I'm tired of firefox being slow and crashing. Despite the constant updates its getting worse.

I've never spent a lot of time with chrome. What kind of add ons should I get? Should I know of anything before using it?

Chrome sucks. It's faster, but it's resource heavy - most browsers use only one cpu thread and just increases memory footprint as you load more tabs. Chrome, on the other hand, uses one thread per tab (e.g. load 5 tabs in opera and open task manager, you'll have one instance of opera using the cpu. Load 5 tabs in chrome and you'll have 5 instances of chrome in task manager, as well as Googleupdate.exe.).

CPU threads are more important than available memory: if you start running out of memory (and I doubt you'll do if you're just browsing and you have 4 gb), your pc can just swap to disk resulting in a momentary slowdown/stutter for the programs in your foreground. But when you run out of CPU threads, your entire PC (including mouse and buttons and shit) stalls and stops being responsive until the program in question is closed successfully or finishes doing what it's supposed to do.

Get Opera instead. It's lighter on resources, and doesn't try to install background shit.

I don't know about compatibility though, there are sites/templates that look wrong on opera but look fine on chrome, and vice versa. But problems like these are usually the fault of the sites themselves for not conforming to standards, particularly the ones with flash and java up the wazoo.

To my recollection, Opera's not secure at all.

Its software apparently allowed advert trackers to bypass your privacy settings.

...and here's an in depth article detailing Opera's vulnerabilities. For reax. Read it, motherfucker.

Here's the one for Chrome, and the one for Firefox.

I use ie, Firefox, and opera every day on multiple computers. Opera is fastest and most stable but has compatibility issues with some web sites. Firefox feels more secure and the latest 10.x feels more stable. IE 9 is pure shit and chrome is a resource hog. Strangely I've always had issues with Firefox on my windows 7 laptop, but I'm sure it's due to the processor because my desktop is fine.

i made the switch to chrome last summer, and haven't looked back since.

yes, it is lacking on features compared to firefox - but the problem with firefox is that it became a beast with all the features. i'd rather just have a brazillion tabs open at once and have everything running smoothly, than all the added plugins.

chrome wins.

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

I'm tired of seeing this message every other time I open firefox.
I'm switching today.

Maybe the problem is the latest version of Firefox (if you're using it). I hated the layout and controls on Firefox 4, so I stuck with 3. Haven't gotten that message at all.

I've been using the latest version of Firefox without that error. Your computer just sucks.

Dual core with six gigs of ram. It shouldn't be giving me problems with simple things like web browsing.

It might be. I was using the same firefox profile on my laptop before it died and I never had any problems with it on that computer.

I've been using chrome all afternoon. Its a lot faster for me. I've haven't run into any problems so far.

Chrome has been a better browser for development and debugging purposes for awhile now, but the most recent version of Firefox's Firebug plugin is impressive enough that I've been using it to check against Chrome's results. Opera plays by its own rules, but it's often useful for checking anything I've missed in the mainstream browsers.

I've just installed Opera, mostly because I got tired over how both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox screws up Facebook for me (or it's Facebook which is badly programmed, I dunno). Basically, some stuff works over at MF while others don't, and vice versa for IE.

I had use for Safari on my older (stationary) computer when both IE and MF frakked up, but haven't used it on my current laptop, despite having it installed. Probably got it from when I got an update on another Apple program.

I suppose I can feel free to un-install Safari, right guys?

I'm sticking with chrome. Its much faster, stable and it doesn't automatically play youtube videos on some sites like firefox did and I hated. I've got eight sites pinned and it still uses less memory than firefox did. I can leave chrome open while playing games and not have to worry about it slowing the game down.

Its simply a better browser.

I would use Google Chrome more often if Google weren't so nosy about my (and other users') Internet traffic.

Yeah. As I've said before, Google strikes me as a creepy big-brotherish monopoly and every new development gets just a little worse in that regard.
