Set me back a few quid but I wanted to read it in its entirety and I like hardcovers.

This book really needs to be fully appreciated with drugs. Its very very clearly marketed at stoner college students.

Commander Adam Archer leaves me cold. He's just a dullard with cosmic powers. The most interesting characters are the villains. Nickleback is brilliant. He's constantly quaffing martinis (a la a James bond villain) and is just out to amuse himself. The floating dessicated head in the tank guy (name escapes me) is a junkie with a ray gun and I love the fact something terrible happens to his body and he doesn;t care so long as he gets his next hit.

Is it just me or is Igoba's destruction of a planet with a big club, as it appears on the front cover, the most phallic thing ever in comics?

Basil Cronus is the floating head junkie. more recently Nickelhead stuck Cronus' head atop Discordia's body just to fuck with him.

And with Discordia's father. That was in the Celestial edition. I could see it coming but it was still bloody funny. And Basil didn't care - he just wanted his next buzz.

Nickeheads's disco/breakdance splits was truly one of the most unanticipated things I have ever read in a comic book.

Maxim the cosmic dog kind of sucks too. This would be more entertaining if it was an all-vilain book.

you should check out Nixon's Pals, a recent OGN written by Casey. it's about a parole officer who deals entirely in supervillains. Casey does villains really well. he also did a one shot called Black Plague dealing in villains, but I haven't read that yet. I think I have it on a re-order.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check that out.

I had thought Joe Casey was mostly known for staid Superman stuff, so I'll pleasantly surprised that he can write good work.

I actually liked The Intimates at Wildstorm... it was a cool take on the "superhero highschool" idea.

I didn't read that one, but I enjoyed his Wildcats 3.0 a lot. corporate supheroing on several non cliche levels. I tried to base Doc Paragon in part on what Casey was doing with Spartan.

The Intimates involved some concepts from Wildcats 3.0 (especially towards the ending), but having not read that series I didn't get a lot of that.

The Intimates are collected in a deluxe hardcover. Is it worth the buy?

I don't know, I liked it a lot, but then again I did steal the issues instead of paying for them. I'd suggest checking out an issue or two before making the buy (if you have CDisplay installed I can e-mail you one).
