Dark Crystal or Labyrinth.

your right, i was thinkin, not a cartoon. by definition i suppose stop action/claymation is animated. and i am still undecided on the rest of mine. transformers is the only one i have watched recently. been 15 years since i seen the secret of nimh.

In no order...

The Incredibles
Secret of Nimh
Lilo & Stitch
Nausicaa, Valley of the Wind
Tenchi Muyo: Tenchi In Love

I would have added Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, but it was slightly edged out...

Damnit, Cj made me think of a miyazaki movie I left out...

in my mind, it's the best of the Japanese features. I'm a bit surprised no one's at least mentioned Akira yet, since it started the current wave of popularity of anime.

Bambi

I've always been in love with the music and story of this film. It wasn't until I got the nice, cleaned up and restored version that I really appriciated the how pretty the film is as well. If you have the DVD, check out clips where they interview the animators...great stuff.

Also, props for Disney for not including the scene in the book where Bambi's dad tells him to bugger off while he enjoys a Springtime romp with Bambi's mother. That was odd.

Fantasia

Leopold conducting. Unicorns. Flying horses. Dinosaurs with Stravinksy. Huge honkin' deamon. Need I say more? I love Fantasia 2000 just as much, just for including 'The Firebird Suite'.

Princess Mononokee

After years of getting annoyed by animie, this film actually made me a fan. I've gone on to watch most of Studio G's stuff, and I've enjoyed it all.

Sleeping Beauty

Yes, I picked three Disney movies. And for different reasons. What's always impressed me with Sleeping Beauty is the artwork. Because this was the jump to a larger screen size, backgrounds needed to be more detailed. Furthermore, there's a whole 'tapestry' look to the whole film that's unlike any other Disney film.

Plus, one brutal bitch of a dragon.

...I'm holding off on my fifth choice at the moment. Watership Down comes to mind, because it was a British acid-trip of a movie, but NIMH comes close too...I haven't seen either movie in years.

yeah, i saw Akira in the theater and it made me realize how good anime could be...way ahead of it's time, but I really have no love for Akira itself other than it's prettiness.

In no order at all :

Batman Beyond : Return Of The Joker
Toy Story
The Incredibles
Iron Giant
Gulliver's Travels ( this is an old one from the 1940's. Animation for back then and art was excellent.)

Macross plus doesn't count. I would also think that Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker shouldn't count either as it was made Direct to video. Pretty soon you'll have a bunch of OAV anime movies that were never shown in Japanese theaters. That could muss things up...

Love Maleficent! What an incredible bitch - definitely one of Disney's best villians...

...though Ursala gives her a serious run for her money...

Interesting little tid bit which you prolly know, Ceej, but hey: the different style of art was used, in part, because Disney was actually trying to emulate the tapestries of the Renaissance period. He wanted the look for the movie because that was the time period that Beauty was to be set in. Unfortunately, the audience was turned off by it. Sleeping Beauty was unsuccessful when it was originally released and Walt Disney believed that the art was a big part of the reason.

South Park

Brilliant.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

one of the most underrated animated films...

Anastasia

This movie died in the theatres, yet it was so damn good!

The Jungle Book

Baloo makes this movie.

The Incredibles

The movie the Fantastic Four should have been.

Peter Pan

Childhood favorite. How can you not love Tink?

Yeah, I know, there are 6 here...I'll figure out which one gets cut later...

The truth is, there were so many to choose from, but these two also are faves, even if they didn't make the list. Could change my mind though...

Cinderella

Beauty & the Beast

Dear, sweet Harley Kwink...I'm madly in love with you. Marry me! We can go to Canadia. Or Boston or something. It'll be grand...You know the cookies are a given. They are ALWAYS a given. You could dump me tomorrow and you'd still get the cookies. Boston..shit, wherever dyke weddings were legalized. And where better to rub their little piggie noses in how bad they suck than right on their doorstep? What are they gonna do? Be jealous of you? Stare furiously at your tah-tahs? Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

Not even. Ursala doesn't even make top five for pure evil awesomeness. Maleficent is what nightmares are made of!

My five, in no particular order:

Ninja Scroll - Akira and Vampire Hunter D got me into anime, but Ninja Scroll is the flick I watch over and over again. Beautiful animation, great action/fight scenes, and a solid horror quotient make it a favorite.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut - So much wrongness, so much social and Hollywood commentary, so much hilarity. The greatest musical made in the past 20 years. Fuck Baz Luhrman (sp?). Fuck Chicago. This flick is the best!

Lion King - The last truly great non-Pixar animated film from Disney. A perfect combination of comedy, drama, horror, and voice acting. For those of you who whine that it rips off Kimba (hoo hoo!), let me remind you that Kimba's creator was flattered by it and openly admitted in interviews that he himself lifted much of Kimba from Disney.

Disney's Robin Hood - Just a hilarious flick. A joy to watch from start to finish. I don't know what I like best about this: the jokes that hit their mark every time, the brilliance in animal choices for the characters, the infectious music that dares you to NOT sing along, or the scenes of everyone trying to grab Lady Cluck and the party after the archery tournament. This may be my favorite Disney flick.

Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm - Until the Christopher Nolan movie came out, this was probably the best Batman film ever done. It still may be.

These five take nothing away from The Incredibles, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Akira, Heavy Metal, Rock & Rule, Shrek, Cinderella, or Iron Giant. They're all great. These are just my five favorites, though I reserve the right to switch out a few depending on my mood.

ditto. I remember hearing so much about it and then finally getting to see it at a con when I lived in Mobile. I was pretty underwhelmed aside from the visuals.

plus, it's actually pretty well written, which is were most anime falls down.

i guess my 5 would have to be

nightmare before christmas, iron giant, batman, lion king, beauty and the beast.

i just went with what i like, and how many times i could watch it and still enjoy it.

Shenanigans! Ursala sings, is charming, funny and Eeeeeevil! G-d I fuckin' love her! How do you NOT sing along to "Poor Unfortunate Souls"?!?!?! It's brilliant! Hell, I'm singin' it right now!

Maleficent is still my fave Disney villian, though. But perhaps the most evil would be the Wicked Queen in Snow White:

"Bring me back her heart" (!!!!!)

Bitch asked for her stepdaughter's heart!! In a box! WTF!!

Awesome.

Never heard of Ninja Scroll, though admitedly I'm not an anime fan - unfortunately, the look just turns me off. Akira's on my netflix list, though as its gotten such good reviews. I'm curious about Ninja Scroll now and will check it out too.

Fine I'm adding to my honor role list: Finding Nemo, Iron Giant, Lion King (Hamlet with a happy ending!), Snow White, Dumbo, Shrek(the 1st one) and as mentioned already Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast...

That's part of my point. A villain - a truly GREAT villain - shouldn't have you singing their song. A good Disney villain should have that five-year-old in you cringing and cowering in fear. That's why, as much as I love Prince John from Robin Hood and Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective (Vincent Price RAWKS!!!), I wouldn't put either in my top five.

I'd place Snow White's Wicked Queen as a close (oh-so-close) second to Maleficent for a few simple reasons:

1) Both actively tried to kill the heroine. But Maleficent had the stones to curse her to death in front of the girl's parents AND a roomful of party-goers. And why? Because she wasn't invited. That's evil!

2) It's implied, but not openly stated, that Maleficent has more than a business relationship with the Infernal things that give her her power. Makin' whoopee with demons and such? Evil!!

3) Wicked Queen turns into an old lady. Maleficent turns into a dragon. A fucking dragon! EVIL!!!

4) Maleficent actually uses a curse word. In a Disney movie. EVIL!!!!

That said, it's still close between the two. And I wouldn't belittle anyone who reverses the order.

Definitely check it out. It's a gorgeous, well-made film. There's some scary shit to be seen within!

Yeah, but she wasn't related to Aurora. The Queen was Snow White's stepmother - it is not blood, but that is still family...

Ok, I admit that I love the dragon, which is what eventually pushed her to being my favorite villian evar!!!

Absolutely. Both scared the crap outta me as a little girl. But, yeah, they're neck and neck. Jafar, Gaston, Scar and the rest pale in comparison.

Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

And, yes, Vincent Price is fuckin' awsome...

I'm curious - who would be in your top 5?

1) Maleficent - Sleeping Beauty (For every reason mentioned)

2) Wicked Queen - Snow White (She's a close #2, for every reason mentioned)

3) Scar - Lion King (He commits regicide and fratricide in one swoop, attempts to have his son killed, beds down his brother's wife, destroys his "people" and his land...and he has a British accent. The dude's fucking evil!)

4) Cruella DeVille - 101 Dalmations (Forget Glenn Close, the animated version is evil and psychotic and damned scary to kids. To paraphrase Stephen King: people forget how loudness in adults terrify kids, and it's easy for a child to connect "puppies" with "children".)

5) Chernibog - Fantasia (Night On Bald Mountain segment) (Forgive my spelling...for all intents and purposes, he's the devil. He may not do anything blatantly evil, but he's a damned scary character. Imagine him looking over the world from his mountain and deciding to fly over the world and create havoc...)

Which, again, is to take nothing away from Sher Khan, the wicked stepmother from Cinderella, Captain Hook (I have strong opinions about that flick as it relates to Song Of The South), Prince John, and the rest. These are just my top five.

The Queen's motivation is vanity (and fear, again implied, that Snow White will surpass her as Queen). Maleficent's motivations are pure evil - she does it because she can. The party snub is incidental - Maleficent would've cursed her whether she'd been invited or not.

I haven't seen Snow White in years, but I thought the Wicked Queen had some connection to the Dark Side as well? I've got to watch that again...

The Wicked Queen uses "black" magic. She's evil, but not Evil's concubine. It's never stated in Sleeping Beauty, but it's easy to infer from certain scenes.

Yes, "hell". It's a nothing word for us today, but think about its impact on parents and children when the movie came out. That must've bordered on scandalous at the time. Just as many people were up in arms over "shit" and "damn" being said in Transformers: The Movie.

Chronicles of Narnia: The Witch, The Lion and The Wardrobe. Won an Emmy, back in the day.

Gulliver's Travels. (Have seen two American movies, one cartoon and one that combined animation and live action.)
