I thought I was all set with the domain but they're also telling me to buy Web Hosting. Do I need webhosting? I just wanna install a wordpress thing in the thing and put some comics in it. Do I need webhosting for that? Is this a requirment if I want to put ads and become rich? Mind you I'm not expecting a lot of visitors, but if I can get 50 cents a month with Google Ads that would be awesome and it would make me King of Chile.

You need web hosting if you want to host your own files.

If you just want the name and would prefer wordpress, the place you bought the domain from probably also offers URL redirection. Just have the domain redirect to your wordpress url.

I think I need the hosting then, because they don't let you put ads in normal wordpress blogs.

I use Innohosting. Great support and they have Fantastico, which is a automatic WordPress installer. Just a couple of clicks and it is installed. Their starter plan is $4.99 a month and they don't have a setup fee or a several month prepay. I've been with them 2 years.

Also if you want to make money, don't rely solely on Google ads. Sign up with some affiliate programs from merchants related to your subject matter. Amazon has a great affiliate program.

Verisign will be raising the rates for domain names by the end of the year. It might be worth it to get the longest plan you can get to avoid paying more.

Always use coupons to renew your domain. Fat Wallet usually has a good list of current GoDaddy codes.

It looks like Soccer99 is working for 99 cent registrations. I'm not sure if it works for renewals.

Shit, I already registered with Godaddy. It's like 4 bucks a month for the hosting too, though they haven't charged that yet so I'm starting to think maybe I didn't tick that option. I thought they'd charge me for the hosting of whole year right now, since I registered the domain for a year.

Ok, so I did forget to buy the hosting when I bought the domain, but that's a good thing because Godaddy offers the basic level (4 bucks/month) for free. At least for now.

I've found a few downsides to Godaddy hosting. Hosting support is notoriously slow. Their servers are also very slow compared to Innohosting, Hostgator and some of the better known shared hosts. Also the free version puts an ugly frame ad banner of theirs on your site.

If I was you I would Google "Godaddy Hosting Reviews" before you start building your site. I have heard that it is difficult to migrate your site from Godaddy if you decide to move later.

Godaddy is great for domain registrations but poor for hosting in my personal experience.

We also had horror stories with godaddy when I was still working for an online mag. It seems they want you to enable auto renew on your subscription. If you don't, all of your files will be deleted ASAP when the hosting expires.

Of course, they have backups and you can ask for the files to be restored after renewing your subscription...but you have to go through tech support and as basams pointed out, their tech support is a bit gay. The chick on the commercials has a nice rack, though.

Also, the advice about not relying on adsense solely is good, especially if you want to turn this into a dayjob of sorts. Google right now is starting to get iffy with their policies. So you better have backups. Amazon is good, and that thing I used for sahog - I got 1 dollar and a few cents off that shit before I abandoned it, even though JLA is the only one visiting the site.

Also, read the effin fineprint on the hosting. I remember when we had hosting from a provider called rockethosting, they suspended our account - domain name and hosting, which was kind of embarassing because it looked like we weren't paying our bills - without any notice whatsoever. We only found out after contacting support, that they suspended our account because we had an mp3 file saved on the server (not a copyrighted mp3, mind you. Just a voice recording).

I'm anxiously waiting for the next update!

Yeah I've started customizing the Wordpress thing and it's really fucking slow. So I can use Innohosting even though I registered the domain with Godaddy? I didn't know that. I'll try that then, thanks.

Once you set up with Innohosting(or whomever you choose), they will give you a list of nameservers to direct your .com to. You then go to your Godaddy domain manager and enter those name servers. Within a few moments(though in extreme cases it can take 24 hrs) your domain will point to your hosting account.

Ok, so I've got two hosting accounts: the free one at Godaddy and the one I paid for at Innohosting. Is it possible to use both hosts (or servers or whatever they're called) on the same domain? Like on different subdomains?

The reason I'm asking is Innohosting only lets me use one MySQL database (unless I upgrade) and I wanna install two separate Wordpress blogs.

You need it to open the first door. The second door needs a blue keycard. The last one uses a gold keycard and there's a switch inside that you have to press to get to the next level.
