this was literally an idea I just had this morning. I got back to my apartment, sat down at my computer, and started typing. six hours later this monolith of a post materializes. I dunno what's gonna happen with it exactly - I'm knee-deep in thesis work right now - but it's supposed to be another Elseworlds-style retelling of the vanguard universe using some classic vanguard characters but moved into the future and into a post-apocalyptic dystopia. I am hoping to make another post or two in the immediate future to adequately 'set the table' so that if enough interest develops, I can open it up to whoever wants to contribute. your feedback is more than welcome.

thank you. I am trying to get the basics of this setting written up as quickly as possible - I hope it doesn't make the first few posts seem rushed or forced - because I think the rest of it would be a lot better if better writers than me were able to elaborate on the basic outlines I'm trying to create. like I said I know we're all busy, but maybe if I'm lucky I might start something worth others' contributions.

I'm on break, there's not much of anything stopping me from posting. I have about half of it typed up in word, just gotta come up with a satisfactory way to wrap up the prologue.

prologue complete. I may do more tomorrow, time permitting, but if doc or grimm or pro or someone wants to chip in, they're welcome to. I'll try and have a little primer of sorts posted in here. you're welcome to tell me what you think so far.

just a few thoughts after percolating a bit on your last posts.

I feel that by introducing the newbie to all the Vanguard members so early in the story, you've lost a lot of potential for dramatic impact.

biggest example: you've played the zombie card now in this reality (insert kill the joke/flog the dead horse bit here), with some team members going out on target practice and such. you've played up the dangers of these things, etc.

yet, you've already introduced a team member who is capable of coming and going freely amongst the zombies, and even ending their threat altogether. that being: Grimm.

you would have had much more of a dramatic intro for that character if he happened to be the big zombie that no one else was aiming at, and that newbie decides to take a pot shot on. that's a much more dramatic and effective way of bringing that character into the story, as it's not only a memorable introduction, but a good way to introduce the reader to the character's abilities.

your use of Brianna however, to herd the zombies was very effective.

just two cents worth.

thanks grimm. I appreciate your advice, and yeah I probably tipped my hand a bit early with the zombies. in the grand scheme of the alternate future I'm trying to create, they're actually a comparatively minor threat, but you're absolutely correct that Grimm would've been a really interesting 'wild card' in that scene (I originally wanted to use him instead of Brianna but wasn't sure how to make the rest of the scene work; next time I'll ask for your advice first). I think I should have, in retrospect, saved some of the vanguardians for later appearances, which in theory is still possible since I haven't accounted for many of the ones who aren't currently with this particular group, but my original hope was that once I laid out enough of the basic background information in this new storyline, others like you or doc or pro or chewy might want to add things to it and introduce other characters - maybe even cut away to entirely different parts of the world where members of vanguard or other figures in the vanguard universe are involved in the struggle in their own way. I do appreciate your advice, as I said, and I'll try to pace things a little better in the future.

well, I know I've said this before, but the bulk of my writing efforts right now are focused on my comics work. so unless I get a notion that just won't go away (like Crisis Point), that's where my efforts are going to be.

I'm happy with CP, and I'd be content to let that be my last word on those characters. at least in this incarnation.

that's understandable. I loved crisis point, and I'm sure the comics work is dynamite. just wanted to confirm that the door's open if you ever do feel inclined to contribute anything to uprising.

If your point was to draw people into writing with you, you should have held off on introducing so many characters up front. People may have been more inclined to participate if they were allowed to dream up the future versions of their old characters.

I will say that I liked how you expanded and used Phil's powers in the last post. Very creative.

just an fyi, I gave you an opening in Old Haunts to write that Phil/Turner fight if you still want to do that. I left their motivations open for you. just don't mess with the main storyline. I'm going to try and finish that stuff up.
