I'm quitting wow due to not being in a guild and really kinda bored with playing with other people. Now I need a good single player RPG to keep me entertained.

I think my computer can handle Oblivion but I'm not sure. I've tried Neverwinter nights but it was too complicated for me.

I have the fallout games but its hard to get into them because they are so old and I didn't play them back then.

I want to get KOTOR for the PC but I can't find it anywhere by its self and I don't want to spend $40 for the game pack it comes in.

Any ideas?

The "Gothic" series keeps getting better and better. "Divine Divinity" is basically a "Diablo" knockoff (with a horrible title, but that's beside the point) that actually outperforms "Diablo" in some areas. Hm. We've been playing a lot of "Space Siege," which is from the makers of the "Dungeon Siege" series, and is definitely worth a look.

if you do decide to get back online rex CoH has done a lot to make the game more accessible, and soon the integration between CoH and CoV will be complete.

There's the good ol' Baldurs Gate games, Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2. There's the Icewind Dale games.

Newer games include Might & Magic: Dark Messiah (really cool) Obviously there's oblivion, but I'd have to say that it pales in comparison to the previous Elder Scrolls games.

An older game I enjoyed was Return to Krondor. The camera is a bit....weird, but the game itself is quite good.

There's Titan Quest, a diablo ripoff, but still quite entertaining.

Another older game is Arcanum, quite good also.

Good luck with Morrowind. If you can't find it, get it here, along with Bloodmoon and Tribunal, if you're so inclined.

I would recommend the original Deus Ex and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. They're fairly dated and your computer should be able to run them.

Someone already mentioned Fallout, which I was going to recommend.

If you don't mind the dated graphics I would also mention System Shock. Bioshock which everyone rants about is somewhat of a successor to that game.

I understand, but I completely disagree. Lemme go on a tangent here.

---------------------------

We consumers been have too used to these divisions of art we know as genres that we forget the roots for the terms. We need to take trip again to memory lane. Role Playing Games we know today originated from Table Top RPGs such as D&D, that were highly inspired by moderated theater games and acting improv exercises. (Funilly enough the most table top RPGs I ever played was back in freshman year of high school in drama class). In those games you were allowed to choose a role, and make decisions that will shape the story and the world they inhabit. When those RPGs made the transition from pen and paper to controller and monitor, programmers did their best to tell a compelling story and give a rewarding experience without a Game Master or Moderator. As time went by many of these game designers felt constricted by the limitations of the current storytelling technology, so they reduced or completely abandoned the feature of free will. Yet, because they kept classic pen and paper concepts such as experience points, attributes, and leveling they got away with retaining the classification of a role playing game when there was little of it involved.

It seriously confounds me why Diablo is considered a role playing game! The only real things you choose are your occupation and wardrobe. In that game you have to complete every single quest and none of your actions have any bearing in the end, because everything is already decided to keep a coherent and canonical storyarc. Somehow this game is considered a hardcore role playing game without any roleplaying! Sure you do step into the shoes of another character and you can definitely decide things such as the order you complete quests and who you kill, but what video game doesn't allow you that? I think we can all agree unanimously that Doom is not a RPG. So following that logic, we can conclude neither is Diablo.

Yet Deus Ex and Bioshock are still considered by some to be first person shooters but not role playing games. I am not going to take a bold move and make a very controversial statement.

Deus Ex and Bioshock are some of the truest role playing games out there.

---------------------------

"A man chooses, a slave obeys!" - Andrew Ryan from Bioshock

deus ex machina- Latin for God from the machine. In classical Greek drama, a deity that was presented onto the stage through a machine to provide a solution to a problem and resolve the drama.

---------------------------
In another time and place genres were easier to place in gaming because games were simpler. In shooting games you shot things and in platformers you jumped platforms. Every genre of gaming were given narrow definitions and they kept to themselves like races and cultures. That was another time and place.

In Deus Ex and Bioshock, the camera angle is surely in the first person and you may definitely shoot at things. However first person is a mainly a camera angle and shooting is an action. Within those games nearly every choice you make affects the outcome of another scenario. Walking into the ladies room could warrant a reprimand from your boss. Killing too many hostiles may cause your quartermaster to react cautiously and withhold lethal weapons from you. Acting as a good samaritan could pull you into mediating a long family conflict. Breaking regulations and giving a targeted man a gun to defend himself could affect his standing in the community and relationship with others. Questioning a man more could reveal ulterior motives that may save a friend's life. Getting to a location on time could affect your reputation with a hidden city. Associating with a certain person may cause you to be ostracized or untrusted by a group. Attacking a brute could traumatize a little girl. Leaving a young girl in a dangerous situation or giving into greed, evil and desperation to use her for power could seriously affect your character and their world.

I actually completed Deus Ex once without ever shooting anything (Except the fictional drug Zyme.) For those who wonder how since you still need to kill certain individuals in the game, I laid traps and engaged in hand to hand and explosive combat. So that challenges the shooter definition. When Fallout 3 comes out will there be people who will actually call it a shooter? These games give you choices. Choices that would change the status quo. Thus giving you a real role and are rightfully true role playing games.

(Not to mention there are aspects like character sheets, experience points, leveling up skills, and upgrading items included.)

Games made today aren't as simple as the days of Wolfenstein 3D, Pool of Radiance, Donkey Kong, Myst and so forth. Much like cultures, many span multiple genres and some challenge them.

Phew!

PS: Since FPS is a genre by itself all because of camera angle and action, Diablo should be reclassified as an Overhead Whacker because it isn't a RPG.

I tend to refer to the hack-n-slashes as 3PA's, for third-person-action (giggedy?), though honestly granting them the additional rpg moniker would primarily depend on how important character progression is to gameplay.

While I do agree with Anonymous One's... rant... it typically is more accurate to refer to such games as "First-Person Shooters with RPG elements."
A good example of a less-RPG-esque one is "No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.s Way," or it's pseudo-sequel, "Contract J.A.C.K."
Both games have very rudimentary character development, but that's about it.
