Pittsburgh has the money to pay these guys they simply choose not to. You should be directing your venom at those owners. Do you know with revenue sharing every team in baseball can afford to have at the very least a 70 million dollar payroll. Yet teams like Pittsburgh and the Marlins keep their payrolls between 15 and 30 million.


How is that the Yankees fault? Get over yourself and this displaced venom you have towards a team that isn't even a threat for a world series this year.

I'm going to side with PJP here, and not just because Paul is a whiny bitch. While the Marlins seem to have solid scouting to allow their cheapskate owners the ability to skimp on payroll and still field a competitive team, the Pirates have been a fucking disgrace for over a decade. They draft poorly, they sign horrible free agents and overpay for the privilege. From what I've read, they have a great stadium and a good fan base, so they have the money to spend. They just don't. So good job to the Yankees for making the deal and fuck Pittsburgh ownership until they decide that they want to field a competitive team and stop being the laughingstock of baseball.

Also, keep in mind that the Rays have a ridiculously low payroll, and look at what good scouting and smart trades have finally gotten them.

Is that what you're referring to? And you're comparing the Beckett trade to the Indians realizing they're out of it this year and won't be keeping Sabathia, so they traded him to a contender for a package of solid propects? And likening that to the Rays, who have a disgusting amount of talent to the point where they could conceivably compete for years to come? And this refutes what I said...how?

I would've done that trade in a heartbeat. Then and now. And, yes, the cheap-ass Marlins definitely traded away a pitcher that they knew they "couldn't afford" in his arbitration years, but Lowell was considered a "throw-in" - basically, the miserly Marlins weren't going to trade Beckett without the team taking Lowell's $9 Million contract as well. The previous year, Lowell had underperformed to the point where he was considered a throw-in. Cute how that worked out for the Marlins. Just like how they traded away Cabrera and Willis, knowing that they "couldn't afford" (didn't want to pay) those players in their arbitration years. It's not shilling if them's the facts, boyo.

Xavier Nady is fools gold(the 50 point jump in batting average being the primary indicator), and Damaso Marte is a solid 33 year old middle reliever, meaning his hype to actual value ratio is pretty crappy.

Unproven minor leaguers are also potential stars, and Jose Tabata becomes one of the best prospects for Pittsburgh in a system that desperately needs them.

This is no swindle, my friend. If anything, it further exemplifies that despite the team's recent draft success, the Yankees' utilization of talent at the highest level(the majors) is still somewhat behind the curve. Contrast this with the approach of the Flying Epsteins and you see why the shift in balance of power has occurred these last couple of years.

Odds are the trade won't mean much to either team. Nady is a good bet to pumpkinize, and Tabata still has a long way to go developmentally(especially in regard to hitting for power) before he's a finished product.
